Overview

The affluent Ushiromiya family patriarch, Kinzo, is on his deathbed, and his family has assembled at their private island to discuss the division of his estate. As they bicker over their father's immense inheritance, a typhoon closes in, trapping them on the island. They suddenly receive an eerie word of warning...and then, in the dead of night, the murders begin. One by one, family members are discovered murdered in bizarre and inhuman ways. Some within the family turn to superstition, blaming it on a witch rumored to inhabit the island. But one of them - the young Battler Ushiromiya - refuses to accept the supernatural and vows to uncover the real killer behind the seemingly impossible slaughters. He soon finds himself confronted by the apparent witch, and enters into a life-or-death battle for the truth.

I don't like such series at all, but curiosity, faith in the best and love of psychology often make me gnaw on a cactus. Take 18 people, lock them in a house on an island, kill almost everyone and find the killer - this is the last century, isn't it? Nowadays, it is impossible without heavy drugs. I didn't understand much about the first half of the series. There are too many delusional inserts and situations. As it turned out later, anime should have been treated not as mysticism and horror, but as fiction and detective. For all my dislike of detective stories, I adore fiction, so the second half went much more cheerfully. The plot is very complicated, not only are there about 30 characters that you can distinguish and remember by name, but there are also several parallel universes in which these characters can have different guises, each universe has different deaths and murderers, different developments, and it's still shown mixed up. I think the picture will work out if you watch the series three times in a row. On the other hand, I now finally understand the meaning of Cicadas, but unfortunately I'm still not ready to read them, although I'm closer to this desire than before.
I would like to praise the anime in many aspects: I really liked the music, the delightful entourage of the remnants of the Victorian era in the second half of the 20th century, and I also love it when the Japanese depict Western mythology, religion and morals – they do it very unusual and well. I would like to say bravo for the whole crowd of characters – everyone came out as an individual, you remember the whole countless crowd, and this is difficult to achieve. I really liked witches, "stuff", fantastic inserts with fights. But I don't give a high rating, because it was often very boring to watch. I wasn't happy with the complicated construction either, and the fact that they didn't show us everything, they told us, and they won't show us anymore was completely disappointing.
It's a pity that not enough has been translated. But maybe someday…

A warning.
If you're a fan of Cicadas, then watch it.
If you don't know what cicadas are, then here are a few words about what awaits you.
Firstly. It's not a detective story - it's a hardcore drug addiction, and besides, it's not a comedy. There is no logic here, and you will not be able to speculate about what is happening, analyze it.
Secondly. This anime doesn't have an ending, so don't count on philosophy in the last episode.
Thirdly. terrible implementation. Disgusting grimaces of the characters, disgusting behavior, disgusting sounds.
Fourth. The endless eight. every five (or so) episodes, everything will be repeated.

@SmilePS: The main storyline, the game of Butler and Beatrice, is absurd. From the very beginning, we were shown everything that was possible, thereby killing the intrigue in the bud. The essence of the game was to prove to the witch that magic does not exist by explaining her magic with logic (more precisely, with false logic, this is the very logic that arises in a person after using narcotic substances), and yes, while Butler tries to prove the absence of magic, he will be in a kind of purgatory, moving through time and talking to ghosts. I was hoping until the very last episode that he would win. After all, he only had to say two words–"I'm schizophrenic." And then everything would fall into place. He killed everyone on the island and blamed it on magic, but the conversation is actually being conducted in a psychiatric hospital. If this scenario had been shown in the last episode, it would have been nice, not good, but at least somehow. But we never found out anything, the anime just stopped in mid-sentence and that's it. No explanation whatsoever. What a twist!
And yet, sometimes the authors gave up on the game, and showed us just the life of the main characters. It went from one to three episodes. It was really interesting to watch, I liked it. But then they went back to Beatrice again. And the shit started happening again.
A few words about the little things.
Some of the characters had super powers that were never explained. One could do magic, the other knew kungfu, the girl carried a pair of metal brass knuckles in her bag, and the servants didn't understand what they were doing at all. What the hell?!
Beatrice could speak with subtitles! /rukalitso /rukalitso /rukalitso
As a result, we have a very absurd, illogical story, with poor drawing, inappropriate musical accompaniment, and, moreover, without an ending. And no matter how funny what's happening on the screen is, it's not a comedy.

Their relatives are being killed, but they don't care. It feels like the emotions haven't been delivered.
