the film is really surprising and exciting, although the idea itself is not particularly new. here the so-called vibes of Dorian Gray and something else like that slip by (for example, like this Korean cartoon https://myshows.me/movie/30253 / )
the film is exciting..it's creepy in places, sometimes turning into outright trash, but still a strong body horror / psychological thriller, one of the messages of which is still human life, not the desire to grow old and be in the best shape possible.
And yes, Demi Moore is beautiful here.
Everything can be praised here, but I especially want to highlight the acting of the two main characters, it was really very brave. Cinematography, make-up, editing - an amazing cinematic pleasure!
A film that can be interpreted in different ways. A film that speaks to the audience on rather painful and burning topics. Bravo!
2) A movie for once.
3) When I saw a syringe with light green liquid, I remembered the Resuscitator of the 80s
They took their heart out on these "vile men".
The scene of Dami going on a date and seeing herself in the reflection in the front door handle and "putting on makeup again" is vital.
Now I want to see a short film about how Dami Moore's character met Cage from "Long Legs" 😂
Further spoilers: when the main character watched the presentation, I got the clear impression that she and her new self are the same mind. I was sure that she and Sue would have at least the same memories. But no, these are absolutely two different people who only physically depend on each other, but that's where their connection ends. If Sue has absolutely no memories from Elizabeth, then how does she have any idea at all about how to move, walk, talk, exist? Who is she anyway? It is absolutely impossible to empathize with the main character! She wakes up, sees that Sue has overdone using her body, she is angry and indignant, they offer to stop the experiment and she refuses!!! For what? Sue literally stole her life force! After 3 months, when she wakes up as a decrepit old woman, still decides to stop the experiment and at the last moment changes her mind again? Why? Where did sympathy come from if Sue sucked the life out of her? There are a lot of questions about the actions of the main characters.
The horror component of the film is pretty good - it's a real Body Horror in all its glory.
The message of the film about ageism is a seemingly very relevant topic in our time, but why show it so obviously? We realized that a young female body is beautiful and sexy, why poke the viewer in the face with this body the whole movie? The same goes for the decrepit body of an old woman, we know that it is old, but the film focuses on every rotten nail. It feels like they poured water on purpose for the big timing of the film. Almost every male character in the film is a sperm toxicologist humiliating women. The film lacks interesting dialogues, metaphors, references, the agenda just pours on the viewer for two and a half hours. I can recommend the film to horror fans only for the sake of pictures and special effects.
I think there is something akin to motherhood, a child is also not a person himself, but people are ready to give their lives for their children, because this is a continuation, getting rid of the meaninglessness of existence, even when children behave abominably. Elizabeth sees this beautiful girl on the floor, and realizes that she can't do it (her grandfather told her so in the cafe "every time it's harder to understand why you deserve to exist), Elizabeth's world revolves around beauty, she can't choose herself between a double and herself, because all she has put her life on beauty and believes that it is possible to choose only for this.
The only thing about men: I think they were shown like this in order to focus attention on the fact that in the modern world they do not lose their relevance growing up. Whether he is ugly, rotten, misogynistic, he is still an influential boss, just already "wise", "experienced".
But yes, I also expected that the film would show the theme of ageism and sexism in a more veiled way. Through situations, references, dialogues (like the phrase that sounded: "smile! beautiful girls should always smile"), reflections, and not just buttocks and tits.
I understand that the heroine was fixated on her appearance, but macro photography of a young priest somehow took too much screen time. It could have been diluted with a deeper semantic load.
Well, I didn't really understand the ending 🫠 What they wanted to show those mutants who were always running somewhere 🤷♀️
Narcissistic splitting is called.
Elizabeth believes that she can only be loved for her beauty and popularity and creates Sue's "perfect" alter ego.
There's even a phrase at the end-"you're the only thing you can love me for."
When she is in Sue's mask, she feels brilliant and loved, and the part of herself that is old and suffering despises and does not want it to exist.
Returning to her split-off part, on the one hand she wants to become back, the brilliant one that everyone "loves", and on the other hand she is angry that she is loved only by "perfect".
If you look closely, then inside almost all of us there is our own Elizabeth (traits that we do not accept in ourselves and want to destroy) and our own Sue - the mythical ideal that we want to become so that we are loved…
In general, this film is a perfect illustration of the narcissistic splitting of the psyche.
Everything is shown amazingly accurately.
Therefore, somehow a lot of questions remain about how this substance works after all
One completely suppresses the other and the hi-narcissistic neurosis turns into psychosis.
I have already described the whole mechanism in my comment.
They cannot have signs of NRL "individually."
It's all a single psyche.
This is one person with an inner rejection of a part of himself.
When you criticize yourself for something, do you realize it?
More precisely, you feel it and do it automatically, not quite realizing that at this moment you, just like in the movie, are attacking yourself.
And you feel both feelings at the SAME time - for the annoying part (anger, aggression) and for the attacked part (pain, resentment, shame/guilt).
Well, in the film, this process in an artistic form, through the alleged simultaneous existence of two personalities, is clearly shown to us.
And I'm sorry, but to be honest, I don't really understand what you're arguing about.
In the film, one personality split into two different personalities.
In reality, in the NRL, this happens inside one skull 🤷♀️ They split and one is suppressed by the other.
And nrl is because the original neurosis of the main character is that I want to become an ideal so that I can be loved. I want to become the BEST version of myself.
Dissociative disorders have other causes. (Although there is a technically similar splitting mechanism, but I repeat - the reasons for splitting are different). And the consequences, respectively, are also different.
I have tried to understand your reasoning, although it is quite confusing. I don't like to find fault, but you know, if I see a pillar, then why not fuck up)))
Given the high comorbidity of NRL with other mental disorders, the presence of dissociative disorders is quite likely. Elizabeth is under extreme stress, and this is already enough for dissociative reactions to arise as a way to cope with harsh realities.
Sue has not shown us much in communicating with others, but it can be noted that she does not have a grandiose conceit, and she does not believe in her exclusivity. She does not use others to achieve her own goals and does not claim special rights. She probably even knows how to sympathize. I didn't notice any arrogance or arrogance in her behavior. In conversation, she very modestly stated that she could only work a week from now. In general, she is young and ambitious, like any actress, nothing more. She behaves differently with Elizabeth, but it's more like a child's hostility to an annoying parent.
To be honest, I don't want to give you a full-fledged lecture about mental disorders, this is still a place to discuss films / TV series, and not a discussion platform about how the psyche works)
But if you are really interested, then you can read first about the difference between hidden (deficient), grandiose and perverse narcissists.
And secondly, about such gradation as accentuation of character - neurotic disorder - mental disorder.
After all, at each of these levels, narcissistic trauma will manifest itself in sooo different ways.
In general, when you figure this out, then my reasoning will no longer seem confusing to you)
But I even wonder why you are so convinced of your rightness and perseverance you see only narcissistic disorder. And isn't that why you are so well versed in this topic? Is there a problem? Unlike you, I have agreed and conceded at least three times, and I am even going to do as you advised. Everything is clear with me. But tell me honestly: are you grandiose or perverse?)))
I've already written everything to you - study the topic and you'll understand everything for yourself. And the questions why I am so sure of my rightness will disappear from you)
But Demi Moore, at 61, looks amazing!
Quade is a devil..
Great soundtrack and visual!
But if you think about how it works in general, it becomes somehow weaker, but all the other advantages cover it for me!
And at the end, I immediately have district #9 and Carrie and radiance in my head.. The last scene is so general, Doctor Who (adaptation of a stolen joke)
Overall, a great movie!
I remember a woman who consisted of a strained face with eyes and a mouth (a long-lived woman) in season 2, like with Tennant . And there seemed to be a similar monster)
The downside for me is that the movie is too gross, especially at the end. And at the same time it is very long – 2.5 hours. According to the trailer, it seemed to me that it was a thriller, but it turned out that it was a satirical body horror. It's a good thing I didn't take popcorn to the movies. If at first everything was perceived normally, then in the end I wanted it to end as soon as possible. A couple of people even left the hall 5 minutes before the end credits. And some girl couldn't hold back the sounds of whining in disgust.
The most annoying thing is that the images from the movie popped up in my head for a couple of days after watching it, even though I didn't want to. In general, if you are a fan of this, then this movie is for you. If you have a more gentle psyche, then it's better not to watch it.
The body horror genre is revealed here with a bang. The plot is another interpretation of the worship of beauty and the ideal, which we have seen many times in various variations (already in the 60s, What happened to Baby Jane already appeared on the subject of the obsolescence of actresses in Hollywood).
Another attempt at a statement about the consumer society. The installation is clip-on, quite appropriate for this picture, the colors are twisted - all according to the standards of modern tic-toks. I want to mention the work of the operator - it causes admiration and disgust. We're too close to all of this. Everything is too detailed, large, exaggerated.
Dami Moore is wonderful in this role, and to some extent this is a personal story for her (you can remember her going on the track, after which everyone discussed the unsuccessful plastic surgery of the actress). The allusion to the abuse of any means of prolonging youth is understandable here, including body modifications, which are plastic surgery, which sometimes brings people to a monstrous appearance. By the middle of the film, I was a little tired of what was happening and was already waiting to see to what extent the ending would be twisted and exaggerated, and in principle it was natural and looped with the beginning.
I won't say that the film shocked me, for art-house lovers it's flowers, yes, abomination is combined with beauty, but I didn't see something unique and new. However, the very presentation of this picture in this genre to a wide audience with famous actors is interesting in itself.
7/10
To describe this film in a nutshell: frankly and vile. There is no feminist message here, as many write. Ridiculing women who are chasing standards is already commonplace in society. Now it seems that everything can be called feminism if the main role is played by a woman. And it's sad, of course. What happens towards the end is difficult to describe in cultural words: psychedelic trash, a lot of violence. And you can't get rid of the feeling of nausea. Yes, within the framework of the genre, it probably should be, but it's terribly simple. The most amazing thing for me is that it was all filmed by a woman... I didn't expect such a setup, of course. Impressionable people should not watch this.
