Rihanna unveils the first trailer for the new "Smurfs"
The Smurfs are returning to the big screens! Paramount Pictures has released the first full trailer for the animated musical "Smurfs", in which Smurfette is voiced by singer Rihanna. The film will be released in theaters on July 18, 2025.
The new film will raise questions of identity of the Smurfs and explore how they are introduced to the real world. The musical will be a reboot of the universe, and this time the characters are fully animated, and inspiration for their creation was drawn from the original comic books by Belgian artist Peyo.
"Peyo’s comics were were our blueprint, also aesthetically, and then you look for opportunities within that. You have the Smurfs village, for example, this mysterious, magical place. You can reinvent it a bit or add to the lore. How did they get there? Why are they there?" — director Chris Miller revealed at the Annecy Animation Festival.
In addition to voice acting, Rihanna is also a producer on the project and wrote original songs for the movie. At CinemaCon 2023, the singer jokingly admitted that she tried to land the role of Papa Smurf but was turned down.
