Action movies seem simple: chases, shooting, explosions. But this chaos often hides ideas, style, and even philosophy. In this collection there're seven films that combine spectacle with unexpected depth.
7 iconic actions that turned out to be brilliant
A still from the movie "The Mummy"

"Demolition Man"

Crime, action, sci-fi | 3.95 out of 5 on MyShows | 1993

кадр из фильма «Разрушитель»

In 2032, after 35 years frozen in a cryo-prison, ruthless criminal Simon Phoenix awakens and wreaks havoc in peaceful, violence-free Los Angeles. The police can't cope and decide to unfreeze Sgt. John Spartan, an officer from the 1990s who already stopped Phoenix once before and went to the same prison for it.

"It's surprising to revisit the movie after all these years and see here a California soy woke utopia where two toxically masculine men from the 90s happen to be. Nice humor and satire that, oh horror, is getting closer and closer to reality. In place are the very shells and virtual sex as the only two elements that have not evaporated from memory in 20+ years In place are two charismatic men and the always beautiful Sandy Bee. The movie is very well preserved and looks great in 2025. The only thing is that the soundtrack is dull, except of course for the most popular radio in San Angeles, where 24 by 7 commercial jingles are played. Already, probably, can be recorded in the classics of the genre", — ekko

"Bloodsport"

Action, thriller, drama | 3.98 out of 5 on MyShows | 1988

American soldier Frank Dux prepares for an underground martial arts tournament in Hong Kong, the legendary Kumite. As a child, he was adopted by a karate master from Japan and trained in the ancient art. After much training, Frank received a sacred sword as a symbol of high achievement. He deserts from the unit and goes to the tournament, where FBI agents start hunting for him. Overcoming all obstacles, Frank makes it to the finals and becomes the winner, earning a place in the Brotherhood of the Black Dragon.

"A childhood movie. It was the first movie I watched in the 90s on videotape, and it's been etched in my memory ever since", — AlexanderZakharov

"Con Air"

Action, thriller, crime | 4 out of 5 on MyShows | 1997

кадр из фильма «Воздушная тюрьма»

Con Air is a U.S. police transportation unit that transports highly dangerous criminals. Cameron Poe, released after eight years in prison, flies home aboard an airplane carrying particularly dangerous criminals. The flight turns into a nightmare: the criminals hijack the airliner. To get back to his family, Poe decides to stop the hijacking from the inside.

"A cool action movie with a classy cast. I loved watching it as a kid, but I didn't know anyone except Cage))) With age re-watching it, already realize how cool everyone is 💪🙂 ", — mir4ik

"Tremors"

Horror, action, sci-fi, fantasy, comedy | 3.95 out of 5 on MyShows | 1996

кадр из сериала «Дрожь земли»

Val and Earl, laborers from the backwater town of Perfection, Nevada, are about to leave, but strange tremors stop them. Together with a seismology student, they discover that giant flesh-eating worms are burrowing underground. Now a handful of residents must do battle with the monsters, preying on anything that moves.

"This is probably my favorite movie so far. There are moments where you can laugh heartily. Also included are scenes where you watch the main characters and their next decisions with bated breath. I recommend everyone to watch this masterpiece of a sci-fi comedy thriller", — KatieSenorita

"The Running Man"

Action, sci-fi, thriller | 3.77 out of 5 on MyShows | 1987

кадр из фильма «Бегущий человек»

In 2019 America has become a paramilitary state, where the main entertainment is the violent TV show "The Running Man". Its contestants are innocent people forced to flee from armed hunters with no chance of survival. The movie is based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman.

"The depiction of a future with ubiquitous fake news and deepfake has proven incredibly prophetic", — nvrsk

"The Mummy"

Adventure, action, fantasy | 4.44 out of 5 on MyShows | 1999

кадр из фильма «Мумия»

In the Egyptian desert, a group of adventurers from different countries search for Pharaoh's treasure, unaware that an ancient curse guards the treasure. Along with the riches, they awaken the mummy of an executed priest, and the priest comes back to life to unleash an ancient horror upon the world.

"Due to the fact that this movie has been re-watched on cassette tape so many times, it's no surprise that I caught a crash on Brendan Fraser as a kid. But if you step away from the gg, the movie itself is very well made and you plunge into the atmosphere as if you were in this desert yourself. And some scrimmers with mummies scared the shit out of me in my childhood. Arnold Voslu, who played Imhotep - top! But, unfortunately, the other parts didn't hook me as much as the first one. Despite the beautiful love story between O'Connell and Evelyn 🤍 ", — loremipsum

"I, Robot"

Comedy, drama | 4.19 out of 5 on MyShows | 2004

кадр из фильма «Я, робот»

In 2035 robots have become part of everyday life, acting as human assistants. A police officer who doesn't trust machines begins investigating a robot-involved murder that violates the basic Robot Law: do no harm to humans. If this law can be circumvented, then robots are capable of spiraling out of control, and the humanity that has long depended on them is in mortal danger.

"One of my favorite movies that I rewatch consistently once an hour", — ruslaaanna

I didn't watch the mummy and the robot, the rest are very cool!

Blood sport has a joke when it turned out that all this about Dukes is fiction, not real events :)

I watched all the movies - nostalgia. Everyone is interesting in their own way, but they are all cool. Perhaps now they will not seem very watchable to the sophisticated viewer, the graphics are outdated or something else, but the films do not almost lose from this.

What a selection. I got a piece of paper in my eye .
I don't think I've only watched Blood Sports and Running. And that's not accurate. CTC showed 100%.
I'm still thinking of arranging a week of Shaking the earth, as TV channels used to do. Moreover, I did not watch the last 3 parts. Maybe you shouldn't, of course...

@feniksoflove: it's better not to;) There are probably 7 parts already, and there's not much left of the original idea.

We recently discussed the remake of Tremor with @Hidji. The creators of the original have regained the rights and are negotiating with Bacon. it remains only to wait. they promise a direct continuation of the first part, ignoring 2-7🥲

I would add here, for example, a Cobra with a Stallone. Is Sly steeper than the mountains, or is his opponent)
And I still listen to the soundtrack sometimes.

I remember as a child, every time I saw a Mummy on TV, I stayed to watch it. Probably one of my favorite childhood movies with the same native characters. I, Robot, have also loved Smith since childhood. I remember how creepy the scene seemed, in which a bunch of robots are crawling around the building.
Great selection!

I thought about how much action movies have changed over the last 40 years.

In the 80s, it was a celebration of testosterone: one hero, a bunch of enemies, everything explodes — "Rambo", "Commando", "Cobra".

In the 90s, jokes and charisma were added - let's recall "Die Hard" and "Lethal Weapon".

2000s — the era of style and stunts: "The Matrix", "Born", "Mission Impossible".

Now action movies have become darker, more realistic, and more socially charged—like "John Wick" or "Sicario." The plot has become more complicated, the characters are more traumatized, and the morality is ambiguous.

It seems that the genre has matured along with the audience.

@ИнтeрecныйФиллep: I like the way you described the genre change - growing up - very succinctly. I would even say that the genre has not just matured, but has become a cynic and a realist like adults, and therefore there is almost no place for goodness and miracles.

@Evittta: Oh, yes, it's fashionable now, a gray ambiguous morality, and that the main character died in the end... but maybe in 10 years we will remember with nostalgia in the comments.: and do you remember how the main characters used to die, but now they don't take it off)

The films, of course, are not direct masterpieces, but, indeed, there is an element of cultishness.… I only disagree with the Destroyer, but this is imho, maybe I passed by my part of the brain responsible for the cult)))
