From Alfonso Cuarón to Alex Garland: 7 great dystopian films

"Children of Men"
Drama, action, thriller, sci-fi | 3.9 out of 5 on MyShows | 2006
2027. For the last 18 years no children have been born in the world, and now the threat of extinction hangs over humanity. Alfonso Cuarón's film is set in a London plagued by violence and rival nationalist groups. Theo Faron lives here. It is he who will have to give humanity hope for salvation and deliver a lonely woman, who mysteriously managed to get pregnant, to a safe place.
"A hard sci-fi drama in the entourage of a brutal dystopian future in which people continue to "devour" themselves in hatred, even though an incurable disease threatens them with complete extinction. Dirty gray tones, atmosphere of hopelessness and despair oozing from every frame, the movie itself is very depressing, and its end can hardly be called happy. Although the plot still traces the idea that even in such a rotten world there is something human. Special mention should be made of the excellent acting of Clive Owen and Julianne Moore, as well as excellent camerawork", — Barnaby.
"Recently re-watched it - even more relevant, still as sad and suspenseful. A brilliant movie", — randolphcarter.

"A great dystopia. Garfield as always gorgeous, really liked Keira Knightley as a kind of "negative" character, although I understand her very much", — Lyubanya_Yu.

"Metropolis"
Drama, sci-fi | 4.15 out of 5 on MyShows | 1927
A great Fritz Lang film that influenced countless directors and figures in the film industry. "Metropolis" was the most expensive film in the history of German silent cinema. Lang filmed the picture for two years and during this time almost wasted all the money of the studio, as a result, the movie did not pay off at the box office.
The film is set in the futuristic city of Metropolis, divided into working class and wealthy citizens. Workers live on the lower level, and the privileged strata of the population — on the upper level. One day Freder, the son of the ruler of Metropolis, sees a girl from the "lower level" and immediately falls in love with her. He follows her into the underground part of the city and learns the eerie truth about Metropolis.
"Great movie, was able to hold my attention throughout", — Tiinsa.

"Watching the movie with a feeling of "it all makes sense to me", and near the end smiling at the fact that the director has led you around his finger. The movie leaves a lot of questions and reflections. You want to discuss it and recommend it to others to discuss again. the year is 95, folks, and the director is already fumbling for the conflicts of the future", — Octo.

"Civil War"
Action, drama, military | 3.93 out of 5 on MyShows | 2024
A civil war rages between the authoritarian government of the United States and the armies of the autonomous states of California and Texas. Alex Garland's military dystopia tells the story of a group of journalists trying to reach Washington, D.C., in time to get one last interview with the country's president before the White House falls.
"Very cool movie, straight up good fun. Everything is cinematic and spectacular. The reasons for the conflict and the beginning of everything that happens aren't really revealed, but that doesn't really bother me much. Otherwise, it's a great road movie, showing the events of the civil war in the country. Dunst is good, too", — Tikhonov91.
"This is a movie. I'm very impressed. Everything is great! The trailer seemed to promise a road movie, in the style of Last of us maybe, but this is a solid war drama about photojournalists. No black, no white, just a very sad story( I have a case of expectations being WAY lower", — barbie_turatova.
"Alexander Garland serves as director and writer in the movie. To be honest, all the movies I've seen from him as a director haven't really hit me. But the script for "28 Days Later" turned out great, as well as the movie itself. However, I rather liked this "road trip" than not. Kirsten Dunst was excellent, and the rest of their foursome looked very impressive. Jesse Plemons, who played a nameless military man, performed stunningly. Definitely the strongest scene in the movie. I didn't like the ending. Yes, the symbolism there is understandable, but somehow banal, for my taste", — Gordey.
