Reality: cheap slasher with bangs..
the rating is clearly only because of Jenna Ortega.
For the noughties it is quite itself, but for our time.. controversial! Not the most spectacular murders + stupid behavior of some characters, all according to the classics of the genre
For me, there is at least an amazing work with the picture (which only the introductory frame is worth) and the epoch is transmitted wonderfully. Plus an unexpected motivation for the murder and an interesting (albeit expected) turn of events towards the end.
It's clear that the genre of horror is blurring and now it's not about shrinking into a chair, screaming and closing your eyes, but rather about previously unknown phobias and the author's approach to the realization of their artistic image.
However, some time ago I came across the trailer of the movie "X" (that is, "X"), I was interested in the concept, but somehow then I missed it from the field of attention. A little later I saw a teaser of another picture by West "MaxXxine " (translated, as you understand, the game with the X's is lost). I decided to see what kind of animal it is. Suddenly it turned out that this is not just another project of the director, but the final part of the trilogy. And I'm like: "Schiito?!". In general, I decided not to waste time on trifles and I will write a review for two films at once. On, actually, "X" and its prequel "Pearl ". And "Maxine" has not yet come out, yes. (On "Pearl" there will be a comment on the corresponding film, although he originally wrote a review for his page and they are combined there)
A little more background and let's get started. While preparing to shoot "X" in New Zealand, the team was quarantined due to the coronavirus. And, struggling in isolation, West, along with the performer of the main role, rolled up the script to the backstory. The studio got into the idea, gave the green light for the production of the second part, and soon approved the triquel. Thus, the landscape of horror films of 2022 has been replenished with as many as two good representatives. One is better, the other is worse.
Events "X" (the title refers to those glorious times when their authors could assign the same rating to adult films "X" so that cinemas at their own risk would show different Clockwork Oranges" to a quietly awesome audience) unfold in 1979. The owner of a strip club sees how the film industry is changing. Soon porn will come out from under the floor and will bring fabulous profits to its creators. Wayne (Martin Henderson, who played in the first American "Call "), don't be a fool, wants to jump into the last car of the train and become a popular producer. He takes his two dancers in his arms, one of whom is his girlfriend (Mia Goth), a former Vietnam veteran, a director with his lover and part-time sound engineer. And with this motley scooby-doo team, they go to a remote ranch, the owner of which turns out to be a suspicious old man. Wayne's plans to shoot the coolest porn movie with an art-house vision collide with the harsh reality of horror movies.
West in "X" not only conveys the spirit of the era of the sexual revolution, but also masterfully plays on the field of seventies slashers a la the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But not only that. Openly quoting Hitchcock's Psycho, the director uses the same technique: the film consists of two different-genre halves. Only if the master's picture began with a criminal detective, then West's is almost a melodramatic story about the search for himself and the desire to find a better life. However, the second half of what's in "Psycho", what's in "X" is already a bloody horror. The degree of bloodiness, of course, adjusted for time. West competently arranges the players, tools and circumstances of the murder, which not only "shoot ", but also cut, crush, bite, etc., etc. You won't be bored. Of course, it's not worth getting too attached to obvious victims, but the director gives enough material in the first forty minutes to not only reveal the characters, but also empathize with them. Yes, porn actors and porn actresses. And even before they begin to dismember. One scene that will eventually unleash a bloody flywheel is so powerful in dramatic terms that it would have a place in some serious HBO project about the adult industry. By the way, considering that, by pure chance, I actually watched the track first "Wednesday", and then "X", from the presence of Jenna Ortega, I quietly blew the whole movie away.
However, do not think that "X" was removed with some kind of claim. West, of course, as much as possible (and very successfully) he tries to build unusual shots, not to let the plot accelerate too quickly, but in the end it is a good slasher with, I repeat, various ways to send the actors to the next world. Black humor and in a good way strange circumstances that make you periodically ask yourself "What the hell is going on?", there is plenty here. Moreover, despite the piquancy of the tie, in terms of frankness, the picture does not stand out much against the background of other brothers in the genre. To paraphrase Sarik Andreasyan, von Trier will shoot dirty perverts what they want, but here, after all, the emphasis is on something else. Of course, I will not recommend watching with my family, but West does not cross the obvious lines. Well, if you approach the film completely unclouded, then up to a certain point, in principle, it is not clear where the story will steer: whether there will be mystical elements here, what or who will kill far from students. In order not to spoil the pleasure of watching, I just strongly recommend it to fans of old-school horror.
