Overview

County Durham, England, 1984. The miners' strike has started and the police have started coming up from Bethnal Green, starting a class war with the lower classes suffering. Caught in the middle of the conflict is 11-year old Billy Elliot, who, after leaving his boxing club for the day, stumbles upon a ballet class and finds out that he's naturally talented. He practices with his teacher Mrs. Wilkinson for an upcoming audition in Newcastle-upon Tyne for the royal Ballet school in London.

A strong picture, about the power that lives inside.

It's a great movie. About a childhood dream and love of dancing. The film perfectly dispels the stupid stereotypes that dancing is for girls, but boxing is for boys.

Great scene with a transvestite friend with her sister's dress! Billy, for understanding, it's a credit.

The film is very far from reality, I never believed in what was happening. More like a fairy tale. In reality, his family would just beat the crap out of him, and that would be the end of the story.

And even in the emotional scenes, the film doesn't seem to be putting the squeeze on it. Everything is so unsaid, forced. You're already cringing. It's a strange movie. I would love to feel it, but it's like the characters themselves are embarrassed by everything that's happening...

@George_Lightwood: I really liked it. The main character's father is atypical, gentle in character, and clearly loved his late wife very much. No wonder Billy's main mantra is, "Mom would let me." Both Billy's father and brother are normal, peace-loving men, who are embittered by the shitty economic situation in the country. And also, "what will people say" and "men won't understand."
That's why I don't consider what I've shown to be a fairy tale. Well, if only for one that's a lie, but it has a hint. ;)

@Nika_ka: The main character is such a peasant with common sense, despite his age.
