Overview

Becoming Elizabeth is the fascinating story of the early life of England's most iconic Queen. Long before she ascended the throne, young Elizabeth Tudor was an orphaned teenager who became embroiled in the political and sexual politics of the English court. With no clear heir, the death of King Henry the VIII sets into motion a dangerous scramble for power. His surviving children find themselves pawns in a game between the great families of England and the powers of Europe who vie for control of the country.

Elizabeth struggles to control her own destiny and take real power as the men around her attempt to claim her sovereignty. Her fascinating and factual journey to secure the crown is filled with scheming, betrayal and illicit relationships that threaten to bring forth her demise at a time in which every man or woman of the court is on the wheel of fortune, which may take them to a position of great power one moment, or the executioner's block the next.

When you start to realize that almost all the main characters in the frame have died or will not die naturally and very, very soon: Katarina Parr, Thomas Seymour, Edward Seymour, after a year and a half - Edward himself, then after a couple of months - the eldest Lord Dudley, his son, Jane Grey, then after another five years - Mary Tudor, and then Elizabeth's favorite, another John Dudley (before that, his wife mysteriously and conveniently died under unclear circumstances). There is a constant mention of Henry and his two key wives, who also did not die naturally, Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour.

Only Elizabeth will outlive them all and die of old age. Edward Seymour was right, she learned the right lessons and outlived everyone.

An interesting choice of timeline for the end of the season. I hope there will be a second one with the nine-day reign of Jane Grey, because this period is not very popular on screens and not much has been done about it (only the film with Helena Bonham Carter comes to mind now).

Generally speaking, it's not bad, but still quite superficial. Rather, it is useful for those who would like to remember the events of the era and understand the intrigues. It is certainly perceived easier than a dry Wikipedia. But I hardly want to review this (and I review the Tudors regularly, for example, even though they are very far from historicism).

The upper nobility of the sixteenth century is too scattered with the words fuck and its derivatives. I am far from idealizing and romanticizing that period, but I simply cannot believe what is shown on the screen, the dialogues are more like modern showdowns.

I decided to have breakfast for the series. The medieval pregnancy test, of course, was particularly impressive.

@polibelle: A king doesn't have to be charismatic, he's a kid. In my opinion, the casting is excellent: a small, faceless, pale shadow against the background of strong and adult people in the prime of life who surround him. I'm rather annoyed by his acting, not by His Majesty.