Well, a woman is quite capable of removing an abomination, just as a gentle soulful work can come out from under a man's hand. In life, women very often encounter the vile and disgusting (and I'm not even talking about violence) and are quite capable of perceiving it and even transforming it into art. She had already had a Survivor before - who had just set foot on this path of comprehension, objectification, with an attempt at twisting and toughening. By the way, I can note that it is in Europe that women more often go towards the art-house presentation of their ideas, including on the way to the "flesh/mezky", before that there was already "Raw", "In my skin" - these are also French films.
Yes, the semantic fullness is dense, but it is not for everyone. If I had known in advance that there would be SUCH a thing, I would not have gone. Then I had nightmares and the mood at the bottom was in the evening.
And what is in between is an absolute overkill of everything: from the number of fifth points in the frame to the message, which is deliberately convex here. And all this is organic, because the film revels in its overkill. And the viewer who will be on the same wavelength with the film will not be able not to enjoy this energy.
Delight. I will definitely review it sometime
If the main body realized that they were essentially 2 different consciousnesses, then why continue the experiment.
Why does Grandma run so fast?
Where did a few square meters of free space come from in the house, where the young woman built a pantry.
The general message is straightforward and clear, I think there is not much to discuss here.
And how deftly Sue made a pantry, just a jack of all trades🤣 sorry, a little stuffy vibe ahahha
In addition to the extra meters and the obvious higher professional rank of a TV personality's tile stacker, I was also worried about the following questions:
– why do such crappy instructions for the product (yes, in the kit, to take a swab for yourself on covid injection, and it is better and clearer spelled out)
– how did they formalize the contract with Sue, she doesn't have any documents!!!
– if your body is lying on the tile for so long, then bedsores will definitely appear and then you'll shake your beautiful ass! At the age of 60, you need to know this (and they have the same mindset)
To be honest, the number of negative reviews is surprising
Meanwhile, in the comments, Voronin connoisseurs have already piled on two for unreliability. It's a pity to spend thousands of rubles on this, and the critics are stupid, and the jury at the festival are fools. Well, there is no logic in the film, this film needs more logic! And please let the grandmother run slower, otherwise people in the comments burned that the film unreliably shows the grandmother! 🥶
In general, I really liked the movie, and I liked the comments too
Here, on the contrary, she has no brains, because she did not understand the message of the film.
They were correctly named - Voronin connoisseurs, they only have a superficial laugh, it's not about them to think and reason.
The color, the hyperbolized picture, the close-up, the silence, the focus on one thing made this film 🎥
And the main message is that it (a change, a strong rejuvenation of oneself) is not worth it
And as a society, we still need to change and change, and continue to learn to accept growing up and aging with respect and care for ourselves.
UPD: Demi Moore is simply gorgeous without makeup (1h.38min.) 😁😁😁
A film with a very interesting philosophical message, after all, dislike and rejection of oneself is a very big tragedy !
It was very beautifully shot .
But it's unclear why Demi Moore didn't drink the liquid young
It is not clear why none of them remembered what happened in 7 days. But supposedly they are one
Honestly, the ending is just a nasty horror , as for me, I was very much spoiled by this film aftertaste, I don't even really want to advise someone, it's disgusting 🤮
And the ending, as for me, is incomparable. Catharsis in its purest form
And then yesterday I'm gorging, drinking, shooting up, and in the morning I get up and tear my hair out of anger and, like a pig in a joke, I promise not to eat shit again. And without substance, this happens in real life. This is just how carelessness and unwillingness to think about the consequences are shown.
There are many metaphors and themes raised in the film. But for some reason, some viewers want to choose only one, dismissing all the others
upd: Oh, or is it about Margaret? Well, then not very much. right now every second actress on the screen shows boobs
Damn, well, then it's a shame for Moore somehow. But on the other hand, it's a strong act, to show yourself like that for the sake of the role. Not everyone would dare
But Margaret is already a fire, so what's the difference
If you briefly describe the meaning of the film, then you can use the phrase "don't run away from yourself".
After watching this movie, you really go away for a long time and think about the movie. In general, the idea is interesting, something similar may have been in some other films, but for some reason it seems original and interesting here. You can even believe that this can really happen, but that's until the moment the new Sue comes on stage. Well, here's where the real game happened, which is impossible to believe, and the brain is trying to reject it) It's just too much overkill with thrash, this endless blood for all the audience and the whole hall) Thrash so much that it's just good and you laugh at the game happening on the screen😄
The third act turned out to be as disgusting as possible, compared to the first two)
It is a very peculiar film, impressions and emotions after watching it will definitely not be forgotten for a long time, so I do not regret watching it😄
Rather, if there is nothing but appearance, then you will end up like a heroine. She didn't have any hobbies in her original body. No friends, no family. There is no show, not even a manager. No way.
My God, where does she get such construction skills from? Repair the damn thing.
Both actresses are gorgeous, Moore is simply amazing, I haven't seen many pictures with Quollie, but she left her mark on my heart😄
Secondly, this movie will be visited by those who liked the Neon Demon.
Thirdly, after watching it, you will definitely not forget about what is happening in the film for another couple of days.
Those who served in the army do not laugh in the circus. Anyone who has watched all three parts of the Terrifying in a row is not afraid of the bodyhorror Substance. And they also say that the Substance won the Best Screenplay award at this year's Cannes Film Festival. It's scary to think who lost there, if there is such a winner.
No, the Substance is quite a decent movie. It was shot by a certain Coralie Farja, who was noted earlier for the episode of the Sandman and the revenge thriller with the original title Revenge (well, actually, the survivor of the Russian box office, but we are trained in languages!). I haven't seen either of them yet. Even if Madame is one of all sorts of feminists, she is clearly one of the smart ones and knows how to attract the attention of a male audience without annoying all these white cisgender chauvinists. Firstly, Demi Moore, who played one of the two main roles here, was fully returned to us. Those who watched Striptease thirty years ago will wipe away a stingy tear. As they say, someone was not afraid to give, someone was not afraid to take - in the sense that Farja took everything off bluntly and Moore took everything off bluntly (but there is one caveat). Well, if without any dirty jokes about age, Moore looks gorgeous. Secondly, the Substance is generally a very, very beautiful film in terms of pictures, camera angles and, of course, the actresses involved (let some - let's not point fingers at Hollywood newcomers - and used all sorts of overlays!). Although slightly cheating (overlays!), Margaret Qualley ("Once upon a Time in ... Hollywood ", "Poor-unhappy ", "Types of Kindness "), who made up Moore's screen pair, also shows class. In fact, of course, we are not talking about any nudity, although the actresses supported each other during the difficult days of filming - both Moore and Quolli had a great frolic. The latter here in general strongly resembles not only externally, but also in the manner of playing Emma Roberts, who escaped from the next season of American Horror Story.
And in such contrast with the female beauty, the director gives out a bodyhorror. Yes, it works as it should. Perhaps some of the most susceptible natures will be upset by the Substance, but Farge does not set an overly serious tone of what is happening from the very beginning. The hyperbolization of what is happening is visible to the naked eye. The same producer (Dennis Quaid) in cheap suits (well, either I don't understand something about fashion). In the end, everything generally turns into a bloody farce worthy of the Sinister Dead of Raimi and the Living Dead of Jackson. In short, as for me, this is not David Cronenberg. Here Cronenberg's son manages to shoot in his style, so that he really wants to turn away from the screen from the ongoing transformations, but here it seems as if satire outweighed the horrors. Not that it's a bad thing. Again, the viewer is gentle now, you need to be gentle with him. They scared me, then danced beautifully. Everything is according to the precepts of the pie poems.
In general, if you do not think (i.e. literally do not think at all) about what is happening, then the Substance is a good spectacular picture that can both humor and horror. But what I lacked was the logic of what was happening. That's why I'm surprised by the award for the script. Well, like... "Substance" at the same time does not shine with originality, and suffers from a lack of logic. As for originality: even give or take in the same genre there is a magnificent work by Robert Zemeckis with Demi Moore's ex-husband, Bruce Willis, by the way. I'm talking, of course, about the black comedy Death suits her, where such topics were revealed much better: about aging, about the return of former youth, and about rivalry. Well, the nastier transformations were shown in the same Fly. Of course, the effects have gone ahead, but some kind of fig in my pocket feels like it's all make-believe.
As for logic... Of course, Substance is a metaphor, a parable, and so on blah blah blah. I even saw in the picture not so much a layer about the relationship between the stars and the public, for which the stars suffer, as about the relationship between fathers and children. As children, being an extension of their parents, their modified copy, they can put pressure on mothers and fathers, squeezing the last juices out of them, and at the same time parents forgive absolutely everything, suffering unimaginably at the same time. Well, at least in the middle, I saw this story from this angle. But if I remove this thought, whether it was consciously laid down by the director or not, then it is very difficult to believe in the realism of what is happening (yes, this is a horror movie; no, I am not crazy to believe in horror movies; you understand what I mean). Because the finale is clearly not about fathers and children, but still about the audience and media personalities. This whole topic is from "and remember - you are one person" not disclosed. I would understand the actions of the main character if she felt what the other one was feeling, if she got all these nice things, if her consciousness was divided and/or relocated, but no. Nothing is said about this. In fact, this is a completely different person... By the way, yes! Wasn't this supposed to be a younger version of Demi Moore or not? And where are all these fans of conspiracy theories who would have figured out a complete copy of a mega-popular person not so long ago? Or is it possible to expose only the ageless Keanu Reeves, who lived in different time periods? No one even raised the question, why do you look so much like the actress whose place you came to? In short, this is a completely different person, to whom you give half your life for some kind of devil and at the same time you are still thinking about whether to end the experiment? No profit to the matrix. Prank, sorry, the metaphor failed.
And the movie is cool. I do not exclude that a good franchise can come out of this type of independent cinema, as it was with Doomsday Night, when all the absurdities were intelligently explained in the sequel and the triquel. But, most likely, the substance will turn out to be a one-time dose, which the authors dispose of.
Rating: 6 existences out of 10
Disgusting? Yes
Is it worth watching? Yes
overall, I liked it, although the super-mega-duper illogical actions of the main character, but I liked it! I don't regret watching it, although I probably won't review it.
and there was absolutely no disgust and horror, as, for example, after watching true edge and the news... such made-up stories are no longer scary at all, rather funny, so I'm thrilled!
