Overview

"I am poor and put upon", concedes Becky Sharp during the first episode of Vanity Fair, but it rapidly becomes clear that she intends to change this situation, scrambling up the social ladder by exploiting her guile, good looks and the gullibility of doting males. In the light of her selfish, single-minded resolve to achieve success, Sharp may be viewed as an optimistic dreamer, pragmatic schemer, proto-feminist or a coquettish combination of all three.

Mixed emotions from the series remained. I liked the script and the acting (especially Natasha Little is good), absolutely did not like the excessive use of large and detailed plans and fixation on the ugly. Perhaps they wanted to reflect the satirical beginning in the novel, but it turned out unsuccessfully, for my taste. Such techniques work pointwise, and when the whole movie consists of almost them, it only causes boredom and rejection. If not for that, I would have put 5, after all, Davis knows how to work with classics like no one else, it seems to me)

Why didn't the theft of jewelry, etc., come to light? It amazes me. -_-

I read the novel for a long time and I remember the plot vaguely, but knowing that Andrew Davis wrote the script, you can be calm that the book was approached with respect. I liked the first episode - Becky is a very unusual heroine, the rest of the characters are also very colorful. The only thing I don't like is the director's fascination with close-ups. All these full-screen mouths or nose picking, it's just not clear why it was done, and even in such quantity?
