Each episode is like a separate movie: an hour and a half that flies by unnoticed. No empty scenes, every detail has weight. The creators gave themselves and the audience time to really live this story.
The love line is not here for a quick dopamine surge. This slow birth of feelings, the maturation of emotions is a brilliant slowburn. You and the characters catch every look, every slight smile, every unspoken word. And when love opens up, it covers your head, because you walked this path with them.
But love is only one facet of the story. Friendship, loyalty, the bond of souls — everything goes side by side, without getting lost in the shadow of romance. Rebirth shows that we take with us not only feelings, but also memory, duty, and responsibility.
Ramphung and other secondary lines are alive and independent. Everyone has their own story and voice, and together they raise questions of guilt, justice, and the price of loyalty.

The truth about her son gradually restored her humanity: she found familiar words and soft features. Still an evil spirit, but who took a step towards the light.
I was pleased that my guess about the monk, that he was the reincarnation of her son, turned out to be correct. The death of her son made her like this — the moment of the birth of a vengeful spirit who had to complete an endless cycle of pain.

Nothing really happened in them, but my soul was so warm and calm.… And from this awkward dialogue between Charn and Jet's father, and from the scene with the children of Khem and Paran — all this was the very light that burns green in dark times, when love becomes a crime again.

I give my "12 points", as Eurofans say, to the entire technical team: makeup artists, costumers, cameramen, cast directors, people responsible for lighting, sound and editing. Everything was perfect. The opening flew into the playlist after the first listen, and it seems to belong there.
I'll probably start unexpectedly with the Khimiko—Wat—Yod triangle. I still have the feeling that the showrunners were inspired by Carmen's story, but they gave it a new, unexpected sound.
Khimiko, like Carmen, is the epitome of life and freedom. Wat is almost an Escamillo: the same free spirit, but clad in the armor of duty. And if Escamillo is playing with death for glory, then Wat is to save others. He's a soldier fighting the enemy, yes, but he's also a doctor—a military doctor-a man who snatches lives from the clutches of death.
And Iodine is a typical Jose. Like Merime, he is unable to let go. He wants to possess, to appropriate, to hold freedom in his fist. And he ends up ruining her. If Merime and Bizet Jose are experiencing a social decline (policeman → smuggler → murderer), then Yod is going through a much scarier path: murderer → suicide → evil spirit. This is not just a tragedy, it is a spiritual degradation in its purest form.
Moving on from the days of the past to the present, I'll start, perhaps, with the main crash — Paran, to which I have mixed feelings. He's incredibly handsome. So much so that I just want to put him somewhere in the corner of the room, let him meditate, and I will silently admire. But his beauty is cold, unearthly, otherworldly — like a marble statue. She is admired, envied, perhaps even worshipped—but not loved.
Watching the Couple was aesthetically pleasing, almost ecstatic: every time he appeared on the screen, it was like a visit from a perfect but unattainable ideal. And yet I didn't manage to feel any real human feelings for him. I didn't want to hug or kiss him. There is no breath of life in it. Rather, all his life he had been running from her, building a wall between himself and the world. That's his tragedy. And he could only truly reveal himself next to Khem - having inherited the features of Vat, Paran became the one who wins back the space for life from death. A space for Khem.
But Khem is a revelation. At first, he seemed "nothing" — gray, ordinary, as if a random background. But the further I watched, the more I felt the power in him—quiet, deep, inexhaustible. I have already written that I see in him a reinterpreted archetype of Carmen. But if Carmen is the Dionysian embodiment of passion and freedom, then Khem is the very life force.
He enters into the destinies of others, like the flooding of the Nile into Egypt. He is a Great Hapi: he animates everything he touches. Paran, Jet, Charn, Yod, even Ramphung — they all start breathing in a new way when Khem enters their world. He is the great moisture, the divine river that nourishes all living things. And because Ramphung's fight with him is not just a clash of characters. It's a battle with life itself.
If we talk about Ramphung, then she is the quintessence of pain. Not a stereotypical antagonist "evil because it's necessary for the plot," but a complex, voluminous character with a clear, albeit scary motivation. An eye for an eye. A life for a life.
And here I have to say a couple of things for which I may be condemned — about the background of Ramphung. Honestly? I was completely dissatisfied with the WAY it was told. Perhaps it's because after "Raise the Red Lantern," I can no longer perceive the theme of "a woman in a traditional patriarchal family" other than through that abyss of inner pain and tragedy. Against the background of this film, any other perspective seems simplistic, sketchy, and not lived through enough.
I wanted more — depth, inner awe, a real catastrophe of the soul. But it turned out... well, a parody of a Magnificent Century. I've watched this episode twice, and I still have the feeling that by focusing solely on Ramphung's personal tragedy and not showing criticism of the system in which such a thing became possible, the director made a serious mistake.
But I was absolutely delighted with his other find.
The series ends with an almost hour-long epilogue telling about the characters' lives after Ramphung stopped torturing Khem. And it was an amazing forty minutes. Nothing really happened in them, but my soul was so warm and calm.… And from this awkward dialogue between Charn and Jet's father, and from the scene with the children of Khem and Paran — all this was the very light that burns green in dark times, when love becomes a crime again.