Stylish! It was shot incredibly beautifully, Demi Moore is great, the music is very well chosen, and it makes sense - don't chase youth, beauty and approval! love yourself regardless of public opinion and others, accept yourself and love yourself!
P.S.
for some reason, for me there are vibes in the film "Requiem for a Dream" and "Radiance"
I'll say so that the ending was smeared as for me, I won't say where, but at the moment where she took another injection and turned into a monster, then at this moment it was better to do like she was fatally disappointed by what she saw. She began to walk down the street in a panic, with all this, her body would decompose and then she totally turned into a cake and at that moment her face, as in the movie, stopped at her star. But with the performance, as for me, it was already too superfluous. Lately, even the directors have problems with the endings, either they are going into a mess with the thoughts in my head, or I am already slightly degraded and do not understand anything.
In general, even though the ending did not go in, I put 4-
There are still questions about the script, but again, it's forgivable for the sake of the genre.
As for the grandmother, who ran like a real athlete, I think there is no point in looking for pitfalls here, they just did it for more dynamics. If Grandma were walking slowly and Sue was running after her, in the best traditions of 80s horror, that would also raise questions. And so, it turned out funny, but bright and dynamic.
Thanks to the team, for me this is one of the best films I've watched this year. Demi Moore is the queen!
In my opinion, still not.
And "Substance" is a straight body horror without reservations, in the classical sense, with body transformation and all that. Just this body horror in a movie with Gulkin's dick. The last third of the film.
And for the first two hours you sit and look at the glamour, tits, assholes and clip dances. And do you think "your mother, and the horrors will begin or not?"
In this regard, "Raw" is much more horror than "Substance". But "Substance" is a bigger BODY horror. Something like this
As for the movie "Raw" - well, firstly, on the same IMDb, it is declared exactly as a body horror (and who am I to argue with this), secondly, Julia Ducourneau herself told in an interview why she turned out to be a body horror (and who am I to argue with the author of the picture?), thirdly, yes, this movie shows the transformation of the human body, starting from a severed phalanx, if my memory serves me correctly, and also a eaten leg, and in general as such an act of cannibalism, which is also a transformation of the body without the possibility of returning it to its original position.
As for Hannibal, the series passed me by, "Hannibal Ascension" and "Hannibal" 2001, I no longer remember, and in "The Silence of the Lambs", screen time was not devoted to the act of cannibalism/ transformation of the body, as such. As far as I remember, gg only talked and chewed something. That is, conditionally, if Dr. Lecter had chewed off the hand of the heroine Jodie Foster, yes, it was a film with elements of body horror. And if he had chewed off her hands and other body parts throughout the film, it would have been a body horror in its purest form.
Thus, some films about werewolves, for example, the 2001 Werewolf (Ginger Snaps), we can also somehow record in this genre, or here, for example, there is a film "Elena in a Box" by Jennifer Lynch, which, alas, failed, but it also has a direct relationship to body horror (although for for most people, it's not horror at all). Because they are about mutations/transformations of the human body.
Now, as for the Substance. What is the last third of the film devoted to body horror, if in the first half hour the charming Sue gets out of the back of the heroine Moore? Who then stitches this back together? This is the real element of body horror. And then, according to the rolled-up, we are shown changes in the body of the heroine Moore, of which there are plenty before the 3rd act. The fact that this is not scary enough for you is another subjective question.
In total, both "Raw" and "Substance" are both body horrors. As for the shooting, the sound, the pumping, the problems-I'm a plus to the "Substance", for me "Raw" was not so interesting at the time, but again, it's a taste)
And a severed finger is such a horror) Then the comedy "4 rooms", where the dude's finger was cut off on a bet, will we also take it to body horror? No, of course not. If any injuries are attributed to body horror, then all war films can be recorded here at once. The term simply loses its meaning then.
Here it is necessary to draw a line — where they just show a sea of blood and violence (and this is most horror films), and where exactly is body horror.
After all, there should be a focus on the horror of the body, the transformation of the body into something disgusting and frightening. Here are "Fly", "Tusk", "Something", "Color from other worlds", "Substance" again — these are body horrors without question. But "Raw" and "Hannibal" — here the horror is in the act of eating, not in disgust for the body. Here, the characters are disgusting and terrible inside, not outside.
And why not argue with the director) The author is dead, and her opinion is not the ultimate truth, even in relation to her own film. Maybe there was only one idea, but we can judge by what happened in the end
By the way, Julia Ducourneau is alive, and fortunately, she is in good health, so you have a chance to express your thoughts to her)
He is not as disgusting as Cronenberg's Fly (this is not a claim), but some scenes are certainly disgusting. But here, nevertheless, the visual is not used to cause gag reflexes in the viewer, the picture conveys the emotional mood of the heroine very well. And yes, I repeat, the film is a metaphor - therefore, in some scenes they exaggerate what is happening as much as possible
But after watching the movie, it leaves a pleasant aftertaste when you want to discuss what you saw on the screen over a cup of coffee.
For example, I saw not only a satire on Hollywood beauty standards, or an instructive story about a double life, but also caught a layer dedicated to the topic of drug addiction (young Sue is euphoria, high from a dose, and old Elizabeth is a state of withdrawal. And the higher the dose, the faster it destroys the body)
And the film skillfully ridicules stereotypes. For example, a lustful producer who is very disgusting to eat shrimp (the scene I would say is even more disgusting than the final transformation at the end) is, as I understand it, a reference to Harvey Weinstein (in the film, the producer's last name is Harvey), or a loser classmate, a worried neighbor, empty-headed handsome, dummy shareholders who need boobs..
It's definitely worth watching the movie for the sake of the visual experience. The color solutions with the audio track are executed at a height. You will experience powerful emotions
I am a person who already feels sick from the sight of injections, but apart from these scenes, everything else was more or less clear…
What did you want from a movie with such a plot? That everyone will be happy?
I saw a comment that the film reminded me of "Requiem for a Dream" on Vibe. I partially agree with this.
Especially when you consider that, despite the length of some scenes in the finale, the Substance is a meaningful multi-layered story, with its obvious morality in line with reconciliation with oneself, self-acceptance or, conversely, the ability to spoil one's life. At the same time, the Substance manages to avoid the arthouse disease that has affected the body horror genre as a whole. She is the illegitimate daughter of Dorian Gray and the Living Dead, a product of the era of silicone and biohacking, hypocritical lifestyle with admixtures of anabolics and the cult of annoying success. Simply put, a good sarcastic movie.
But as I understood it, at the moment of division, consciousness is copied into a new body. In other words, you are aware of yourself, but in a new body. And you start a new life in a new young body with all the knowledge and experience of the past years.
And now, after the transfer, we essentially get two different people. A young version of Elizabeth with self-awareness, but with a new life.
This explains then why they started messing with each other - Elizabeth is gorging on her belly, making a mess, and Sue is in no hurry to wake Elizabeth up at all and just devours her vital juices (balancing injection)
And the fact that they said in the video that you are one person is in fact just a marketing ploy. Well, remember, they often tell you the truth in advertising.
Therefore, the substance does not actually bring any benefit to Elizabeth. She clones herself, but she can't experience those new emotions, live the new life that Sue is living. She really becomes a Matrix, a nourishment for another person. I would even say Sue is essentially a parasite.
Therefore, in answer to your question, I will add that Elizabeth does not actually receive any point. The company just tricked her by selling an expensive drug
Otherwise, how did the nurse remember Elizabeth? The substance was offered to her by a young nurse, and an old one spoke to her in the cafe. According to your logic, he shouldn't have remembered her? You never know who the young man talked to?
But no, they all remember. Because it is one consciousness.
It's just that Sue and Elizabeth didn't want to take responsibility for each other's actions (actually for their own actions).
"No, it wasn't me who was shooting up and drinking yesterday, but today my body is rotting alive. No, it wasn't me who was gorging yesterday, but today I have + 5 kg."
To which the manufacturer told her — "You, you, it's all you. Stop shifting the responsibility." There's nothing in the film to indicate that it's marketing and the manufacturer has deceived her. He was telling her the truth
If they have one consciousness for two, which wanders from body to body with the help of blood transfusion, then it kills the whole conflict. Why would Elizabeth please tell me to get drunk on chicken if she feels a sense of self-worth, importance, incredible new emotions.
You have transferred your consciousness to a new body. We received the first recognition and success. You are loved again. Wow, that's great! And when you return to your old body, why will you try to make a mess of yourself? You know- 7 days will pass now- and you are back on the horse. We just have to wait. What will you do? Will you start destroying yourself?
Then remember the moment Elizabeth woke up after the first violation of Sue's rules. She goes out into the living room- and her face is just horrified by the mess that Sue left behind. Tell me, if she remembered, would she be surprised by such a picture? I think she would be in a good mood, on the contrary. She just had sex with a handsome guy. After all, intimacy is not only a physical sensation. All of us feel uplifted, energized, when we spent a night of love. Here's the first proof that Sue and Elizabeth are two different people.
Another example of proof that Elizi does not remember 7 days, and these are two rare people, is how she watches a show with Sue. Okay, the first scene is when she watches TV and sees Sue's fitness, well, here you can write off the fact that she looked at herself from the outside. But what about her reaction when she watches the show and Sue is asked questions and she answers? If this is one whole - the same consciousness, will you humiliate yourself? It doesn't look like self-irony at all, it's a specific conflict that only proves that these are different people.
Otherwise it is very convenient to interpret such ambiguous moments that are explained simply by human nature, but ignore the scene with the nurse) Explain it to me first.
Elizabeth didn't mess with Sue until her finger rotted from abuse. This was revenge in return. Are you familiar with the concept of self-torture? When a person, for example, eats too much, and then goes to vomit, starves himself, kills himself in the gym? Some even practice self-harm. This is all there is in real life.
Why would Elizabeth get drunk on chicken? And you ask the millions of people who actually do this. Because her life is miserable and meaningless. In these 7 days, she just exists, not lives. And the only joy is to get drunk delicious.
It is precisely in the film that detachment is shown to us in two different states. When she's Sue, everything comes easy to her and she feels great, she hates and despises her pathetic version. And when she is a pathetic Elizabeth herself, she envies and hates Sue for her success and carelessness.
