"True Detective" creator wants Rust and Marty back: "I have a new story"
"True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto has hinted at the possible return of iconic first season characters Rust Cohle and Marty Hart. He revealed on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast that he has a new story for the duo, played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
"It’s character-based again. … But it’s not something I’ve written or anything. It’s just, I had that in my head. And we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to it. It’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not", — Pizzolatto said.
The project hasn't gotten the green light yet, but the interest from the creator and cast is clearly there. The first season of "True Detective" came out in 2014 and is still considered the best in the anthology. It earned McConaughey and Harrelson Emmy nominations and was the television event of the year.
Following Pizzolatto's departure from the franchise, HBO continued the show without him: a fourth season titled "Night Country" starring Jodie Foster from writer Issa López was released in early 2024, with a fifth installment currently in development.
Pizzolatto himself explained that he left the project in 2019 for personal reasons:
"I myself was spiritually tired of walking in that much darkness. And dealing with such dark materials. And then I got full custody of my daughter back and that was a situation where I really needed to be a father… and I had to step away from a lot of work in 2020".
Perhaps this is due to the fact that I watched the first three seasons in a row and the second and third were much inferior to the first. And the fourth one is later, as it comes out, and I rather liked it than not. Of course, he's also much inferior to the first one, but the second and third absolutely didn't suit me. In the fourth one, I liked the oppressive atmosphere of the polar night, the touch of mysticism and, of course, Jodie Foster's game - if it hadn't been for her, maybe all this wouldn't have worked. And I don't see anything surprising - everyone has different tastes.
The main thing is an interesting story and well-written characters, without the hassle.
