1953. Former commander of the reconnaissance platoon Ivan Astafiev gets out of prison on amnesty and returns to his native Gorky. In the city of rampant crime, and soon Ivan himself is unwittingly drawn into a life of crime. Astafiev wants to end it and start with a clean slate, but the police force him to infiltrate the most dangerous gang of Gorky to frame the leader and return calm to the streets of the city.
