Director Martin Campbell left his mark on the history of the avenger Zorro by making the 1998 film Mask of Zorro, in which the hero's cloak and mask passed from aristocrat Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins) to his protege Alejandro Muriete (Antonio Banderas).
Now the director says that he would like to complete this storyline in the third film and hopes that Antonio Banderas will agree to try on this image again. "Absolutely. He's amazing. He was very comfortable to work with. I shot a sequel to this movie, which wasn't exactly successful, but still I know he did amazing things. He was perfect (Zorro). When he replaces Anthony Hopkins' character, a new hero is born. It's really a perfect circle, isn't it?" commented Martin Campbell.
Is Antonio Banderas ready to play Zorro again?
The actor previously said that he would like to repeat the fate of Anthony Hopkins' character in order to give the hat and mask of Zorro to a new actor in a potential third film. "I would consider this possibility, why not? If I were invited to star in the next Zorro, I would do what Anthony Hopkins did for me, which is pass the baton," he stated.
In 1998, the film The Mask of Zorro, executive produced by Steven Spielberg through his company Amblin Entertainment, grossed $250 million worldwide. Later, Martin Campbell successfully rebooted another iconic character, James Bond, in Casino Royale 2006.
