Chris looks like some kind of cult leader.
And Azi clearly hadn't encountered such people before - there was no point in convincing them of anything, they just had to get to Demeter in silence, and then solve everything on the spot not with words, but with actions. And certainly not turn your back on a brainwashed teenager.
But here it is impossible to criticize the plot for this, just a very realistic conflict, sad as it may be.
