A good movie, I expected less.

I didn't like the ending, and that Japan was shown a little, and now it's completely stamped things.

In a good way, a sad film about simple things. Boredom, inner loneliness, a feeling of swampiness and routine — and a small ray in the form of a pleasant affair, which must go out in order for a person to return back to his life. Which also once shone, but boredom is a voluntary matter, and if a person himself cannot overcome this boredom, then others only become plantain.

I really liked the movie. The atmosphere of Japan, and those very moments when the main characters listened to Japanese speech, but understood little, if anything at all. This is the logical ending that should have been. It's like a seasonal romance: it passes quickly, it's remembered for a long time, but then you still have to return to your real life.

@g1489536: I agree with it. Great film. It's even great to see it again after 15 years. But I think you missed one thing - feelings escape logic all the time, like the ending whispering.
I can't decide on my attitude to the film.) Whether it's boring pretentious stuff, as is often the case with Sofia Coppola. Whether it's a deep melancholy charming story with meaning.

A sad and very vital film about a fleeting moment of happiness in a routine and boring life. I really liked the calm tone of the film, everything is measured and slow, you enjoy and feel every moment. And of course the ending is very sad and touching, but it's the way it should be...

"For now."

It's a very atmospheric, soulful, melancholic and sad film.
I'll like it quite a lot. I especially liked that there was no sexual connection between the characters, given all the possibilities. This is exactly a high touching relationship, where two people, though not for long, but gave each other something that they had not felt for a long time.

I think the fact of cheating with the singer is superfluous in this story, it seems to denigrate Bob as a man who has a wife and children and who also has some emotions and mutual understanding with Charlotte.

The whispering trick at the end is very interesting. It's very intriguing what he said to her. But at the same time, it gives everyone the opportunity to think on their own.

@Даня_: but it seems to me that the final kiss vulgarized everything more. If before that the characters were considered as just people, kindred spirits, then this kiss lowered them to the primitive level of "man and woman" who cheat on their partners. And, yes, they're both unhappy in their relationship. but! Before the kiss, they honestly try to find a way out. And that kiss...
and that one-night stand woman: another way to show that romance was born between the characters (otherwise why would there be tension between them later). So that the viewer does not get the idea that they are just people close in spirit.

I expected more, but the plot didn't catch on. Some details and sensations are subtly conveyed and shown: for example, boredom or loss. I liked the use of pale and blue shades. But I don't want to review it, and while watching it, the thought arose: "It would be better if he bought a Porsche."

However, there is still something about it that suggests some thoughts. Another interesting detail is what the world looked like before the development of the Internet and technology. No translator, no navigator with a map, no convenient chats, nothing…

After watching it, it makes you wonder if it's worth moving somewhere. Loneliness, language, culture and values. It's all going to haunt you after you move to another country, and this movie describes it 100%. Why do many of those who have moved and stayed gather in communities? They are looking for their own, their own language, traditions, interests, humor, so why not stay where they belong? The future of life depends only on the state: bad times in the country or the war - forces you to move or endure. 4.5/5

The film is very mediocre. But the way the feeling of boredom is conveyed and the way the film evokes it is commendable. If we're watching a comedy to have a laugh, then this movie is perfect for getting bored.
It seems to me that after such films, along with such popular genres as action, thriller, etc., you can introduce another "boredom" 🤣
