What begins as a dream vacation in a place where the sun never sets, gradually turns into a dark nightmare as the mysterious inhabitants invite them to participate in their disturbing festive activities.
Firstly, the story is not focused on murders, although everyone understands everything perfectly.

There are no screamers, no dark corners, no monsters. But only fanatical people, and that's why it's even scarier.
It is surprising that a film of this genre, and almost all of it was shot in daylight, in a pleasant color scheme, everyone wears white.
And despite the harmless visual, the whole film does not leave a feeling of anxiety and tension. In some places it is disgusting (for example, pubic hair in food and menstrual blood in a drink), in some places it is restless (the child is a seer), in some places it is hypnotic.
The ending is cool.
And cool details in the form of all sorts of drawings that reveal the plot of the film.
A girl who needs self-affirmation and adapts to others., has a sick sister, which affects her, and her boyfriend, who only thinks about his comfort and does not care about her, does not support, but also does not end the relationship.

For me, the film didn't become a psychological drama, because in the end, no one evokes empathy. The most terrifying part of the film was in the scene where GG was writing to her friend at the beginning. She was vital and real. The rest of the film is a nasty formulaic farce about a sect. Caricatured and silly. And all the "decoctions" are perceived as plot armor in case you ask "WHY HASN'T ANYONE CALLED THE COPS IN SO MANY YEARS"

I watched the three-hour director's version. And how well suspense works here! In the first hour of the film, nothing terrible happens: the characters just come to a Swedish settlement for a vacation. I'm not saying that Solstice is the deepest, greatest movie. This is far from the case. In truth, it's quite shallow and pretentious. That's why I kind of understand the haters of the film, who look deeper and analyze, and not just blindly worship everything that fashionable A24 releases.
There are conflicts in the film, but they don't develop properly, they end. And the community system itself unfolds lazily and leaves more questions than answers. For example, why did they burn two young men from their community? Okay, old folks, but here... It's a waste. It's not logical. They should have died out long ago with such traditions.
In general, if we get to the bottom of the meaning of the film and what the author wanted to say, then we are unlikely to come to a clear answer.
I love slashers, but I can't help but admit that it's genre trash. Solstice differs from its genre counterparts solely in its visual and color. Instead of a sea of blood and guts, the film preferred suspense and a beautiful picture. But there's nothing special hidden behind the picture, even though I really want it to look different.
