Topical, very bold. Ari Astaire, thank you for being there and continuing to push your line as a young star of auteur cinema. The movie smacks of the early Cohens, and that's great.
But I liked it. Although at first it seems that nothing really happens at all, by the middle of the film the boiling point comes and it was difficult to break away from watching. Atmospheric cinema
The film runs for 2.5 hours, most of which is pretty boring. There's not the crazy thing that was in "All the Fears of Bo," and some interesting mixing happens only in the last half hour. After watching the movie, I didn't have any impressions at all. I don't understand why Ari Astaire decided to spend his time and ours on such a movie.
Ari Astaire in "Eddington" comes with Covid five years ago – during this time, the relevance of the epidemic has greatly decreased against the background of other threatening and creepy things. Everyone had time to reflect and even forget the distance of one and a half meters and the half-face masks.
Phoenix, who plays a man with borderline personality disorder, is still a powerful figure on the screen, but ten heads lower than the previous image from "All the Fears of Bo" – a truly great picture with one of the most masterly metaphors in cinema.
Astaire wrote the script for his new film himself again, traditionally located somewhere between the real world and unrestrained fantasy. At first, it all starts with an understandable confrontation between Phoenix and Pascal, each of whom wants to cling to the power of the town. By the end, the emotional level rises, and we gradually lose touch with reality.
If Phoenix opens fire with a machine gun, then Astaire shoots meanings and metaphors in the context of epidemic, anarchy, Black Lives Matter, sectarianism and other social issues. The director turns all these traumas of society inside out in his favorite style, but the town of Eddington and Astaire's ideas seem to run parallel to each other and cannot enter into synergy.
As a big fan of Astaire, I will believe that "Eddington" is something that the director personally desires at the moment, in order to move on to something potentially monumental. In an era of refined storytelling, the bold Ari Astaire is still a necessity for the arthouse world.
The first half of the film is introductory, leading us to catharsis. Sometimes the scenes are too long, but their meaning is important. And this part of the film is more like a social drama, which is basically what I expected to see in the film.
The middle (10 minutes) turns into a detective story, which, in my opinion, was the best part of the film.
The rest is a dog's dream in the genre of under-horror. I was hoping for the usual realistic power struggle between the sheriff and the mayor, which in fact involved blm, religious fanatics, child abuse, Indians and some kind of counter strike. Or what was it all about? The irony of everyday Americans? In short, disappointment.
And I can't disagree with the comment above that all the characters in this movie are mad. Each in his own way. But I don't think there are any good characters here.
Well, Joaquin Phoenix has once again proved his talent and well-deserved recognition. Great game!
Ahahaha!! That's a trash can! I don't even know how many times during the viewing I exclaimed "Fuck!"))) And yes, the movie also reminded me of the Cohens. A good topical satire with fucked up characters, just the way we like it! 👌
One hundred percent American cinema, which is "do you remember how we all fucked up in 2020? It definitely didn't go unnoticed." I didn't like it. I expected something else from Ari Astaire
@niggapig: At the same time, I've been thinking about the scene with Katy Perry for days now. Although I didn't like the movie, I didn't regret watching it, after all, Ari Astaire is a talented director.
I watched the films "Reincarnation" and "Solstice" with the director and screenwriter of the film, Ari Astaire, and, to be honest, I was quite lucky! But I didn't understand this one.. No, at first it seems like a political thriller, and then the harsh nonsense begins, which is just not clear where and why it came from.. It was played pretty well, you can't take that away from such actors, but either I didn't look carefully, or it was intended that way. And in the end, I didn't understand at all who the sheriff was fighting with there. There are no horrors here, as such, but corruption, idiocy, and sometimes outright stupidity of the state community are well shown. I don't dispute that we also have similar freaks, but they carry some kind of heresy on the Internet every day, but it's a little nice to realize that we haven't gone far ahead in this regard and there are fools all over the planet for hundreds more years. But in general, of course, I did not understand the film. Somehow, pure horror turned out to be closer to me than this kind of political satire, which turns into trash. Therefore, I will not recommend it, you decide for yourself.
@Gordey: ///And in the end, I didn't understand at all who the sheriff was fighting with there.///
(01:38:14) The jet is flying. With the emblem on the keel, "the hand grabbed the globe." And there are gunmen in it.
I Googled it, but I didn't find anything except English comments. They say this is the logo of the company building the data center. But (02:16:42) it is not to say that the schematic emblem on the date cent is similar. Maybe this coat of arms is familiar to cultural speakers? Some kind of private military company "Irinis"?
I was confused for most of the movie, but not in a bad way. It was just as confusing as 2020. I really had to think a little bit about what I had just watched to enjoy what was being talked about, I will definitely watch it again to immerse myself in it even more.
A typical American movie, made by and for Americans.
The cast is undeniably good, and they seem to be playing well. but the film, as a social drama, is too specific. and many moments are presented in the context of some things or events where you need to fumble. and you kind of understand something, but you stick it in anyway, or some other joke.
like satire and ridicule of cliches - mb. but I repeat, the film is purely for an American audience.
The story of how American society f**ked up. I agree that the film is, of course, very American and, perhaps, their audience will understand more. In general, it's quite surreal to look at events that seem to have happened recently, but at the same time, it seems like a long time ago.
The film from A24 with such a cast was hard to ignore. As a result, it turned out to be very exhausting to watch these almost two and a half hours. And not because of the timing, but because of its extreme congestion. And at the same time a dull first half. It happens that way. 2020 was not an easy year for everyone, many almost moved (some without a "no"), but the Americans distinguished themselves a little more than others, and this film vividly reflected this).
But maybe someone will be interested to see the naked Phoenix in the finale, if it's not a stand-in.
What a mess. If the film was supposed to show the inferiority of the American population, then I hope I never end up in America. The movie is some kind of circus of freaks.
It begs comparisons with "Battle after Battle," and in the end, Paul Thomas Anderson's approach turned out to be closer to me. There is a sense of hope after watching, but rather a feeling of diagnosis. Which is also the case, but I probably wanted to develop the topic in some places. At the same time, I rather liked the film than not. Maybe I won't get to the revision, but some scenes have already been vividly postponed. Ari Astaire is still a pretty unique director, and I'm wondering what he's going to do next.
Such a cast and such a disappointment...... The authors decided to put all the agendas in one pile and at the same time add pi..to add some suffering and action, it turned out to be a complete mess I don't recommend it to anyone (not even ass..dirty, hunted hipsters) All good movies!!!
The movie is too long. The first hour is boring enough to watch, but it's then that the main plot begins to develop. I won't write about the intellectual skills of the characters, but of course there are a lot of delusional actions. As a result, the film turned out much better at the exit than it showed itself at first. It's far from a masterpiece, but I don't understand the unjustifiably low rating either. Get to the bottom of it...
Please God, close the A24 already

P.S. Thanks for not having so much Pascal here.
Bitch, no way.
