I understand that Columbo asked the guy to help him make up a picture of what was really in the arena that night. A lot was tied to the identity of the killer himself - that he was vain, which means he was jealous of his image, well, and apparently the screenwriter decided that this explanation would be enough. Therefore, when the murdered man rushed to save his son, our villain actually stood still and shook like an aspen leaf.
But it's stupid to kill because someone saw you not as cool and cool as you usually were - a little crazy, to be honest. A strange motive.

But the jokes on the topic "well, I thought that if I didn't help, then you wouldn't let me out of the country / - keep thinking like that, hehe" were very good.