This is a metaphor for how people ruin their bodies with alcohol, parties, and drugs in their youth. Only it is stretched not for 30 years, as in real life, but for 7 days. Because as long as we're young, we don't give a shit about the consequences. And at the age of 50, we begin to ooah and gasp and wonder how we could be such morons. So the young Sue did not think about the consequences, but Elizabeth oohed and aahed for her.
Then why did she save her in the end? It doesn't stick in your interpretation. Why save Sue if Elizabeth only hates her and won't be able to feel her triumph? Why, if she doesn't even see her success? I would have let her die then. But no. Apparently I wanted to go to the New Year's show, because she would have gone herself, Elizabeth. She did it for herself.
Here are these two examples, first break down how the nurse remembered her and why she saved Sue, and then everything else.
If they wanted to show that the supplier had deceived them, they would have clearly shown it. And all that was shown to us was Elizabeth's distorted perception.
Well, I'll add another thing, since you're also splitting the branch for me into several messages — if Sue is a separate person, not Elizabeth, then how did the monstrous Elizabeth get out of her in the end? She says on stage at the end that it's me, the old me. If my memory serves me right, she says "I am both Sue and Elizabeth". And she came out of the body of a young woman. Then how did she know who was who, where she should go, how to dress and what to say if all versions should have their own separate memories?
I can't find the full version of the film, it's been deleted from everywhere. And so I would give specific quotes
The supplier did not deceive them, but did not tell the main thing. Yes, this is one person, but who said that in the future they will have one consciousness for two. Why would they then take turns calling the supplier and complaining about each other) in general, this whole organization is very murky - only the phone number from the contacts, and a presentation video made on the knee.
I repeat, Sue is a clone of Elizi, she has memories of her past years.
The monster is a side effect of the substance, as the rules clearly say to use it only once.
Of course Elizabeth knows the monster, since Sue has a copy of Elizabeth's consciousness, and the monster is an ugly clone of Sue. That's why she dressed up for the show)
Remember the scenes of how they reacted to the mess... Tell me, would you scream and react like that when you ate, put the plate in the sink, went out somewhere, returned to the kitchen, and you had a dirty plate, would you scream?
Plus, this aged finger. Neither Sue nor Elizi knew that there would be such an effect if they did not switch places. But after the side effect became clear, Sue continued to live without an exchange anyway. She didn't care that her body would start to age very quickly. Do you think, having the same consciousness, she would have continued to kill herself?
Elizabeth lives alone, according to the film it is not clear if she has any relatives at all. But judging by the huge apartment without a photo, it becomes clear that even if there is, she does not communicate with anyone, but has chosen a career as a star.
She perceives Sue as a daughter, a desire to realize in her what she herself did not realize (but or realized, but it's gone, but she wants to repeat)
Even at the moment when she injected the lethal injection into Sue's body, she stopped at the very last moment. As if giving Sue another chance
Try to reduce your arrogance and consider the option that you didn't understand something, and not everyone around is stupid and filmed a movie with holes.
»»Would you yell at the mess?
You really don't read hangover allegories here, for example? Yes, imagine, people in real life can party all night, and get up in the morning and fuck what they were doing. You've never heard people in the hallway say, "I don't know how I dared half the refrigerator." Sue's surprise is just a metaphor for that. It's about being irresponsible for your behavior. NOWHERE was it directly shown to us that she literally did not remember last night. She simply denied responsibility for herself yesterday in a new guise.
That's right, that Sue continued to hang out and live off her old self. Just like people in ordinary life, when they are young, they break away, smoke, drink, and expand, taking away years of their lives in the future. And we still have the same consciousness, yeah. What's not clear here? The metaphor is in the forehead.
»»Maternal care
Seriously?)))) Take pity on this poor owl, she's already tearing up how hard you pull her. Here the theme of motherhood in the film is completely absent from the word. She could only love herself in the person of Sue. She wasn't her child, and she didn't even think of her that way.
Such conflicts are shown differently in movies. If we had been told at the beginning that because of her career she was unable to have children and was burdened by it, then yes, there would have been such an interpretation. But in the film there is no tragedy of motherhood in any scene.
She stopped with the injection only because she gave herself a chance, she wanted to be loved and wanted to be on the show.
She remembers last night, how she walked, swelled. He goes out into the living room, and there's just a well, empty bottles, dirt and mess. And for some reason, the director of the film asks Dammy Moore to act out surprise, disgust, anger. The question is, why?
She remembers that she was partying the night, it's a mess and a mess. Before sex, she ran for a dose, she was obviously ill, but she was not drunk. And when she got involved, she blossomed that her new boyfriend noticed it.
And then, remembering the consequences that the body ages quickly, that it turns out it is impossible not to change places for more than 7 days, otherwise what the heroine is most afraid of happened, she continues to break the rules.
Is she an idiot? Insane?
You understand how with this approach you just kill the heroine.
Why should she deny responsibility for herself? Well, I went out, well, I slept with her, well, I left a mess. Why would she behave like that?
Just the same, Sue hangs out and irresponsibly approaches the rules of the company, because this is a different person.
It's not the same person who just changes costumes - today I'm in the image of an old woman, and now I'm young and beautiful. Just what was shown on the screen, it does not fit into the conflict
You're trying to turn over such an obvious thing, as if to say, no, it seems to you that like different people, just a metaphor.
But this is not a metaphor. These are really two different people. Don't understand what kind of dubious organization is offering to participate in the experiment. Where they are, who they are, nothing is known. There is only a phone number. And it would seem why inject yourself with some kind of green stuff, but the feeling of becoming young again outweighs common sense
As always it happens - the man deceived her (here's another metaphor for you) promised a new version of himself, but in fact she raised a parasite who lives at her expense. Not only has Elizabeth become a nourishment, but she is also destroyed by the fact that she was born, revealing new flesh from her body (yeah, of course there is no topic of motherhood here)
And you're saying it's all one person? Well, if that's the case, we're really watching some kind of idiot who kills the heroine's sense of empathy altogether.
In fact, the point is quite different. Let's turn to the original source, namely the director of the film, what is her vision (from the interview):
So for me, making this gesture is my way of resisting stereotypes to feel stronger. But, in my opinion, it is impossible to win a battle alone. So it's not a fight between the heroines, it's not her with herself. It's her against the rest of the world. That's how I imagined the "battlefield"
The film is a feminist statement against violence, sexual objectification, and how women are perceived in society.
From the interview: "Substance" is clearly a 300% feminist film, for me it's a really strong political statement.
Therefore, it absolutely does not matter if they have the same consciousness for two or if they are different people.
But if there is one consciousness for two, then we no longer get a victim of a perverted peasant society with a woman's body erected into a sexual cult, but a masochistic old woman who has gone to please this very society and shine in it.
And if, nevertheless, as a result of the experiment, we observe two different people, this opens up a place for conflict just the same acceptance of oneself, one's old age, and outgoing popularity.
Having put her personal life on the line for the sake of her career, and at the end of her life, having received a kick in the ass, trying to regain her former greatness, Elizabeth gets a parasite living at her expense. But this is just more interesting to watch.
In the end, Elizabeth Sparkle accepts her imperfection. The woman experiences the final transformation into a monster, but in this she sees liberation. According to Coralie Farge, before the end, Elizabeth finally gets rid of her complexes and does not feel depressed.
"Finally, she doesn't have to care about how she looks, she doesn't have to care about what people think. For the first time, she has dedication, tenderness. For the first time, Elizabeth looks at herself in the mirror and doesn't criticize herself. She decides: "Okay, I'll go on stage, it's me, I have the right to my place in this world," the director said.
First, give a link to the interview in English or give quotes in English. It is unclear whose and what quality of translations I do not need. Moreover, with your formatting, it is unclear where your thoughts are and where the quotes are.
Well, it's a thesis. There are many motives in this film, including feminist ones, and allusions to facial plastic surgery in Hollywood, and self—mutilation, and the fading of stars - it's all understandable. How does this contradict the thesis that they are one? No way.
And here's the main question that everyone misunderstands here is asking — if Sue is just a separate parasite, and Elizabeth does not live life in her body, does not have her memories, does not catch her orgasms, but only rots from her abuse — why does she even need her? Why would she change with her every week if Elizabeth just passes out for a week and doesn't remember anything afterwards? For what? And how did she remember her motorcycle lover then?
Even the old nurse told her that every time there were fewer reasons and desires to be old. That is, it is a choice of what to be, and not giving up your place to someone else.
They are different people at the same level at which a person can be different at 25 and at 50. And when they moved, their character and perception of themselves and the world changed in the same way. But they have the same consciousness.
And everything that happens in the finale with the monster can generally be perceived as arthouse and glitches of a dying brain. Otherwise, explain how the decaying monster was let into the dress by a guard with the words "Oh, finally, everyone is waiting for you." In this film, metaphors are more than a plot, not every frame should be taken literally
Sue was always surprised at what a mess Elizabeth had made in a week. Synchronizing memories would not allow you to be surprised, corny because she would remember everything herself.
They have more than one consciousness. Sue may have passed on the background that Elizabeth has accumulated, but otherwise she is a new person (with her own nuances).
And the rest of the film has many moments that refute the thesis with a common consciousness and memory. But I don't want to argue, my own interpretation is always cool.
Again, it's all about Elizabeth's interests. If there is no shared memory, why give up your week of life to a young woman? 🤷♀️
upd: I'm so without negativity, if anything, just the interlocutor from above is very suffocating with canvases
There is one wonderful 1978 film called Theodora. The main point is that an old Hollywood actress impersonates her daughter. Her daughter is basking in the glory and ovation of her mother, but it doesn't matter to Feodora, she practically lives these glorious moments in the same way, even if her daughter is under the spotlight.
I have already argued that the maternal line is traced here, Sue is in fact her daughter. Therefore, Elizabeth, stepping over herself, returned it. Closer to the finale, this is eloquently evidenced by the moment when Elizabeth's grandmother could not fully administer a lethal injection.
About the motorcyclist.. Yes, the grain of doubt has closed, suddenly you are right. But I have just reviewed this moment, and it cannot be unequivocally stated that she recognized the motorcyclist. She fled from the coffee shop in a panic, and when faced with the night yobar, she was in prostration. We, the audience, recognized him, but it cannot be said that Elizabeth recognized him. That's why it doesn't count.
