The pilot is a bit weak, and then it's very good. Fans of "Doc Martin" will like it. But this series was the first one. A kid from New York, who studied to be a doctor for free with the obligation to work for 4 years in the place that he is indicated, ends up in a town of 800 inhabitants in Alaska.
I've watched two seasons so far. The series is not medical, if anything. Just ONE of the characters is a doctor. About life in a small town, the community as one close-knit family plus occasional visiting tourists. I would say that everyone on the poster is the main characters.
A young Dr. Fleishman who dreams of escaping back to New York. And his silent Indian nurse Marilyn with her mysterious smile.
Pretty Maggie O"Connell is the pilot of a small airplane (air taxi). A comrade in arms and the doctor's hidden romantic interest. Already 4 of her lovers in a row have suddenly died a non-natural death. But there was a fifth daredevil.
Retired hunter Halling, who bought a cafe in retirement, hired an Indian cook, and stood behind the bar himself. And his young silly girl, but sweet and kind blonde Shelly, the beauty queen, and now a waitress in his cafe.
The richest member of the community is retired cosmonaut Maurice Minnifield, who is committed to the development of the city.
Handsome DJ Chris, who is popular with tourists. He also registers weddings and funerals.
Great old Ruth Ann, the owner of the local shop (aka the post office, aka the library), with whom you can always exchange a word.
Well, Ed. Of course it's Ed. The son of the regiment, the son of the whole community. Abandoned half-breed child (Indian/white). A high school student, a thoughtful, dreamy young man who passionately loves movies and especially Woody Allen's films about New York. That's where their interests with the doctor came together. And the series often have references to famous films, books, cultural phenomena or historical figures. Casually in conversation, they compare the events in the town with them.
however... After watching two seasons, I admit that Dr. Martin, with all his quirks, is more interesting.
And here everything is pretty boring, the plot of each episode is some new crazy idea/problem. In places, it went stupid. Some episodes are super dumb! But it's beautiful - Alaska. Someone may be reminded a little of Twin Peaks
Sympathy for the main characters appeared only at the end of the first season.
And also keep in mind that the first two seasons are only in one-voice voiceover
Based on the results of the 3 seasons watched. Definitely a masterpiece. Strangely enough, in the end it also seemed, as I was told, reminiscent, but not a mixture of "Doc Martin" and "Twin Peaks", no matter how strange it might sound. It looks easy, but it touches on many issues that are now taboo in society. It's even a little hard to believe that the series is American. I do not know if I will continue to watch, as the audience warns that due to the big quarrels between the cast and the screenwriters, it gets worse and worse, and I do not want to spoil the impression.

Thank you for such a detailed description.
And in Dr. Martin, this British prim style of the series sticks out from all the cracks - which is very much for an amateur.
