It's a pretty good idea and a perfectly acceptable implementation.
In general, it is noticeable that this is a product of the first half of the noughties. The drawing and color scheme, plus a strange-sounding J-pop, coupled with not the coolest animation and silly faces in comedic moments.
The plot is simple. The modern world is full of magic and gg is a loser who will not be so simple. It is also quite the standard of its time. Now we get stories where gg is only a loser for the first half of the first episode, and in the anime from the time of Maburaho, he remained so until the end, but at the same time did not give up and went ahead without cheating.
Although I'm lying here. Still, the gg here could cast spells of a level that is not achievable by almost anyone. But he also has a corresponding limitation - 8 (and if you consider what turned out in the finale, then all 10) times in his whole life he can cast.
Well, in just half a season, he merges all his spells, dies and becomes a spirit.

And here's something that's really not found in current anime. This hero is a great character, not because he is an omnipotent naguator. He is a man who has to achieve everything, and the reward is appropriate.
The harem component. There is some sooooooo strong assumption here.
One day, three very decent girls start wanting him. A hot rich woman who wants to give birth to the strongest magician from him, a tsundere samurai who didn't really need him (she loved another senpai), but eventually fell in love, and a smart girl who decided to be his wife by all means. Then there will be a childhood friend, but she only plays an important role in the finale.
And that's where I'd like to scold the series. Half of the characters are developing from cold calculation and hopelessness to real warm feelings. But for others, the character deteriorates just for the hell of it.

Yuna turns from a sweet and loving girl into just a jealous bitch. In season 2/3, she shows in every possible way that she is his future wife, that she will take care of him and support him. Yes, she was inconvenienced by her rivals, but that didn't stop her from doing her best to be the best among all. And then something clicked abruptly, and they don't explain what exactly, and Yuna starts stupidly aggrandizing over anything and without him. You said hello to a nice girl, the commandant, YOU'RE CHEATING! On it hung Curico and twisted seals that he even did not lift muscle - Uuuuh traitor! Have you tried Rin's lunch? How the hell could you?!
And at the same time situations that cannot be understood ambiguously in any way. He's just fucking polite to the commandant. The hyperactive blonde is stronger than him in all plans (let me remind you, he's a loser in life). Rin just gave him a taste of the bento, which he didn't even like.
There would be no complaints if the behavior had been like this for all 24 episodes, but it changes too abruptly and unexpectedly.
Well, I didn't appreciate the idea that when it turned out that his child would be the coolest magician, the whole female half of the school wanted loshar. Although, if you think about it that way, then such hyperbolization helps to feel a gap in the relationship when he becomes a ghost, because girls abruptly do not need him because they cannot get a seed from a ghost for an heir, and the guys are already beyond him.... They held him.
In general, on the one hand it is annoying, on the other hand you understand why it was necessary when the time comes.
Result. This is a decent sample of anime from the noughties. Yes, it has outdated drawing and not the coolest animation, there are a lot of annoying moments, but there is something in this title that allows you to ignore the irregularities of the plot and characters. As an anime for the evening, it's quite good. As for me, anime is underrated.
P.S. I almost forgot the most important thing. The commandant is the best girl in the series. IMHO 10 out of 10
