@Quvatlh: You scratch your screamer with a life hack and go to the digest.

in my opinion, the film has not survived the test of time. the film is not scary at all, only slightly repulsive (although fans of golden rain from little girls will not understand me). only its high citation made this film famous. look at your own risk, but rather worth a look, because you will understand all the quotes on it.

In 2023, watching this movie is frankly boring. Although the acting is good, pleasant characters with personalities, and the atmosphere of those years. You won't find such a thing in modern horror.

Boredom, it was undoubtedly scary for his age, but now it's about nothing.

Reading the comments of the people above, I don't understand them, as for me this film has a great combination of a good plot and acting, yes, the special effects look a little weak ... but you have to understand that the film is 73 years old!!!
The director was able to create an eerie atmosphere. And the plot at that time was experimental. I believe that this work of art, there is no other way to call it, has a place to be in our lives. And understanding people will understand that this film had a strong influence on the development of films of this kind.

I've always liked this movie, and I think it can be compared in terms of the intensity of the plot and the acting to Rosemary's Baby. I really sympathize with the people who are bored by these films. All they have to do is watch newfangled action - free American charabikes , and use the language of the Anglo - Saxons , who openly laugh at us and continue to shit on our heads . These "screamers" are not to blame, they do not have a developed sense of taste due to their lack of intelligence. I would advise them to read more and learn our beautiful Russian language.

It's funny how different the perception of films is at different times. I read the news about the new film in the franchise and decided to review the 73-year-old original, which I once rated 8 points. And something didn't go off at all - it doesn't look so scary and creepy anymore, I watched it quite calmly, even with a feeling of boredom. Except that I disliked vomiting. The very structure of the film is disgusting, apparently because of the editing - it's ragged, jumping to different events and introducing new characters, often one can only guess how it came to these events and who this suddenly appeared character in the frame is. The acting is pretty weak. The pace of the narration is very slow. Yeah, I think this movie would have been in the cinema now - it would have been classified as a B movie, or even an arthouse movie, and would have gone unnoticed by most people, and the average score on the same KP would have been 5.

@Elven_Kelevra: I was wondering if the cult films of the past deserve any special appreciation. Well, admit it, this movie could have been scary and fast-paced at one time. Now, because of your watching, you don't see shock, you see boredom. but it is a product of its time, nevertheless, no one hoped to linger in the centuries.

@izkrys: of course, this is true in many ways, it was probably cool for its time. Well, I initially rated the film at the age of 15-16 when I watched it, then I apparently ignored all the other shortcomings. But still, even if you miss the scary moments that are unimpressive by today's standards, the length, outdated special effects, etc. - after all, the film is simply technically made, no matter how. What kind of horse racing is this, as if some pieces were cut out of a movie and crookedly glued together? And the actors' acting still doesn't take time - they could have played better.

@Elven_Kelevra: the 73rd film, you're watching it in the 26th, literally 50 years later. Do you know what happened 50 years before '73? 23! Take a look at the Andalusian Dog 1928. It was the height of editing! now you will see the twitching of a mentally ill person.
there is an answer to the question that you did not ask. What do I want from you? nothing, really) I totally agree that the movie is incredibly outdated. I just thought you could watch the Andalusian dog and give me your opinion.

@izkrys: come on, the 70s are still not the 20s when cinema was born, there are a lot of films from that time without such flaws. Flying Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1975 has excellent editing and good boat play. In the same place, for example, the Man who wanted to be king 75g, Sugarland Express 74g, Conformist 70g, etc. Not to mention the films with Pierre Reshard from the 70s - the humor may not look modern nowadays, but there are no problems with the same editing.
And the Andalusian dog, as far as I understand by today's standards, is a surreal arthouse designed to shock, it's probably not entirely correct to compare it with mass cinema.

I put off watching it for a very long time, because even those small fragments that came across scared me terribly. But the film is an absolute classic and it is impossible to analyze the genre and its development without checking the Exorcist, so I sat myself down according to all the rules to watch it - at night, without a phone and other distracting moments.

And here I disagree with the commentators, who are not afraid. Maybe it was the horrors of the 00s and beyond, with an abundance of dismemberment and screamers at every turn, that dulled our sense of fear. And the creeps of the early Internet hardened us by forgiving us.)

But for me, the film holds the bar, I was both creepy and scared, and in some places disgusted by makeup.

Yes, the exposition seems a little long (I watched the director's version, maybe an extra 10 minutes flew in here), but as if this is a sign of the regularity of cinema 50 years ago. But how much better this long-term illness looks, you have time to feel how long and painful it is to make a diagnosis, and to what state everyone is brought to seriously consider treatment with exorcism (the doctor suggested, by the way). It seems to me that the followers who remove this trope about obsession are in too much of a hurry for the sake of quick entertainment and lose realism even where it could be preserved.
Although the movie is very old, I had never seen it before, I knew the plot, of course. The film is somewhat delayed in the first half. Perhaps just typical for its time, but unusually slow in modern eyes. At the same time, the final part is quite intense. It was interesting and disturbing to watch it. The girl was made up very scary.) In general, it's not bad as an introduction to retro classics, when you take many strange moments for granted only because of the age of the film.
