Yuasa Masaaki writes unusual things, and then shoots in an even more unusual drawing. His work tends to appeal to more mature audiences, and is mostly about the adult generation. Take, for example, cat soup, incredibly cruel, surreal and disgusting, but so vital! Take Kaiba, who has completely lost her shape and dripped into the very depths of the human psyche. Then there are the Claws of the Beast (which I never watched) and the Tale of four and a half tatami mats (which I didn't like, but it's still considered a masterpiece)))), which are already closer to reality. Apparently, the public began to weigh on the author, who did not want to understand the veiled stories, and he presented us with a still dashing, but already realism.

Ping pong came to us at the dawn of the riot of the Spokones, when successful anime about basketball, volleyball and other team games were on everyone's lips. But ping-pong is an individual game, and with all your ups and downs, you fight on your own, alone. 11 episodes fly by rapidly, before us is the life from early childhood to the established maturity of at least five characters. Everyone has different approaches, both to the game and to life. I really liked that it was shown, albeit raggedly and unevenly, but in great detail, how the worldview of these guys was formed, what life situations made them what they became. And how the cyclicity and monotony of life haunt us, wandering from generation to generation. In the presence of surrealism, the author again dripped exclusively in our reality, in the human psyche, in the inevitability of choice, in the monotony of our environment, so banal and inanimate.
