An interesting series. Although they approached time travel strangely: when the black hole was destroyed, Priya disappeared. But if Priya didn't go back in time, then she didn't save Orville. Accordingly, they could not destroy the black hole. And it turns out to be a vicious circle (as they said in Star Trek, time paradoxes always bring headaches). PS: after this series, it seems to me that Orville looks more like Voyager than TNG. PSS: And in general, the series turned out to be very good. If the original trailers presented it as a parody of Star Trek, then the series itself is more like a spin-off or a fan fiction.
@VZakirov: Maybe they got into those bubbles because they changed course to save Priya?
In general, time paradoxes have a completely logical explanation through a loop: at the moment of time travel, the timeline swirls after the traveler. And then, after the events of the past have changed, the timeline goes through all the years between the past and the future in the usual way. I drew a picture to make it clearer:
@VZakirov: you can refer to some features of the work of the mole norms. Like, "In case of destruction, all those who flew by and did not come back disappear.
@VZakirov: No, no, @alx explained everything coolly, I just didn't understand it. But with Priya, everything is much simpler. After the destruction of the wormhole, she is no longer in the future and Priya has not been able to go after Orville since the destruction of the burrow.
@alx: It's a nice scheme, but it has nothing to do with real physics. Especially this disappearance of Priya at the end is just a facepalm. This all implies that there is some kind of "time" that is flowing somewhere. In reality, there is no time, there is only the movement of particles and this movement can accelerate or slow down relative to other particles. So you can get into the future by visiting a black hole, for example, where the movement of particles will be greatly slowed down due to gravity relative to particles that are not near the black hole. And in order to return to a certain "past", it is necessary to rebuild all the quintillions of quintillions of particles in the universe into the configuration in which they were in a certain past. Of course, one can imagine such a thing... but this is completely unrealistic. There is no past and or future, there is only one endless present in which particles move and form structures like planets and people who wrote the script for this episode.
@Nathanson: Well, at least someone agreed with me. I also thought about it (though not as a physicist, but on the other hand) and came to the conclusion that it was impossible. Well, that is, even if it were possible, it would not make any sense, because at that point everything was as it was, including the person who would have moved there - he would have forgotten everything if he had existed at all. Or according to some version, he is both in the past and in the future at the same time, only in different states, as a result of the process that took place from there to here - something like that.
@alx: I am wildly infuriated by the impossibility of projection screens, which are no longer something that is in SF products, but in all sorts of Avengers and other things everywhere, but according to the current understanding of the laws of physics, this is impossible! For 10 years I've been dreaming of a smartphone that wouldn't have to be made the size of a shovel because of the screen. But the who is still there - people have not figured out how to project an image into the void! Because the optics, the bastard, says that the light must be reflected from something in order for the picture to turn out, and from the air - a banana :(
@alx: / @ alavitka: There is nothing boring about real advanced science, it's just that screenwriters are too lazy to understand reality. And reality can surprise much more than hackneyed time paradoxes.
Something similar to time travel is possible in principle. For example, you can take the existence of a multiverse with endless scenarios as the truth. Actually, if you read a lot about it well and very, very much, then this is one of the most reasonable explanations for reality. A little less reasonable is to learn how to move between parallel universes. Most likely, it will even be physically impossible, but for fiction, you can try to use it "realistically". Not like in Rick and Mort, but somehow more mundane. From here, you can also think of time travel, where traveling to the "past" will actually be a journey to another universe, where time seems to lag behind ours. I.e., this is another universe, but everything is exactly the same there as we had in 1960. And in this universe, you can safely kill your grandparents and you won't disappear anywhere. It's just that you're not from this universe, you're not really killing your relatives. But after killing them, your version will never be born in this universe.
Such "time travel" could be depicted, and at least there were much fewer problems with the logic and realism of what was happening.
@alavitka: Actually, there are already projection screens. This is a real, working technology. It's just new, not scaled, and therefore very expensive. Dubai uses it in top installations in New York. Not in smartphones. And, of course, it will take a long time to get to fiction. But certainly it is not "forbidden" by the laws of physics.
@Nathanson: you answered yourself why such "trips" are not usually shown. Because they are not "time travel". And from the point of view of the plot, they are the ones that are interesting. Parallel universes are another, parallel :), layer of fiction. As for science, any claims on this topic sound unreasonable. To begin with, physics itself does not know whether wormholes exist or not. There is not even a close understanding of what it is. The whole theory of burrows and black holes is pure speculation. Moreover, speculation is within the framework of, so to speak, conditional approximations. Indeed, there is still a situation in physics where different proven theories directly contradict each other, and often banal common sense (EPR, Schrodinger). So, scientifically speaking, modern physics quite admits that what happened in the TV series Orville could happen exactly like that.
@alavitka: Google things like "screenless display", "fog display", "holographic display". There are a variety of ways to achieve "screenlessness". By the way, air is not a "void" at all.
@VerveES: Well, I Googled it. I didn't find any working devices. It's a solid theory and description of developments, but no one bothers to cut the loot...

This kind of display usually requires a medium for the deflection of light; light is always deflected before reaching a person’s eye. One example of this display is a hologram. Hologram is the latest form of photography which consists of Lasers, lenses, mirrors, objects and Holographic films. ... Although, research is still going on whether air can be used to deflect the light but these efforts have yielded no result to date.
Ergo - phones without a display will not be seen for a long time! I initially talked about not needing a screen, a projection plane, or a holographic installation, so there are none! And you're messing with my head here. (The display on my hand was the closest I found, but it turned out to be hoax)
@alavitka: Reread my post on October 12, 17:43. I don't know what to add. Everything is clearly written there. I don't know what nonsense and stupidity you came up with for yourself, but I wrote initially that technology is far from phones specifically. The main point is that theoretically the technology is working and created. It just remains to improve, make the device smaller, the screen clearer, etc. If you watch the series, then the characters' screen does not appear out of nowhere, but from the device.
@VerveES: There is no technology for projecting images into the air and they do not know how to achieve this. And an extra Google search, even for your keywords, since we switched to you, only confirms it. Other technologies (hologram, projection onto a plane, film, glasses, etc.) are available, but not in the air and are unsolvable from the point of view of physics. That's all I read about everywhere. If there is an objection specifically to this, please provide proof of the description of the technology, because no matter how many years I repeat this search, I still do not find anything, except to justify that this is impossible according to current knowledge of physics. I repeat, so that there are no discrepancies again - PROJECTING THE IMAGE INTO THE AIR
—The right kind of people never want apologies and the wrong kind take advantage of them. Ну а фраза "He's dead."