But the reactions of Ali or Sue after waking up to the mess - definitely unequivocally indicate that this situation has become a surprise for them. An unpleasant surprise.
But you noticed the character correctly. In an interview on kinopoisk, the actress who played Sue tells how she thought through the character of her heroine. This proves once again that these are two different people.
I agree with you, the ending is a grotesque art house, a whirlwind of trash and madness on the screen, so to speak, the culmination and punishment of a stupid society that is imposed by the standards of Hollywood beauty.
If you perceive the film as an unrelated mishmash of metaphors, sarcasm and criticism of society, then what are we arguing about)))
Right here on the site above, with another commentator, I mentioned the film "Raw" — there, in addition to the metaphor, there is also an absolutely straightforward plot without art-house scenes. And in "Substance", metaphor simply prevails over the plot of the film — hence all these scenes in the finale, with a guard and a clot of slime on the walk of fame. This is more of an image, but whether it happened literally in the film, in general, it no longer matters.
Okay, I'm glad that at least we didn't fuck up at the end of this dialogue. On this note, I think it will be good to conclude
Especially when they both seem to be alive at the same time, is it possible with one consciousness? If it's one, it can't exist in two bodies at the same time and think differently at the same time, right? Maybe it's related, but Sue is more like a clone to me. She has consciousness up to a certain age at which she appeared. Her skills and character, but she's already like a second person. Another. Although they are connected, they are not exactly one. It's like in science fiction movies, where when the original is killed, the clones die. But a clone can be killed without harming the original. Moreover, they also have the appearance of the original. And here Sue doesn't have the appearance of the main character. She's already a different organism with a different set of genes.
So, the information is from an official source: THEY have THE SAME CONSCIOUSNESS. It's one person, just like the ad said.
But at the same time, the main character develops a mental disorder — a split personality. Another self immediately passed into the younger version, and then Elizabeth's "original" consciousness returns to the old one.
By the way, people have already described this theory in almost medical terms even before the script appeared. And now it's really amazing how accurately they've captured everything.
Yes, we are right, these are two different personalities, everything is correct as you write above, but initially the consciousness is the same)
How the young version woke up in the hall when the original Elizabeth wanted to kill her is a moment of partial transference of consciousness. We were specifically shown that some of the blood had already passed through the tube.
Another interesting detail from the script: it explains why granny was so frisky and didn't die for so long. The thing is that the substance not only grew a clone inside the body, but also strengthened the original organism so that the body could survive the division process at all.
Therefore, you can argue as much as you want and give your own interpretations, but it's already difficult to argue with the original script.
The film script https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25444991-the-substance-read-the-screenplay/
I wonder how many people have so many views. Nevertheless, it was interesting to read all this anyway. :)
And then it's just a search) The most "official" source is now considered to be PDF screenplay, published via DocumentCloud and distributed as part of the awards campaign. He is quoted by Deadline and other film publications)
I hadn't thought about split personality before, but it's also a good clue. I also want to review everything after all the reviews and interpretations that I've seen.
A really beautiful woman (I think she looks gorgeous for 50) gave birth to one who was considered beautiful.
Then the one who was considered beautiful gave birth to a real monster..
Elizabeth was beautiful in body and soul, but this one was just a body.
It turns out that she created the one she wanted and dreamed of being (although in fact she was already her)
And then she killed herself..
It's a great movie. In the end, we came to the beginning.
I ADVISE YOU TO WATCH IT. 🔥
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Seriously, Substance is probably one of the best films of the last two years. I ran through the comments with my eyes, many are dissatisfied with the plot, they say it is too crumpled, unclear, and in general the theme of the film is not disclosed. But the plot, as for me, is of absolutely secondary importance here, and goes rather into the background. The director literally says from the start: "Yes fuck the plot, from the visual at least enjoy it ", piling dudes literally in every scene.
Well, you hardly expect any incredible intricacies from John Wick, because the film is mostly tied exclusively to action. It seems to be the same here. Therefore, it is necessary to enjoy exclusively from camera solutions, from colors and from artistic techniques, and not from narration at all. And it was done quite at the level.
I also understand that many are unhappy with the last 15 minutes of the film and the main barrage of criticism is solely related to this. But here, for once, I will side with the director and say that if it weren't for this "Boo! I was afraid, don't be afraid, it's me Elizabeth. Come here. Come to me. In the end, the film would not have become so memorable, standing in line with some Neon demon, with whom many also drew parallels. In virality and coverage, all means are good, and if there were no such screamer at the end, then the film would not have received so much hype.
In general, I would not recommend the Substance to absolutely everyone, for obvious reasons. But if you love movies and for you it's a little more than just good stories, then you should definitely watch it.
8/10
However, the scene with blood in the bathroom and at the very end is a tin
This is both a scary and funny film that dissects with bloody precision the themes of socially imposed demands on the female body and the pursuit of unfading beauty.
and just like others, I noticed the similarity with "Dorian Gray"
. I really liked the film!
They feel sick, they can't come to their senses for a week)))
The movie is a cannon!! I've never listened to reviews before, and now even more so! 😆
Here we see a beautiful and spectacular woman in the reflection, and she sees herself as a complete disadvantage...
I noticed a lot of allegories that coincided with my guesses, for example, the scene at the beginning with ketchup as a reference to the end of the film (although I knew about the plot at most - 2 minutes of the trailer)
Tsvetokor - wow
Sound accompaniment - wow!
Immerses in the atmosphere
It's amazing how, being in shock and squinting your eyes, a minute later you laugh at the absurdity of what is happening or a stupid sarcastic joke
It reminded me of "Black Swan" in places (especially the ending, some details in the clothes and the final scene, which screamed "I have achieved perfection"
And I did not let go of the feeling of deja vu in relation to the painting "Neon Demon", I noticed the parallelism of the plot and the accents on the colors
I would like to read more, but I got the feeling that the same operator/designer was involved
Should I go or not? I can't answer this question, but I know one thing for sure
It is impossible to remain indifferent
It's like taking care of the audience :)
, in general everything is cool
the idea, the picture, the actors, the music, the references
, but as if they didn't put the squeeze on? the message is somehow too direct, and the million explanations of the little things are not clear what
the whole point is and what everything is going to understand at the beginning, and then they chew it beautifully for another couple of hours
, the reason for shaking and nausea in the audience does not understand
either I am hardened, or the audience is completely with a fine mental organization
in short, well, But it could be more powerful
And as for the subtexts, there are a lot of them, in fact – and all of them are not particularly deep and quite easy to read, but the number of topics covered is impressive. Here is the theme of life on loan at the expense of one's own future, and the influence of the body on consciousness and vice versa, well, plus the most obvious ones that are completely on the surface: about the dictate of artificial standards of beauty (female first of all, of course), about the costs of striving for fame, about the cruelty of the commercial media industry, etc.
Cinema is strongly recommended to viewers who are not confused by the large amount of shock content from the body horror category. It doesn't bother me, I'm used to it.))
When Elizabeth and Sue first (and last) once they see each other awake, with the subsequent clarification of the relationship. Well, this is nonsense! We had been reminded twenty times before that they were one, that they were one person, one consciousness capable of moving between two bodies. But don't be in two at the same time! And there is no point in this scene - in the end it all boils down to the fact that the young version physically kills the old one. Why couldn't it have been done wisely? Well, look, everything is going exactly the same: Elizabeth is going to stop the experiment, but at the last moment she can't bring herself. She wants too much to spend one last time in this young and beautiful body and attend that solemn ceremony on TV. Instead of injecting her with black serum, she makes an extraordinary exchange again. But waking up in Sue's body, he suddenly feels an uncontrollable disgust for Elizabeth's sleeping body - this old, decrepit wreck. And he injects her with a black liquid. Elizabeth dies in the same way, Sue goes to the ball in the same way, and then everything is the same. Only there is no scene of stupid running around the apartment with a beating, and there is no major plot jamb.
However, there is a version that this scene takes place only in the imagination of the heroine, reflecting the degradation of her psyche - but in reality she sees her old body sleeping, as it should be. Well, it also kills a helpless carcass, respectively. Then it is tolerable, in principle.
The visual part of the film is just a tower. There are moments that you can get to, but you just don't want to, because it's so juicy shot. All these very close shots, where the producer eats shrimp, the eyes split, the skin breaks and further down the list, half of the film consisted of similar shots, you want to savor them. Yes, they are vile to some extent, but damn it, it's only because of this that you are ready to look at them over and over again.
And of course the musical accompaniment. This oppressive music, where every kick of the barrel resonates in you. And now it's all so well molded into a single picture. The best part of the film is the music and the visual.
But still a big question for the last act of the film. What was that all about? As if the message is clear. But as if it took too long and it was possible to make the ending a little different. It's just that the whole film was going to be a complete picture, this final act begins and the film itself becomes somehow crooked, awkward and the overall impression is distorted not for the better.
Otherwise, the film is definitely worth watching, if only for the sake of visual and music. But of course you need to have some resistance to all sorts of different scenes, or at least watching enough, so that it's not so disgusting to watch it all.
P.S. I liked how they shaded and emphasized the situation and feelings of the heroine with visual techniques. At least in the beginning. Then it got so hot that I didn't pay attention to it anymore.)
They wrapped it all up in a beautiful picture and a pretentious presentation in the form of a horror body and everything flowed. No, if you liked it, then I have nothing against it. The taste and color of all markers are different. Unfortunately, for myself, I saw nothing but that very picture, banal messages and pretentiousness. Margaret Kuoli is gorgeous yet! 👍
There is something to think about
62 years old (born in 1962). It looks good. Well, Demi is still a millionaire and her appearance is her working tool.
