Woman of the Hour

I hadn't heard anything about the film until the moment of its release and didn't know that Anna Kendrick would make her directorial debut. And I'm pleasantly surprised. It turned out to be a very decent, intense thriller with an unobtrusively presented message.
The only thing is that the synopsis seems very stupid after watching, it does not set it up quite in that way (and lies a little). Although the TV show occupies a significant part of the timekeeping, it is still a story specifically about a serial killer.

For me, Anna is already too strongly associated with comedy films to perceive a thriller about a serial killer with her normally. But for a directorial debut, it seems really good.

The film is based on real events and tells the story of a serial killer named Rodney Alcala, who killed many women in 1977-1979. One of the amazing facts about him is that he once appeared on the TV show "The Dating Game". The screenwriter of the film decided to focus his attention on this. The trailer of the film insisted that after the show, Cheryl's character would go on a date with Alcala, which, obviously, would not go the way she expects. And here lies the big problem. There is no heavy confrontation between a girl and a maniac and a desperate attempt to escape in the film. Because in reality, Cheryl refused to go on a date with him, because she considered him a creep. And after that, he killed several more women.

In the film, they still go to the cafe after the show, but this date, if you can call it that, is boring and lasts about 5 minutes. I.e. it turns out that Cheryl and Alcala's trip to the show does not have much significance for its history. Unsurprisingly, we are periodically shown how he killed other girls before and after that. It looks especially stupid that Russian distributors released this film in cinemas with the title "Date with the Monster", when most of the film shows us TV shows and other murders, and not a date. However, the original title "Woman of the Hour" also looks strange, because Cheryl does not affect anything. It would be much more logical to make Alcala the main character. Because before watching, I did not know how it really was, I was unpleasantly surprised and disappointed when I saw that everything that was shown to us had gone nowhere. Of course, I congratulate Anna Kendrick on her directorial debut, but I would not recommend this film.

The artistic value of the film is near zero. Incomprehensible jumps in time / girls. The men in the picture are almost all teasing (the security service in the show), or hating (the host), or doubting the words (the guy of the girl that Rodney found out on the set). The rescuers are policemen, but also those without faces and men who accidentally left the pavilion.

Anna Kendrick transferred her fee from the film to RAINN, an NGO for combating sexualized violence and another center for helping victims of crime.

From the details that are easily searched for about this show: Rodney was groom #1, there was no scuffle with another groom. Cheryl didn't change the questions. The prize of the program is tennis lessons and clothes for classes) there was no date after the show.

I won't say it's a masterpiece, but you can look at it once.

The film turned out to be neither fish nor meat. Neither the director's idea, nor the message, nor the subtext is clear. Which movie, those are the titles. Which is original, which is from Russian distributors.
I would call the film What girls are for.

Besides, it's unclear when the scene took place. it would be better if they wrote about it before the credits and showed it — and the conclusion, and how they released it, and how they killed it again and on. Well, I wasted my time.

It's not clear who the film was shot for. Even fans of the genre fall asleep in the middle. Just for the sake of Anna Kendrick's self-love

Well, I expected more from Anna Kendrick's directorial debut, which I really like. The movie is neither good nor bad. You can, of course, take a look to get acquainted, but to be honest, there are ways to spend an hour and a half much more exciting. By the way, yes, for the timing of one and a half, respectfully, without sarcasm.

With all due respect, I didn't like it. It's kind of empty. You don't feel sorry for the victims, a maniac doesn't scare you.

The story from the TV show is interesting, but not entirely reliable (as the user wrote above), and Rodney doesn't look like Rodney. If you make an actor's hair long, it doesn't mean that he will acquire the same facial features as the person he portrays. And Kendrick didn't look like the real Cheryl.

Personally, in my opinion, if you're making a film based on real events and if you're adding fiction for a more interesting story, at least make the exterior and scenery as similar as possible to real prototypes.

It's a good film about the fact that our lives, unlike movies, are not divided into comedy or tragedy. We see scenes with a maniac who kills girls, and then there's a TV show where gg asks questions to bachelors that make everyone laugh. And it's a reminder that bad people can be very close, no matter how we live. A comedy or a melodrama can easily turn into a tragedy in a second.

The actor in the lead role played a serial killer well. But he didn't play Rodney Alcalla. Firstly, he doesn't look like him at all, and secondly, if you've watched documentaries with Rodney, you'll understand what I'm talking about. Rodney is an extremely dangerous predator, it was visible even on the show, he has animal eyes there. And here the actor plays a kitten who tries to look like a lion. The movie itself is not bad, you can watch it once.
