@niayzovazyra: I've been reading for a long time, I might be confused, but the book didn't seem to have such an emphasis on the long-standing feelings of the characters. There was no bar scene where Rachel admits that she loved Dex in college. And the scenes where Rachel says they're just friends and Dex disappointedly asks Darcy out, too. It just mentions that he liked Rachel in college, but she was focused on her studies, didn't date guys, and he didn't dare ask her out. And Rachel's self-esteem was below the baseboard (thanks to Darcy, among other things) and she couldn't imagine that he could like her. I had more questions about Rachel and Darcy's friendship in the book, it describes in detail how Darcy constantly asserted herself at her friend's expense, so I didn't really understand why Rachel was friends with her at all. But she kept repeating like a mantra that they were almost sisters and tolerated some kind of codependent relationship. And it was only the affair with Dex that allowed her to finally put herself first in life. There is much less comedy in the book than in the film, such a melodrama is more likely, but there are questions about the adequacy of the characters there)

@AnneEl: well, probably because for Rachel, Darcy was the only friend and she held on to her in any situation, especially when she repeated so much about love and sisterhood that Rachel probably believed in it herself without thinking about what it looked like from the other side) and so, in fact, Ethan saw it all, understood it, and tried to convey it, but he couldn't ((