I still remember the admiration of journalists for the figure of Demi Moore in Charlie's Angels 2003. like I was seriously prepared. She was not inferior to the 30-year-old Cameron Diaz. and Demi was 40 years old at the time.
probably on the topic. Leonardo DiCaprio also has a D.R. today. 50th anniversary🥳 he is also known in his personal life for preferring to meet exclusively with models no older than 25 years old. although the current one is already 26😁
they showed how to make a star on the walk of fame. of course, in a simplified cinematic style.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop& ;v=NVSEaDc9Uog (making of a Hollywood star by Top End Terrazzo)
offtop. about the city. the life above the "stars" - the star of Muhammad Ali is one-I hangs on the wall at the request of Ali himself. like not to trample on the name of the prophet.
sometimes, in the comments to the news about the discovery of a star, an elderly celebrity is like "finally. It's so late." I've heard for a long time - to get a star, you need someone to nominate and pay for the installation (usually it's a movie company, etc.). a celebrity can push through the idea and pay (i.e., in fact, "buy" himself a "star"). but many do not bother with this. That's why they get a star so late.
not only the blood / intestines / spread freeze out, but also the super-large plans of individuals. It's already difficult to eat, the ending is trash, fumes and sodomy.
Margaret Qualley is certainly beautiful. no wonder Tarantino filmed it himself. but sometimes there is an understudy - there is no seamless display of her body from face to butt😊
I watched her dancing in the show like those concerned sponsors🤤😛🤣 by the
way, sex fitness was 40 years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7TpSJ1ci0k
Demi Moore is an amazing actress 💔 10/10
But it's fun to watch the short film reality + 2014, it's like the origin of Substance. There are even the same color solutions as in the Substance
How is this even filmed!?!!!
There are meanings, the visual and sound are sticky, the main characters are good, but the delayed timing, endless references and hypertrophied to the finale are superfluous. There was a feeling that all this was not for the sake of the essence, but in order to cause more discussion.
* I went to look at the door handle under "I am the most charming and attractive"
😂 sorry, you can't put a thousand likes
It's okay, you can watch it
For 1 time)
In general, I liked the specifics, it felt like I was watching something from Guillermo del Toro's projects)
Thanks for taking it off. I will never review it again.
And Demi Moore in this picture seems to have her own message, but I hope this is not the case.
I decided to watch it because they were talking about this movie everywhere. But honestly, for once. I didn't really like it, as it turned out, it's not my genre, I don't like that. Well, yes, not everyone watches to the end, it's very disgusting at times.
I wouldn't be surprised if all this becomes a reality in the future.🫠
It's just that when she's in a "new" body, she doesn't care what the consequences are waiting for her, because now she feels so good.
And when she comes back, she is overcome with a feeling of anger at herself for being so irresponsible.
It's about like alcoholics - while they're on a binge, the sea is knee-deep, and in the stage of sobriety - feelings of guilt, shame and sworn assurances that "I'll never do it again."
And after a while, I want to roll over again.
And so on in an endless looping circle - one stage replaces another…
1) Acting. Demi Moore is obviously the queen. A more advanced version of her also played to fame. Everything is very good here.
2) The idea. Simple, but how it is served! It is beautiful and tasteful.
3) Visual. Motley, driving to the point of absurdity. Each frame seems to correspond to the mental state of the heroine. She is young and pretty – everything is very bright. She is an “old woman” again – the colors are gloomy and meager.
4) Music. It doesn't seem to be enough, but it complements everything that happens on the screen well.
I looked at this film as a critique of modern patriarchal society, where a woman in the eyes of men is an object that sooner or later needs to be replaced. Body horror as a genre has never scared me, so all the “body scenes” didn't turn me away from the picture. I spared no time and money. Maybe, when reviewing this work, I will discover many more (or a few) interesting details.
Once again, you need to stop listening to rave reviews.
The whole idea is on the surface, just seasoned with this whole fucking colorful picture, which makes it incredibly bad. I can't watch a movie like that. I need to look at something else urgently to get rid of all this aftertaste. moreover, it does not hurt to wash up in the literal sense.
So, the pros:
• The film is insanely beautiful: the cameraman and the editing are simply above all praise, I wanted to consider every frame.
• The agenda of the film about self-rejection is more relevant than ever. Don't you want to become the best version of yourself? To remove those complexes that, unfortunately, are only in our head.
• It is very well shown how the female body is sexualized, how the "picture" is selected for a TV show
One of the disadvantages is the last 30 minutes of the film. I'm sorry, but what was that? Did you suddenly remember that this is a body horror? Throughout the film, through large shots, we were shown disgusting moments, I think these are decent shots for this genre. Okay, you're showing us the final monster. Who calmly goes to the set with his face glued on and nothing stops her. The shooting begins, with a big star and no one checks if she is on the set, as she has with makeup before the shooting itself. Seriously? What else would you like to add? Oh, let's fill it up with liters of blood, wow.
Total: apart from the strange, chaotic, and for me personally comical ending, the film is worth watching. The idea that you are beautiful in any version of yourself is a must have for today
And "Substance" would only benefit if it were just a satire on ageism, but she persistently looks for the guilty, pedals the theme of animal sexualization of everything that moves, so that she is already sick, thereby almost justifying the gerontophobia of the main character. Add to this a delayed timekeeping and we get... mixed impressions.
At the same time, everything is very stylish and tasteful. The fusion of modernity and the 80s looks just like fire. Demi Moore and Qualley are just indecently good in their roles. Denis Quaid has a separate curtsey. A lot of references and homages in a huge vinaigrette also look wonderfully good. And overall, it's a very good movie. But high expectations still blurred the effect)
"Men force us" — if the heroine had injected a substance to please her lover, then yes, the message would have turned out to be ala "all for the sake of the man". But it was not the man who forced her, but the industry. If you want to be on billboards and magazine covers, you'll inject yourself with Satan's sperm. Read the interview with Michael Keaton and Mark Hamill, where they say that there are no roles for old farts in superheroics, and getting a Vulture or old Luke is a great success. Hollywood is ruthless — it doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman. That's what this movie is about.
Take off the blinders of a fighter against feminism
So you're saying that the industry made her hate herself. Will we not notice the painful need to be in the spotlight? And such a need to bask in the rays of glory to the grave, is it really OK? Maybe sometimes it's worth stopping in time and switching to knitting, because what is natural is not ugly?It is natural not only to grow old, but to accept a new level of opportunities and needs.
Yes, Quaid's character, as the most grotesque character at the helm of the industry, greedily devouring shrimp, shows what this very industry does with waste material. And in general, the message that this showbiz is so cynical - it is expressed. But it is also impossible not to notice that the industry is drawing a penis. Quaid's Persian is a man, shareholders are men who deliberately, again grotesquely, look at tits and asses with dripping saliva. It is the men who sit in the selection committee and joke about boobs instead of a nose for one of the applicants... Well, Camon. This clearly goes beyond "Hollywood is ruthless". This is the message "Lustful men dictate".
Here, in a taxi, a grandfather will arrive at the wheel, how many of the passengers, getting into the salon, let them secretly, but curl their lips? Yes, almost everything. The barber at the barbershop? The waiter at the cafe? Has Hollywood taught everyone to be squeamish about old age? Are the men to blame for everything? )) So Farzha looked at the situation so one-sidedly.
And take off something yourself already, and I'll sit in the blinders.
"the need to bask in the rays of glory to the grave, is it really OK?
And what are you arguing with? Did I say somewhere that it's ok?
Well, tell me about the nurse. Which lustful men dictated to him to take the substance? OK, the industry has a dick. But he's not even in the industry. Or is there a selection committee in the medical field, too, only in lustful women, and looking for young boys?
Or explain the scene with Elizabeth's date. Here's a guy who wants her and is waiting for her, old, not young. Why didn't she go and freak out if it was all for the men in principle? She has male attention. But for some reason, the opinion of men from the industry is more important, mmm
»»Maybe you shouldn't write off everything for age?
Yes, please don't copy it. Am I saying that it's like this for everyone? I gave you these examples because you reduce everything to the problem of gender, but there is none. In the industry, old men and women alike are being scrapped. And who can, stays afloat or plays the role of mothers / grandmothers. But no one is shining like a star anymore.
If you curl your lips at the sight of an old taxi driver, that's your problem, don't speak for everyone) I perceive age as experience. I don't go to barbishops, and I've only seen old waiters in movies in elite restaurants — in ordinary cafes for nischuk it's always young people, and the old man won't work there. So don't make it up. And there is no gender issue in the film, it is about the reluctance to age in principle
And no, I didn't know about the rim, imagine, it happens. Oh, the horror.
I don't fight or expose anyone. You're just screwing up a good movie and picking on points that don't apply to it. This is not misogyny, but the syndrome of looking for an agenda where there is none.
"Imagine, oh horror" — what are you clowning about?) You really didn't know)
I didn't say a word about the subpoena, you've already dragged it to the globe by the ears. I said it was another feminist pamphlet. Your arguments have not convinced me, nor have mine convinced you. I don't quite understand what the point of further sparring is. Who will make fun of whom more for the rim? Well, that's without me.
Imho, she had to finish everything as soon as she realized that she was falling out for a week and was not living that life. What's the joke? An uncovered maternal instinct?
But now I won't be able to perceive Demi Moore normally. Not anymore....
Vile, disgusting, provocative — this is what attracts attention. There will always be talk about vile scenes, about how nasty they are, about how well worked out they are.
As a photographer, I noticed different visual techniques.
A perfectly white bathroom, a uniform red corridor without excess, a monochrome apartment with shades of blue. All this does not give anything superfluous, makes you look only at the key goal!
The shrimp-eating scene is also shown from a nasty point of view. It would seem that shrimps are super, they are delicious to eat, but they are served to us in a disgusting way, we are not up to taste, we are immersed in the world of the weird side of life.
What did I understand for myself in this film? He says that you should not abuse some things in life (for example, health).
And that it is not worth changing yourself for the sake of others, it is worth seeing the good in yourself, because there are no flaws. Someone will say that you have them, and someone on the contrary will praise, it will be difficult to choose who to believe, and you do not need to believe, you need to see yourself, without other people's words that make you doubt yourself.
I recommend it from myself, I liked the movie. But not for the faint of heart, of course.
But it also makes sense. This dude, when he hired Sue, said it was a pity that the shit wasn't on his face, but in the end, for some reason, he wasn't happy about this phenomenon. After all, she had fulfilled what he wanted so much. This once again shows that no matter how much you adjust, no matter how much you please, others don't care enough or everything is wrong/wrong.
