@chch93: Sometimes Lorelai's parents are just unbearable. How can you be so dependent on the opinion of this notorious society? Why are they so influenced by him, so she is sometimes forced to live by the same rules, although that's why she ran away from them? And of course I respect Richard very much for his impulse to make his wife happy at all costs, insanely touching, but why this should happen at the cost of his daughter's feelings and desires is incomprehensible to me. @chch93: the wife's feelings are more important, because it was with her that Richard lived most of his life, and what his daughter "needed" to do was not worth the "misfortune" of his wife. I really liked that about him, yes, it's wrong to make my daughter dance to someone's tune, but he tried to explain to her how important it was for Emily, she didn't understand and he had no choice. You can think for a long time and wonder why someone else's opinion is so important to them, but at the moment understanding the reason hardly helped, because people do not change in a second, especially if they are already such adults. They needed to solve the problem here and now. I would not like to be in Lorelei's place, but I understand the feelings of both sides. There are no rights and wrongs here, everyone just behaves quite within the framework of their characters and taking into account their lived experience. Children are children, they won't always be with you, but your wife will be, so Richard protected her more in this situation than his daughter.

She really doesn't have to do what she doesn't want to do and tried to defend it. And it would be a sin to blame her for that. What she eventually told her mother is cool, but it's not the "norm", it shouldn't always be like this, that is, it should be perceived as a voluntary sacrifice of Lorelei for the benefit of her mother, she decided that she could do so in a specific case, but it shouldn't be necessary. I like that she made this decision herself, even with her father's message, but if she had made the opposite decision, I would not have condemned her.
