The picture is beautiful, no doubt. But it's not 2010, and we've already watched Mr. Nobody.
Bo is an extremely hypochondriacal, spineless and cowardly man whose fears and doubts have been cultivated by an overbearing mother since birth. And almost a third of the film is an illustration of the hero's attempts to deal with this, which each time ends in complete passivity on his part. He runs away from any problem, is afraid of the slightest danger, is easily provoked and manipulated, and is not ready to even minimally take responsibility for his actions.
And over time, our character faces a moral choice: either stay in the golden cage, being persecuted by his fears and prejudices, or try to become an Atlantean, straightening his shoulders, finally emancipating himself from a toxic parent. Actually, the director perfectly shows here all the childish naivety of Bo, who paints his new life in the scenery of the Orchard, with tomato and plum lilac, ripe garden. Unsurprisingly, the whole stream of dreams ends in disappointment when the protagonist is unable to answer imaginary children about their birth.
Well, as a final, long-awaited meeting with the mother with the dotting of all the i. Where we see that the parent is alive and in good health, no matter how much Bo tries to bury her inside himself, which, by the way, he is also afraid to admit. That in fact they have nothing but mutual hatred for each other, and the father is extremely demonized and thrown somewhere on the far shelf of the attic. And in the case of this film, in the truest sense of the word.
Here you can argue in interpretations, but the general meaning is about the same. I may be wrong, and I do not pretend to be objective at all, but I perceive this film precisely as another problem of fathers and children, told simply using other expressive tools
