I will express an unpopular opinion: I don't like Marianne in this story anymore. Yes, Connell showed himself to be a coward at school, afraid to admit to his friends about their relationship (although, as it turned out later, everyone guessed about them). Marianne, on the other hand, looks like a little evil top, even at the beginning of the relationship she suspects him that he is not sincere with her, and asks how often he does this with girls. When he says he's going to miss her, she asks if he's going to miss having sex with her. When he told her that she was beautiful at the party, she offers to introduce him to her friends. She denies and devalues his feelings. She began to ignore him, and ignored the desperate call on the night of graduation, when he finally confessed his love to her.
Perhaps she is behaving this way for a reason: in a short episode in his car, she asks Connell if he has ever beaten women. And she says that her father beat her mother. And it's like she's trying to push Connell away in advance, before that happens.
