A still from the movie Apocalypse Now

"Go and See"

Belarus, 1943. 16-year-old Flera wants to do his part to defend his homeland from the Nazis and heads into the forest to join a partisan unit. Elem Klimov's gruesome and devastating masterpiece and one of the best war movies ever made.

"A difficult but utterly magnificent movie. Particularly striking is the heartbreaking look of a man who has gone through all these horrors, transforming from a green boy into a broken old man. Kravchenko is certainly a Talent with a capital letter", — szagoruy.

"Too few people watched it and that's too bad", — Noncorpum.

"Very heavy movie, almost from the beginning to the end sat in tears", — DriedWorm.

"All Quiet on the Western Front" / Im Westen nichts Neues

Drama, war, action | 4.19 out of 5 on MyShows | 2022

кадр из фильма «На Западном фронте без перемен»

The movie is set in 1917. a 17-year-old German boy, Paul Bäumer, enlists with his friends. They are full of romantic notions of war, but in the trenches their naive euphoria is replaced by despair and fear.

Edward Berger's picture is based on the debut novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, based on his personal experience. Berger did an excellent job: the project received nine nominations for Oscar, including for Best Film. But despite the success of the picture, many consider it worse than the previous screenings of "All Quiet on the Western Front" in 1930 and 1979. We recommend watching those, too.

"A heavy war movie, psychologically pressing on a person while watching it. Throughout the 2+ hours you worry with all your heart for the main character. The movie's color-correctness keeps you in suspense all the time: the lack of soft colors echoes my words. The unpredictability of the character's actions coincides with the linear composition of the movie - which is competently narrated in the book. Definitely recommended viewing," - lemulya.

"City of Life and Death" / 南京! 南京!

Drama, military, historical | 4.14 out of 5 on MyShows | 2009

In 1937, Japan occupied Nanjing: the city was the capital of China at the time. The Chinese army escaped, and upon entering the city, the Japanese soldiers go on a rampage: they rape, kidnap and kill. The Nanjing Massacre is shown both from the perspective of the locals and through the eyes of Japanese soldier Kadokawa.

The black-and-white movie directed by Lu Chuan, whose original title translates as "Nanjing! Nanjing!", cost 80 million yuan (that's about $12 million), but paid off completely in the first five days of release.

"Platoon"

Drama, war, action | 4.12 out of 5 on MyShows | 1986

Chris Taylor is a young, naive American who drops out of college and volunteers for the Vietnam War. When he arrives, he becomes embroiled in a conflict between two sergeants, one of whom believes that the nearby villagers are harboring Vietcong soldiers, while the other is sympathetic to the locals. This struggle pits the soldiers not only against the enemy, but also against each other.

Oliver Stone's movie is an insightful exploration of the brutality of war and the duality of man. After "Platoon", Stone, who himself fought in Vietnam, made two more films about the war: "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Heaven & Earth".

"Apocalypse Now"

Drama, war | 4.24 out of 5 on MyShows | 1979

Кадр из фильма «Апокалипсис сегодня»

Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece starring Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando.

In the midst of the Vietnam War, exhausted and tired Special Forces Captain Benjamin L. Willard is sent to the Vietnam War. Willard is sent into the jungle to destroy the maddened officer Walter E. Kurtz. But the closer Willard gets to his goal, the more he realizes he won't come back from this mission the same.

"One of the best war movies ever made", — Noncorpum.

"Coppola worried in vain about Brando and his weight. In my opinion, it worked out to shoot him the only right way and show Col. Kurtz as a monolith. He's like a pagan idol looming over Willard. The effect is really awesome and creepy", — Will_I_am.

"1917"

April 6, 1917. Two British soldiers are given a dangerous mission: they must break through enemy territory and deliver an urgent message. If it is not received in time, 1,600 soldiers will fall into a deadly trap.

"1917" Sam Mendes was filmed in long takes — for this team rehearsed scenes and camera choreography for six months. Then the movie was edited in such a way that it felt like it was made in one shot.

"The filming and acting by the actors is superb. It's a tough movie, like any war movie", — sonarana.

"Wow! You can't take your eyes off the movie at all. The picture is mesmerizing, the scene with a run at the end of 3 times revisited. Strong movie, I highly recommend to watch", — Karleschka.

"A lot of time in the movie is devoted to frightening silence, uncertainty. The deepest immersion in what is happening is the greatest merit of cameraman Deakins, to the point of goosebumps on the skin", — wh1te_dreams.

I remember Rage from the last war films https://myshows.me/movie/270/
He's not very famous. But it was shot qualitatively. It makes an impression. And there's a bunch of Hollywood stars playing there, led by Brad Pitt.
Well, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. https://myshows.me/movie/100677/
The classic is already a truly iconic film.
I advise you to look at one of our
The white tiger. https://myshows.me/movie/68086/
As it seems to me, undeservedly forgotten.

Of all the films presented here, only "Go and watch" is worthy of attention, and the rest is just some kind of bollywood. 🤷‍♂️
This is my subjective opinion, which may not coincide with yours.

@igormarkin34: well, the description says that this is just a selection of films about the war, that is, any to the taste of the author, and not specifically Soviet. There are separate collections on the topic of Soviet or specific wars.
It would be nice if in the future the second part was released on the topic of the Soviet ones, so that more people would know about the films not mentioned)

"United Security Zone", 2000

And another one, definitely not the best, but released recently. And it's better to treat it like a film placed in a military setting "Civil war" 2024.
