Babylon: Season 1

It's not easy to work in the London police. Everyone, from high cabinet chiefs to ordinary patrolmen on the streets, is under the close and biased attention of the media and must take into account how negatively any of their actions can be presented. And unsightly punctures certainly happen in such a big city, so the staff of the public relations department always has an emergency.

The plot seems to be simple. The head of the metropolitan police, who is constantly getting into high-profile scandals, attracts an American star of online conferences and a media expert to work as the head of the PR service so that she improves the image of the police and changes the established image of blockheads in uniform. However, the expected bantering, sarcastic, but funny caricature suddenly turns into a very deep, gloomy and even tragic story.

Dynamic and intense production and editing, shooting with a moving camera and frequent change of plans give a sense of authenticity. The action is constantly jumping: offices, places of operations, pubs, riot zones, press conference halls - and nowhere does it linger for long. Despite the excellent casting and the highest acting level of the performers, many of the "office" characters turned out to be a little artificial, but some recognizably naturalistic types of police officers "on the ground" succeeded admirably. Excellent dialogues with an abundance of jokes, banter and insults of varying degrees of rudeness and wit, obscenity or grace. A minimum of musical accompaniment adds to the everyday authenticity.

It turned out to be a very unusual, clever, moderately provocative, realistic, energetic and very entertaining series with a rather complex tone. Not so much a satirical comedy, but rather a tough and convincing drama with comedic elements and sarcastic humor, with concrete authenticity and sad relevance, with a lot of serious and topical topics, problems and questions raised.

Language. They speak a lot, in a very diverse and often difficult way. The relatively correct language and more or less understandable pronunciation of office employees are often complicated by not the simplest vocabulary and phrasing. Many junior ranks are distinguished by rather heavy accents and generally poor diction. Both of them sometimes speak too fast. I recommend subtitles.
