36 episodes are a great platform to unfold a simple story and touch the feelings of dozens of characters.
But most importantly, and this is the core of the entire Macross franchise: Music & War. How do aliens relate to what we consider mundane? What should we do if banal things for us cause them indescribable delight, making them literally freeze in place?
Today, more than one person cannot imagine their life without music (on a computer, in a player, on a phone, on a TV), we constantly surround ourselves with it and cannot live without it.
Music raised morale in the war, back in the distant 82 year.
In addition to living human stories and intergalactic carnage, we are shown politics and the problem of the "human factor" in all these aspects.
It's a very old, somewhat naive, somewhat unfinished anime, but with an amazing idea as a basis and forever memorable music.
