I, like many people, was surprised by such a light punishment and initially illogical accusation. But, obviously, this is a translation error: in the original, we are talking about voluntary manslaughter, that is, not about premeditated murder, as one could translate this term literally, but about murder in a state of passion. So everything is aimed at proving Blake's temper, and then all three episodes finally make sense.
