It was only after mature reflection that she finally realized why Georgiana had finally refused the Jew. Upon viewing, I was horrified that the main reason was that the father was not ready to give up his children. However, on reflection, I came to the conclusion that the girl was selflessly ready to give up her family and her entire social circle in order to lock herself in four walls with an unloved spouse. And even despite the loss of his wealth, she would have married him anyway! After all, even then there was a strong confidence that a Jew would still be able to regain his lost wealth and adequately provide for his family. But! If her fiance does not give up his children, it means that his entire fortune will go to his eldest son from a previous marriage. And her unborn children will be left without means of livelihood and will never be accepted by their Jewish relatives, Christian relatives, etc., etc. In general, Trollope always shows himself as a feminist in his books, the most worthy girls are usually penniless (however, there are exceptions in his writing career, but they clearly feel only his the desire to please the public, because during his lifetime he was considered a typical fiction writer, and only decades after his death he was awarded the title of classic). For in contentment, a maiden never has to think much and thoughts about her vale do not develop a personality in her.

@eternity888: the inheritance went completely to the eldest heir only under the entail, Mr. Breygart, for obvious reasons, did not have a entail. He would have provided for all the children completely - he would have left a dowry for the girls, attached the boys to the banking business, which he was engaged in. Moreover, even the collapse of the Mexican railway did not ruin him, but only postponed for a year plans to buy and equip a luxury house in London. I haven't read the book, maybe it's different there, but in the series Georgiana didn't even think about breaking off the engagement. Mr. Breygaert broke it off when he realized that she had no sympathy on her part, but even respect for him, a bare commodity-money relationship. Therefore, I would not wish Roger such a life partner, he deserves the best)

A great series, I really liked the characters, unusual for this genre. In general, it is a very unusual plot, it is interesting to follow. For some reason, I was sure that Hetta would eventually stay with Paul anyway, after all, she said more than once that she would not marry Roger even if she threatened to remain an old maid. Although Roger is sincerely sorry (
I can't help but mention McFadden, he's just gorgeous in the role of Felix, in general, everything was played perfectly, even the minor characters came out memorable and bright.