While she was flooding the whole hall, she was shouting, "It's me, Lizzie, don't you recognize me, it's me!!";
Implying that she has become a better person, that she has changed herself just to fit in, but she is still being pushed away. Lizzie stopped coming up to them and she became Sue, and when she started falling apart, she moved on, hoping to please them in the best possible way. This should show them that no matter what changes they want, they can only ruin everything and neither they nor she like it.
It's an interesting idea, I don't argue, but there's so much nasty stuff, it's creepy
I have read, watched and heard reviews of what and how it is in it, but so much so
Sometimes I understood gg, but this is in rare cases
in general, if you omit what is happening in the last 30 minutes, then the film is NORMAL. on 7/10. then the kick-ass couple started, schizo + lobotomy + knockouts + New Yorker vibe. a little delayed, I fucked up watching silent scenes and squandered them🙏
briefly plot: the actress has aged and has become no longer a HYPE, by a lucky chance she meets an office that can make a younger, unintelligent clone. in short, like Naruto kage bunshin no jutsu, but they change and another copy is deactivated. the temptation took over, the young clone began to get impudent, well, in short, she almost killed herself) in short. in the last 30 minutes, all that remained of the body was a random generation of organs on the mass called the body, well, that's it) dead)
pros:
+USA production;
+ moderately pleasantly disgusting. not only in terms of the fu monster, but also in terms of moral ugliness.
Bypassing:
- for a long time. 2:20 fucking;
- crazy at the end;
- random parts aka Chekhov's guns that didn't fire in the end.
The overall score is 6.46/10
That's what competent advertising, thoughtful marketing moves and famous actors in the cast mean. In general, the idea is interesting, but somehow dreary and without dynamics to something final. It's as if each fragment has its own understatement. Perhaps if they had promoted this idea and filmed the series, the ratings would have been higher. Perhaps the best thing is Demi Moore's game, I just believed it, everything else seems to be a prop.
In short, 2/3 of the film is 5, 1/3 is 1. Total 3.5.
And Demi Moore is just good…
The moment when she was so desperate that she decided to kill herself, and then remembering the words that she needed so much, they will love you.;, wanted to give "that" life, because she hates herself.... for the living 💔💔💔
I have mixed feelings after viewing
The message is understood, there is a lot of meat, Demi Moore is a beauty
They showed some preoccupied men, not a single normal one😅
For me, the movie is a little bit delayed, well, damn 2 and a half hours is pzdc😄
Apparently, I am already immune to such films)) there was no such disgust, which everyone writes about, it did not make me sick, like many people, because everyone is so gentle, it's just Someone Else's 2024, on the contrary, I laughed, where did so much blood come from? it can be seen that this was the most disgusting moment for everyone.
The monster 2 v1 was interestingly depicted
But in general, the film made me think, although the topic is not new. Beauty does not "require sacrifice," it requires self-love. Elizabeth initially disliked herself, so she was blown away without universal adoration. She looked gorgeous for her age, not everyone looks like that at 50. Or how old she is in the story.
Yes, the audience needs new faces, young blood. It has always been so. The cycle of popularity in nature.
At such moments, you need to look for new meanings to move on, and not worry about the fact that you are not so juicy anymore and every second person does not want to fuck you. Do not envy beauty and a young body. Very infantile thoughts for an adult woman.
She is lonely and lost. With such a case, you need to go to your loved ones or to a psychologist, and not look at all sorts of dubious flash drives 😄
To stoop so low that you even ask a classmate out on a date, finding his number on a piece of paper that was lying in a puddle. Just because he said she was the most beautiful woman in the world.
The lack of self-worth and self-love - alas and ah. And also a statement for wrappers. But it is too exaggerated, of course, it is shown.
Both actresses are super! 🔥
Then the movie search opens and the fun begins. The director and the screenwriter are two in one, a lady with a protracted midlife crisis. Those who are persistent, who in the process did not burn out their eyes and feelings with a penny idea with a frenzied realization to the point of paranoia, fate rewards catharsis. "The Frenchwoman was inspired by her own life experience. All her life, she felt like she wasn't good enough. Over the years, the demands and dislike of oneself and one's appearance only intensified, and after 40 years there was a feeling that life was about to end." That's it. Otherwise, it seemed to me that the author's obsession with the topic of objectification would not only surpass it for all the archetypes pinned by art from the plot taken together, but also drown it. It turned out that he hadn't imagined it. Why is there so much attention to how you look, what stage of your life you are at, and how others perceive you? And why are they doing this supposedly only (!) by the standard of conventional beauty? The plot is responsible — she told about the origin of the plot, there was still elaboration and presentation. And they wouldn't survive the first question in a literature lesson in any classroom at any school if they were there.
What am I talking about. OK, fine. You're not pretty and you have a complex. But surely life in society is not confined to a camera, a motor and a swimsuit? The heroine has no job where she would sell anything other than her face and achievements in the cinema a century ago (she is also losing this place), no friends, no family, no interests, no occupations. The author has no ideas, no abilities, no skills, just a burning desire to poke other people's noses into shit and body horror.
In the material about the film, under euphemisms like "references", ideas and visual images are carefully filed, which Madame has written wherever it was not nailed (or was). And that's literally everything in her painting. Indeed, with such introductory questions, where can we get self-esteem and self-worth?..
And the climax is more magnificent in life than in the movie. For her efforts, Comrade Coralie Farja received not subscriptions to a psychologist and a rocking chair, but ... recognition in Cannes. The curtain! 4/10 — I laughed in a couple of scenes.
I also have questions about this film, but on the other hand: we have seen many films about the midlife crisis in men, it is interesting to look at this stage from the women's side)
An aunt has been jumping on a fitness show for thirty years and all of a sudden, for no reason or reason, out of the blue, her ass in compression tights gets off her knee and is replaced by a more suitable one for this airtime) And just as suddenly, it turns out that there are no other aspects in her life (she probably draws on microloans from paycheck to paycheck). Plak-plak)
From what comes to mind offhand and touches on the female midlife crisis, perhaps "Beef". But everything is so great there, both with the author's team and with the characters, that it's even a little awkward to mention "Substances" in the branch)
I've always been attracted to horror movies.
The form is clearly more important than the content. What matters is not how Sue was able to arrange a hiding place in the bathroom. The important thing is that the young version hides the old self in the farthest dark place and then even covers it with a sheet, avoiding any casual glance.
It is also interesting that Elizabeth's apartment towers over the city, but she has to go down for the substance.
Or the confrontation between Elizabeth and Sue. She is constantly reminded that there is no her, you are one. It's a metaphorical struggle within one person. Sue hates her wrinkled old self, she wants to live life to the fullest again. Elizabeth envies this young elastic version of herself, who can have fun and catch admiring glances. The conflict is understandable, there is no bipolar disorder, as many say.
It's a bit strange that the film got the award for the script. It seemed to me that many scenes needlessly duplicate themselves.
We are shown twice that Elizabeth was fired because of her age. For some reason, we spent time with a doctor who also uses the substance. The final act is redundant. That phrase again "it's a pity she doesn't have boobs on her face". Thanks, too blunt.
And yet it's unclear why Elizabeth agreed to the substance in the first place. She threw away the flash drive, and then just took it out. Why? Nothing happened in between to change her mind.
However, the movie, as I said...unusual. Unpleasant, uncomfortable, and sometimes disgusting in the most ordinary scenes. It's not like it provides a lot of food for thought...although there is still something to think about. At least about whether it was worth it?
The question is, of course, rhetorical.
The movie "The Wedding Vase" is much deeper and more thoughtful than this donkey puking.
The idea is interesting, shot much better than smiles 2. but two and a half hours, of course, too much. Like now bodychorroras have become slowberners. I was amazed at how the heroine herself immediately figured out how and what to do. For me, there are clearly not enough instructions in the package. I didn't understand the topic of food at all, because I didn't notice that gluttony somehow reflected on the young one. Here it would be better to play the topic of pregnancy.
It is still not clear, if they are one, why they behave as if everyone lives their own life and learns about the other's life from the remaining traces? If there is no switching, the grandmother lives for 7 days, then gets up with pain after unconsciousness and lives for another 7 days. It doesn't make sense. If there is a switch and it's the same woman, then why does she look like she doesn't remember what she did? And the process of interruption in everyone takes place in such a way that the young body becomes more stable? I would also like to know about the other participants of the program.
Another point caught Moore not liking his body in the beginning. But if you compare it with our sixty-year-old grandmothers, with varicose veins, old spots. wrinkles, gray hair, that would be something to be sad about. Ideally, it was necessary to start immediately with such a body, but then it would not be possible to show the consequences of delaying switching.
The owner of the company played smartly. Such a rotten character.
I also watched parts of it, I thought it was the worst in the middle, but I watched it through to the end after a while...There was pure nervous laughter out loud from each subsequent frame
The most annoying thing about this movie is the constantly repeating brown sound. Slotting from the library "Shock sounds for Cinema" never ends here. Of the sickening things, we can safely note the torn gluing and editing, as if it were not a movie, but a music video.
The plot is a series of black mirrors (in a bad way. This is a typical school-level parable that lasts a criminal 2.5 hours)
Acting is difficult to evaluate, because it is 90% grotesque, and it is easier to play it than to imitate sincere emotions.
Are you scared? No. Is it disgusting? Well, here the body horror level is about like in the animated series Rick and Morty. Decide for yourself
I think I'll review it as soon as I forget it. The main thing is not to forget to turn off the movie after the monster gets out of Sue.
The film is gorgeous in a way, the special effects are bombastic. I just wish there was less trash at the end.
And an Oscar for both actresses, and of course for the special effects.
It would be a kind of message, the pursuit of beauty and youth, turns into a monster.
The film is, of course, super unpleasant, after all, body horror is not my thing.
Perhaps an amateur, I don't know who likes to look at the outright senseless fountains of blood that have nothing to do even with reality.. Well, it's clear that it's fiction, but there are many moments that hurt the eye.
The most cheerful grandmother in the world was just falling off her feet out of the blue, and then let's run and carry heavy things. Uh.
Overall, the film is not bad, very good. I wouldn't say it's disgusting, it's quite watchable, without vomiting. Watching Quaid eat shrimp was more unpleasant than watching the gnarled monsters.)
