Not everyone goes to college, and those who are smarter will value intelligence more there. Plus, everyone is a little lost there, a new place, new people, huddling together. And the new environment helps to get out of the usual scenario. Quite plausibly, Marianne was able to argue at school, she was sharp-tongued. She wasn't scary, she just didn't try to preen up like other girls at school, make up somehow brightly, etc. So changes are quite possible.
