What an ambiguous series! The first five episodes seem to be about nothing, and only confuse the viewer, but then... After watching it to the end, I realize that perhaps the creators of the anime made a lot more sense in the first series than I thought. I personally liked the ending of the series - a kind of mixture of hope and uncertainty. In addition, I really liked the opening (at first I even thought it was the best thing about Blue Drop) - it's a very emotional song that immediately sets you up for the right mood. By the way, I liked the anime more than the manga - it has a more thoughtful and meaningful plot. I don't know, maybe there are some other mangaka works on Blue Drop (I've read three manga, and the last one is four stories about aruma the pimp, which, as you can imagine, were not very original), but if not, then the manga is definitely inferior to the anime. As for me, Blue Drop is a pretty good series with a touch of shoujo-ai and a fair amount of science fiction, so if you like both, then you can watch this series at least without nausea.