Grotesque in everything and as it is, we love it.
I didn't expect such trash, the ending killed me.
They don't know what to come up with anymore
Both actresses performed well. Demi Moore is even too good.
There are no questions about the first half of the film, but there are questions about the second half. It seemed to say that they were one, but either Elizabeth's split personality was based on the same separation, such as an alter ego, or Sue is really a completely different person. The man's insistent words on the phone hinted that she could control the actions of both, so it turns out that this is precisely a split personality. Besides, I readily believe that Sue acted exactly as Elizabeth would have done. The scene of Elizabeth's beating was very impressive, but it also seemed to be exaggerated, especially with the excessive amount of blood, given that the whole film before that looks quite naturalistic.
Ugly Elizabeth and Elizabeth turned out to be really impressive and frightening, although Sue, of course, was the most frightening.
The fact that men are all disgusting here didn't seem exaggerated to me (well, maybe a bunch of grandfathers at the end), because there aren't many of them here anyway, and in general, it seems that in America such types are very real.
But still, the film is an art house. It's not bad or good, he's just like that. The sex-centric nature of what happens every week quickly bores Sue and loses its effect by the middle of the film. Bright, brilliant, loud, the picture is cool, but meaningless. And not to say that it is interesting. While Elizabeth's weeks are filled with despair and the horror of realisation. Sue herself looks like a pretty empty character compared to Elizabeth, but I think that's how it was intended.
Here are the horror moments (except the ending..what it was) good. From the design of the substance, the creation-preservation-change system, to the idea of a spine, spots and dying body parts, due to the growing reluctance to transfer the change.
Overall, the film is 3.5/5 for cinematography and a plot with increasing anxiety, but a third of the timekeeping was shown to be banally superfluous, and the ending was crumpled.
PS But definitely respect for the trigger to thoughts about the value of youth, with the accompanying note that appreciating growing up and aging is just as important, since this process is irreversible and it is important to accept anyone.
The film's strong point is its originality and desire to address important issues.: what we are willing to give for the illusion of an ideal, and how far the entertainment industry is willing to go in pursuit of ratings and profits. The acting is excellent, and the visuals are impressive with their ingenuity and skill. However, the film is excessively naturalistic and grotesque, sometimes crossing the line of reason and slipping into shock for shock's sake.
This is not to say that “Substance” is an easy movie. The film evokes strong emotions, but not always pleasant ones. It requires the viewer to be prepared and prepared for an unusual film language. If you are looking for a movie that will make you think, but you are not afraid of explicit scenes and unusual plot twists, “Substance" may well interest you. In general, the film leaves behind contradictory feelings: on the one hand, admiration for the courage of the creators, on the other – bewilderment at excessive cruelty. The rating is 3.5 out of 5.
Even considering that I love the beauty of a woman's body and beautiful breasts, there were a lot of boobs here, too many scary, creepy, disgusting boobs... 🤢
Overall, it's a pity. It's sad that she couldn't stop right away when she noticed the changes with her finger and realized that it was irreversible.
An adult, beautiful woman who heard "no" from one ultimate businessman and decided to give up on herself after that... 🤦🏻♀️ Well, at least I would try to find another job, arrange a personal life, or just go on vacation.
You can take a look at it once. Although the taste of a certain kind of sur prevented me from getting into and admiring this picture to the fullest, as some viewers managed to do.
the movie didn't catch on, I expected more from it
Well, you can also take a look at a similar theme: Wedding Vase, Furiosa, Captain Marvel 1,2," " Madame Cobweb", "Ghostbusters", "Men in Black 4", " La commune (Paris, 1871)", " Living in Despair", "Pink Flamingo"
Well, or at least the Black Swan or Dorian Gray or Mr. Nobody.;
It was a disappointment, a couple of funny moments for 2.5 hours, at least the topic of boobs was revealed, 5-6 out of 10 maximum
What I liked about the film were some juicy shots, interesting camera angles, and frame changes. It was as if the editor and the cameraman had been given full carte blanche, and they had come off and tried all sorts of cool tricks. but this also led to an incredible delay. I want to shorten every second scene and remove every third one.
Metaphors and allegories should be the icing on the cake, not the main course. I kind of understand about continuity, generational change, sacrifice, but at the same time, the main story should be collapsible and consistent, even with some rules of a fictional world. So that's why the main character keeps changing if she doesn't remember or feel the memories and emotions of the copy? she just goes out for a few days, and then comes back. She doesn't live another life. and it was this that became the second significant unpleasant moment (the first was the delay).
Well, the third point, although not very important, the beginning was painfully reminiscent of Lucy's movie with its chewing of metaphors. It was infuriating.
in principle, I enjoyed watching it, the film is far from the worst, but the listed disadvantages will not allow me to return to it to review.
The film makes you think about a lot. But at the same time, it is also a cruel satire and a parody of Hollywood and Hollywood bonzes. The ending turns into a crinkly thrash and it slightly blurs the impression of the film.
Demi Moore is just great to have decided on a role in such a movie. And she played great.
and people idolize it...
It feels like the concept of the film changed dramatically the moment Moore didn't go on a date. It would be much more interesting if they retained a single consciousness — and it gradually, through real experiences, for example, falling in love and finding a new meaning for life in "old age", began to change, adapting to a young body that is becoming more popular and in demand. This would create internal tension and a really strong conflict.
But instead, the film slipped into something resembling the "Sinister Dead" — with grotesque, ridiculous horror films and artificial "tin". Although I usually can't even look at a drop of blood, everything here looked so fake that it didn't cause any reaction. I watched the last part on rewind — there were no deep dialogues, no clear conflict, no meaning left.
I am very, very sorry for the flawed concept.
According to the picture, these are Kubrick and Cronenberg in places.
Moore's body is like candy at her age.
I expected more from the film, but 2+ hours flew by quite unnoticed)
Quaid is playing a nasty guy right now)
And of course, I didn't see anything new on the screen, I already saw all this during the VHS
I usually don't really understand the hidden meanings embedded in the plots of such art houses, but everything is very accessible here) The horrors of the consequences of using the substance are very effectively shown, the latter image causes goosebumps and disgust. At the same time, there are a lot of comedy moments)
A separate plus for the swing track and the most memorable main phrase of the film)
I turned off the movie after the drug injection scene, it was a bit boring before that, but I found it just disgusting and pointless. Maybe he just couldn't stand it, but it's unclear what the point of this organization is, they didn't show the money whether she transferred it to them or not, damn, she even wrote the phone number on her hand, not in a notebook)) Past me, in a word.
5/5
1. Thirst for fame (TV, video blogging).
2. The development of dependence on the use of mood-altering chemicals (including prohibited substances).
3. The development of a split personality or the development of another serious mental disorder. I remembered the movie "Split" in 2016.
The realism of the film is added by the fact that the main role is played by a real former movie star with a model appearance.
I couldn't wait to check out the movie starring Demi Moore, which made so much noise, was given a standing ovation, and even won the Best Screenplay award at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
I usually always read reviews before a movie or a TV series, I'm not afraid of spoilers and the disclosure of some plot secrets, BUT here I didn't even read the reviews specifically, I wanted to see everything with my own eyes and experience my own feelings, independent of outside opinions.
While I was collecting my thoughts, I was in anticipation of something unusual, and now I can say that my expectations did not let me down.
I write hot on my heels, I feel like a bowl overflowing with emotions, I'm afraid to even move, so as not to spill them and not lose sight of something important.
The film made a lot of impressions: I didn't know what to do, laugh, spit, squint and get scared, or cry! My bulging eyes almost fell out at the moment when the young woman began to destroy the "beautiful" version of herself.
Even my husband was stunned, spat on the TV and ran into another room so as not to interfere with my enjoyment of this creation.
The running time of the film is impressive - 2 hours and 21 minutes, but for me the time flew by unnoticed, I just swallowed it in one go.
I was captivated by the film from the very beginning, and I watched most of it without stopping, catching every movement, fearing to miss something and having great pleasure, until it came to the finale, which was not without a fly in the ointment.
I have a separate respect for the quality of the shooting. Some nasty moments really make you shudder. Even all sorts of little things like a close-up of a face, a shrimp devouring by a producer and a fly in his glass, a note falling into a puddle, are not only coolly and humorously noticed, but also so toxically presented that it is simply impossible not to be disgusted!
And how beautiful Demi Moore is here! Here she surpassed herself, and this is, in my opinion, her second best role after "Ghost."
Friends, the movie is really cool, I have the highest score and strong recommendations for fans to tickle their nerves!
And of course, it was all predictable that they would "split up" and the young one would want to do as she did.
The only question is where Elizabeth got the "grandmother's clothes" in the form of "that skirt" and knee socks that grandmothers usually wear))
The last half hour looks so-so ...
Well, again, the 12/22 joint is a single one))
The description notes that the film is "feminist", but as for me it is absolutely "misogynistic". Honestly, I didn't see the lesson here that we should accept ourselves as we are - with all our shortcomings, aging and general shortcomings. All the same, the impression remains that most will not even notice if a person disappears after his "prime"has passed…
I understand that Elizabeth's classmate was probably introduced to show that it was only in her head that she was no longer like that, but still the film has a very contradictory meaning, for my taste.
So, the film itself responded to me with a bias towards psychology and the difficulty of accepting oneself, one's changes and one's age. And from this point of view, it seems to me that the actresses just did an amazing job, if that was the main goal)) I give the movie a 5/5, even though I didn't understand the ending at all, and this strange monster with a t*t. How was she allowed on stage in the first place and why didn 't anyone see 🤔

A great example of how, in pursuit of success, beauty, fame, and lost youth, people are ready for anything, even if it leads to tragic consequences for someone. The topic of body modification and enhancement overlaps with what women and some men are willing to do in the real world.
Everyone has their own way, but I would not wish for anyone to resort to such methods of rejuvenation or even think about plastic surgery.
The only thing I still have questions about is how exactly their consciousness is divided and memory works, if each of them remembers common things, but does not remember what the previous version did. And the finale, in my opinion, is delayed.
I would watch a version of this story where the two heroines follow the rules and team up to ruin the owner of the show.:D but it would be a different genre.
