Still remains a favorite movie. And although there have been empty rumors about a sequel for many years, I continue to hope for nothing that it will be.

A very publicized film... there is no beautiful love story here (and there is no love as such), after reading the book after the film, I finally understood it

@Mr_Shipper: exactly. If Elio had been a girl, Oliver would have been spat at, wished him dead, and whoever they called him. But if both partners are of the same sex, you can enthusiastically read about any trash and call it a masterpiece.

@id440426744: well, as if that's the point, that a same-sex couple, and it has its own specifics, which will never be in a heterosexual one. Well, in the foreseeable future

@Lionette: Wow... Using a young boy for sex, then the most painful parting with him is its own specifics, which will never be in a heterosexual couple.? Deception, abuse and betrayal exist in all kinds of couples. But if both members of the couple are sexually attractive men, then brainless yaoyschitsy will forgive any shit they do. If Elio was a girl, you would brand him an idiot, and Oliver a moral freak and an abuser. But when gay fetishism comes into play, you can forgive everything.

@id440426744: No. It's just that if Elio was a girl, they would have had the opportunity to stay together. Which was unrealistic due to the fact that they are of the same sex.

@Makswood: Everything is quite real, it was just unnecessary for someone. Same-sex love has always been and has been everywhere. People found the opportunity to be together if they were not afraid of the consequences (just the same strong and sincere love). Immediately, Oliver said at the end on the phone "My father would have sent me to a correctional institution "., and before that, talking about the wedding, he said that it had been going on for at least two years with varying success. He was having fun on summer vacation.

I watched this movie twice. It seems that there is nothing masterpiece in it, but the game of Timothy Chalamet attracts (I first learned about it in this film). I was very upset that there would be no second part. And all because of the charge against Armie Hammer. Although if Timothy is still playing Elio, I would love to see Oliver's roles even as a second actor, if the sequel was still decided to be removed.

I really like the atmosphere of summer in this movie. bright streets of Italy, beautiful landscapes and summer vibe. This is my first movie that I watched with Timothy Chalamet!! his game won me over... remember the fireplace scene at the end? I cried with him!! special thanks should be said about the soundtracks🥰

He deserves his four. Atmospheric, summer, I still listen to the music from it. It's kind of warm to remember him, although I don't want to revise it.
The book is better for me because of the ending that was cut out here

— You are smart enough to understand how rare, how special was what you had. "Because it was him, because it was me." There was something between you that had nothing to do with the mind at all.

Maybe now you don't want to feel anything, maybe you never wanted to...but one way or another, you still feel. We tear so much away from ourselves in order to forget and heal as soon as possible, that by the age of thirty there is nothing left of us. And every time we start a new relationship, we can give our partner less. But to suppress your feelings so as not to feel anything… This is such an omission.

How you live your life is your business. But please remember, our hearts and bodies are given to us only once. And before you realize it, your heart will wear out, as will your body. One day, no one will want to look at him, much less be around. Now you feel sorrow and pain. Do not kill them, because at the same time you will lose the joy that you felt.

@bellqueen: just for the sake of this monologue of my father, it's worth watching a movie.
This monologue is after you in the very hearts. I wish I'd been told anything like that when I was 15

"is there anything you don't know?"
"I don't know anything, Oliver. I don't know anything about what's really important.
- and what is important?
- you know what.

my opinion has changed dramatically after the first viewing of the film; now, having reviewed the film after more than 5 years, I can safely say:

this film is important and needs to be watched carefully in order to feel and understand that this is not just a film about a naive fool boy who was divorced by an adult uncle for lack of communication. it's about the first love: the one that inspires you and makes you feel everything hyperbolized; the one to which you give yourself completely and unconditionally. this love, initially doomed to failure, mercilessly beats and cuts, radically changes your whole life and sits somewhere deep in your heart. as Elio's father rightly pointed out: "you can give less to every new partner." but you will never be able to compensate for all these emotions you have experienced, because in your life you are unlikely to be able to feel something so vividly and deeply: "the pain that you feel... don't kill her. after all, this way you will kill all the joy that you have experienced."

"is it better to talk or die?"
"your silence is killing me"

Oliver avoids Elio, tries to keep his distance, then rather quickly and carefully quenches the curiosity and unrestrained feelings of the acutely sensitive teenager with a kiss and asks him to stop. he feels sympathy and love for Elio, as well as his sympathy for him, but there is a struggle in his head: he understands that these feelings are wrong. a whole snowball of factors develops on them: the age difference, the same sex, the distance separating them, completely different lives. but you can't order the heart, after a thousand tosses and doubts, he still allows himself to dive into these feelings with his head and forget himself at least for one night. but they both realize that this all has an end, a very imminent and inevitable end. the lines that perfectly describe the situation are: "it's better to lose love than not to know feelings at all." most people would not adhere to this principle, they cling too much to longevity, forgetting to be in a moment that you can live and enjoy enough of it, even if pain follows. but by avoiding this, they will experience nothing but regret for the missed opportunity. "but to force yourself not to feel anything - what a loss!".

I really liked the parallel that I noticed when re-viewing: at the stage of the origin of their feelings, Elio carelessly threw the phrase, rather jokingly, out of context: "you will kill me if you do this." this love really became a deadly poison for them, because this phrase was necessarily followed by "you will kill me if you stop."

the whole picture can be broken down into wise and profound quotes; words that are really important to know and remember in your life. a warm and cozy atmosphere of summer somewhere in northern Italy; a calm, soothing and at the same time heart-rending soundtrack; all the little things and details that complement the picture so perfectly, reflecting Elio's feelings. all of this has definitely left a mark on my heart.

"we have known the stars with you: you and me. this happens only once in a lifetime."

"but if you remember everything, and if you are the same as me, then before you leave tomorrow or when you are ready to slam the taxi door, there will no longer be any understatement in this life at all, then - at least this time, even if in jest, let it will be too late for that — but turn to me, look at me like when we were together, and it meant everything to me, hold my gaze and call me by your name."

Было скучновато и в целом не понял ощущения героя, думал может твист какой-то будет в конце, а может я никогда не любил никого по настоящему. Но монолог в конце фильма шедевральный, конечно

We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster than we should that we go bankrupt by the age of thirty and have less to offer each time we start with someone new. But to make yourself feel nothing so as not to feel anything - what a waste!

The comments say that there is a second part.
Having found out what was filmed based on the book and having read the summary on Wikipedia, I want to say that it's better to have an ending like in the movie..

Yes, the first unhappy love, betrayal, yes.. but it's better to go through this at 17 than to meet and part for the rest of your days, depriving yourself of the opportunity to fall in love again. To love the person who chose you, and not to suffer for the one who ran away..
