what I'll mark after watching:
the plot is eerily banal: rich white men are looking for ways to cash in, but there is a beautiful virgin, pure of soul, who does not like such a plan.
I have a little bit of watching, but I guessed the whole plot from the beginning to the end, all the twists, nothing surprised me.
there are also advantages, the director's work, the shots are juicy, unicorns are a separate respect! good acting, once again you want to interact with them and scream "wrong way!", "run!", it's important to me, it means you're hooked
I rate the movie 3/5 - I can't put more than that, I recommend watching it in the background, immersion is not required
And we tried to do something funny and unusual, and we also got a good cast.
This is a stylish old-school black comedy that reeks of similar films from the 90s. the actors themselves are really pulling the movie. The game and the chemistry between them turned out great.
the plot shows the themes of family values and the principles of morality of the characters themselves, and besides, there is a good satire on the rich.
Unicorns are high, I would like to see more of them, but come on.
If you don't overestimate your expectations, you can easily spend time watching.
They may not always succeed, but they try and sometimes surprise you very much.
Unicorns with fluffy dragon faces and sounds are the best thing about this movie.
Despite the stubbornness and predictability of the plot, it leaves an aftertaste of magic and justice, there is something in it.
As trash it would fit, as horror it is very strained, although infernal unicorns are nothing like that.
For some reason, there are attempts at satire, but here everything is quite thin and banal.
In the end, there's a lot of snot about family values, although in this regard the film is even worse than horror and satire. I still don't understand why the horned ones didn't take revenge on the father, who not only knocked down the child, but also smashed his head, and then went to hunt the elders out of the most selfish motives. And then he was rewarded for it.
The cast is good, Ortega is good, but otherwise it's a waste of resources, where there wasn't even a reasonable script behind a decent director.
PS. A cheap move with a stolen motion detector sound from Someone Else's.
It's quite suitable for a one-time look. Cute unicorns nervously drinking in their corner 😄
Despite the fact that the film was released by Studio A24, it is worth reducing expectations before watching. This is a straightforward slasher, where deliberately caricatured rich people get what they deserve from those they want to cash in on. The best thing about the film is the homerically funny Will Poulter, who partly recalled the sketches of the silly image from "We are the Millers." It's equally funny to see the crazy contrast of his roles in the range of one month ("Under Fire"). The film itself offers not so much food for the mind as a dose of fast dopamine. This is also prompted by the fast editing, which jumps from one storyline to another, realizing that any opportunity to stop will reveal the excessive simplicity of the film.
An original black comedy, with dry and funny humor, where unicorns disembowel people. When creating this absurd plot, the authors were definitely smoking something, but clearly with knowledge of the matter.
For me, the only advantages are caste and satire on the greed of people who already need little.
Otherwise, the film is set to background or speed 1.5. The jokes are not funny. Unicorns are the killers of kringe.
But if you liked the theme of the cure for all diseases and the desire to take possession of it, then I recommend watching the animated series "Common side effects". I liked it more than what I just watched)
It's even unexpected somehow) For the most part, I thought it would be so-so..
Unicorns certainly turned out well, you can't say anything.
You can see that they are so powerful and strong, and most importantly that they are loving parents 💖🦄
The film is hilarious in its helplessness. Not only is this another satire about stupid, greedy rich people who are also pharmacists, but they have long had a separate cauldron in hell in popular culture. Besides, the authors haven't decided what they're shooting at all.
All the time watching, associations appeared with other films: with dubious comedies from the noughties, with Cameron's "Aliens", which is even funny, with thrash horrors about Winnie the Pooh and so on. But not once, not even once (!) did I even have thoughts like, "Oh, something new, I've never seen this before."
He adds a special twist that the film feels terribly slow, and the absolutely empty, uninteresting dialogues only make it worse. I am more than sure that somewhere in the dungeons of Hollywood there is a tutorial "Dialogues for your slasher". I was just checking to see how this misunderstanding would end. And just as I was glad that at least the ending would turn out to be unexpectedly funny, they managed to spoil it with some kind of semi-comedic, semi-sweet, under-happy ending.
Not a single successful joke, not a single frightening or even creepy moment, not a single character that you want to worry about or at least believe in. What was I hoping for?
P.S. Although no, I still want to believe in one character, because he is the only adequate one there - this is Griff. A local variation of Nardole from DW. She's just as bald, just as cool (well, almost), and just as sane in shitty situations. It's not a sin to throw half a point just for him.
Lawyer Elliot Kintner (Paul Rudd) with his teenage daughter Ridley (Jenna Ortega) goes to the estate of the Leopold family, for whose company he works. On the way, dad and daughter get distracted and shoot down not just any moose or deer, but a whole unicorn. Elliot decides to finish off the unknown animal, saving it from agony, and hides it in the trunk of a car. However, there is no way to cancel an important business meeting, however, as well as to hide the unicorn's body for a long time from the Leopolds, who are looking for benefits everywhere.
