When this movie was shot in 1997, a lot was said that Heinlein was slightly militaristic and this whole genocide of bugs was not too good. Someone even saw a satire on this world order in Verhoeven's film. Still a European, an intellectual, a critic of the capitalist system of using women. Then September 11 happened and the world was no longer equally kind. In October 2023, during Israel's operation against the Gaza Strip, this film looks almost like a documentary. It's clear that you're rooting for people anyway, they're somehow more humane, but you see significantly fewer problems in what's happening.
And, of course, no one saw feminism as a common washing area and joint military service while maintaining heterosexual relationships and some manipulations to get a prize male.…

@jakor_yuri: You're making things too complicated, but I agree with the basic idea.

As we watched, there were many questions about the acting, the perfect, caricatured appearance of the characters, and the fact that the main character had already become a hardened veteran after a couple of fights. But, after the ending, all questions disappeared. The whole movie is one big propaganda of contract service in this universe. Heroes probably don't even exist, these are caricature images that you should be inspired by and go destroy bugs in the name of the Empire. The main thing to remember is that this is your own decision

I read the book, the film adaptation turned out to be decent…

The film is very "motivated"... Some of the characters have a book basis, mostly in the form of matching names, the rest is made up... Perhaps only Rico has more than just a name for a book)
Heinlein's basic idea was distorted, to put it mildly, but in fact it was distorted, turning the earthly state into a fascist one ...
Otherwise, in fact, nothing better was shot based on this novel, so you can watch it, because at least some part of the atmosphere of the book is present + there is its own atmosphere of the film... If they were filming now, there would be no atmosphere of the book at all... so let's be glad that it was shot a long time ago and the Yankees haven't reshot it yet))
Continued (2 parts) They don't have a book base and their own atmosphere, too, so it's much worse than the 1st movie...

I watched it when it came out in the cinema, for me it was an ordinary cosmo action movie with good special effects, branded ultra-violence and especially wooden acting. Years later, I read on the Internet that it turns out to be anti-fascist satire, cult classics and the best fiction of the decade. Now I've reviewed it, and I haven't found any of it, and the special effects haven't aged well. The interactive television inserts are probably responsible for the satire, but compared to the current television in Israel or Ukraine, they are very restrained and peaceful. In short, if you're making an anti-fascist movie, don't make the fascists look so cute.

@trux: As far as we know, Verhoeven read only two chapters of Heinlein's novel, and then branded the book as militaristic and fascist, apparently not delving deeply into the idea of the novel, perhaps like most of those who branded Heinlein a fascist. The veterans who came to power were apparently immediately considered a militocracy, equated with a military junta, and then personified with fascist juntas in Latin America.
It is also known that Verhoeven wanted to create an "anti-fascist satire," but apparently the understanding of the essence of fascism was so lost that only external attributes remained: Aryan appearance, colors, symbols, etc. Therefore, in terms of meaning, it turned out neither this nor that ... the film does not look serious because of the caricature of its appearance, and it does not look like a satire, because the object of satire is lost somewhere behind the visual part.
