Overview

Jerry Welbach, a reluctant bagman, has been given two ultimatums: The first is from his mob boss to travel to Mexico and retrieve a priceless antique pistol, known as "the Mexican"... or suffer the consequences. The second is from his girlfriend Samantha to end his association with the mob. Jerry figures alive and in trouble with Samantha is better than the more permanent alternative, so he heads south of the border.

A vivid example of how the genres of black comedy, crime drama and road adventure can be successfully combined in one work. Director Gore Verbinski (later known for "Pirates of the Caribbean") created an unconventional, ironic and sometimes absurd story that keeps you in suspense until the very end, despite the apparent carelessness of the plot.
This is a film that defies easy classification. It is not for those who are looking for a clear plot or ideal characters, but it is ideal for connoisseurs of unusual stories with a touch of absurdity, spiritual depth and a good share of black humor. Two decades after its release, it still remains fresh, original and worthy of attention.