"Death of a Unicorn" is the directorial debut project by Alex Sharfman, who has been producing horror films for a couple of decades. The recent "Trophy House" - in case anyone saw it - was his handiwork. The man got tired of standing on the sidelines, and with the support of Studio A24, known to all independents, as well as Ari Astaire himself ("Solstice", "Reincarnation"), he made a film based on his own idea. Moreover, Sharfman first had the concept of "Someone knocked down a unicorn" and for a long time he did not know what to do with it, and then decided to put the plot in the horror subgenre "monster movie".
Usually, the first attempts at creativity - be it films, books, etc. - come down to one of two results. Or they are redundant: there are too many things mixed up in them, because the creator has been accumulating all sorts of different things for a long time and now sublimates everything at once. Or, on the contrary, they are scarce, because the author is still not confident enough in himself and is afraid to take an extra step to the side.
The "Death of a Unicorn" is like both at the same time. In its current form, it can be miserably cut and fit into the frame of a short film. However, Sharfman lacks the skills to adequately stretch the story and fill it with a sufficient number of interesting characters and events. Moreover, the further away from the plot, the film becomes less and less complete, crumbling into strange and not very appropriate homages either towards "Aliens" (up to the sounds of the local motion sensor beeping and quoting scenes from there a la Marines preparing to hunt xenomorphs), or towards "Jurassic Park period" (as if he has few heirs trying to repeat his success even without the "Death of the Unicorn").
However, the first third of the picture looks quite promising. Take, for example, the black opening scene in which Rudd slaughters a unicorn with improvised means. Or the Leopold family itself with their servants, who are ready to do absolutely anything to get the most out of a downed unicorn and possessing its magical abilities. The son of Leopold is especially good (he was wonderfully played by Will Poulter from "We are the Millers", "Solstice", "Black Mirror: Brandashmyg").
But by the middle, it turns out that the author doesn't really have anything to say, except for a rather obvious anti-capitalist social commentary that has become a nuisance in this subgenre of horror films. We've all seen it in the person of John Hammond and InGen at the Park./Jurassic World" or the representative of the company "Weyland-Yutani" Carter Burke from "Aliens". We all know about the 1%, that capitalism is evil, and so on and so forth. And there would be some bright local heroes and antiheroes, but no. Jenna Ortega plays a typical teenager and, in general, any of her roles before that were more voluminous and elaborate. Paul Rudd is too serious in the frame - damn it, this is not an Oscar-winning drama, you can relax and mess around in the frame. Leopold's father and mother are not frostbitten enough, although they are not played by newcomers to the comedy Richard E. Grant and Thea Leoni. From beginning to end, the only thing that pleases is Will Poulter, both as an actor and as an antagonist. He was the only one who was a constant source of funny remarks and situations. Okay, it's not entirely true - Anthony Carrigan (the bald guy from the HBO series "Barry") also performed well in a cameo role, but there was very little of him, although he certainly decorated the frame.
As for the unicorns themselves, the design of the adults is, in my opinion, quite controversial (and kind of dirty). This is a mythical - moreover, a fabulous creature. There must be grace, grace, and beauty in him. So that their cruelty and bloodthirstiness stand in stark contrast to our ideas about them. And here came a parody of velociraptors from a second-rate horror movie. Yes, the motivation (yeah, imagine) of unicorns is normal, but not the appearance. That the episode of "Supernatural", that "Cabin in the Woods" at one time managed to better show the infernal unicorns. And the methods of killing here are quite monotonous.
Returning to two types of debuts: Alex Sharfman seemed to swing at the ruble in several directions at once, and eventually hit a penny in comedy, horror, drama, and social satire, barely touching on each of these sides. With such a weak coverage, there is no overload, but there is not enough integrity. In my opinion, it was necessary to turn on the maximum stupidity, or at the end go deep into the drama. However, maybe Sharfman will be better prepared next time. Or he will return to the producers again and will not interfere with other promising colleagues.
Rating: 5 Sacred Deer kills
And where to laugh or be afraid or make fun of the rich?? Generally, satire has no root or filling. And Will Poulter was only a little pleased with the cast, who, as my friend put it, plays all kinds of fools perfectly (only in a rough form) and everyone in the picture is stupid, but only he pulls this strap, the rest are just not impressive. And it turns out Ortega is an extra element here, and unfortunately she probably thought that A24 was a trend and it would pull her to a steep level, but it sank her a little in a series of failures, Tim Burton save.
The cook/doorman was amused by his discretion in closing doors and windows. In general, there is nothing more to say.
