@FRFD: I wrote in previous seasons that I see in Toby a man who cannot find his place in the team. That he doesn't obey Michael. In general, the character reveals very little. For example, it is only in S07 that it turns out that he has the accreditation of a psychotherapist. A little earlier, Toby revealed his love for trains, and in matters of establishing justice, he is ready to cross the line (when Darryl was suspected of faking an injury with crutches). But he also became desperate and decided on outrageous things, for example, he put his hand on Pam's leg right in front of Jim, and then climbed the fence.
@Redopera: It seems to me it's a little difficult to find your place in the team when you (in the sense of his character) are constantly bullied by the boss, and the rest are also not very rosy. That 's what the scriptwriters didn 't really reveal , another question .
Over time, it began to seem to me that, in general, he was introduced to the series in order to pick up an audience of compassionate people (like me) who were constantly rooting for Toby because of how they treat him :) Well, that's right, purely thoughts came to mind later after the fact after watching the series))
Toby triggers Michael, that's all. He is a kind of image of a teacher who looks down on him and forbids him to play. Michael is in child mode most of the time, and most likely he had someone as a child who behaved like Toby. It would fit perfectly into Michael's picture as a character. Well, Toby, as a psychologist, has never done anything about it. More precisely, he did things that would definitely not work with Michael. When a person is in child mode, it is useless to talk to him as an adult. For the life of me, he won't get it. Toby consistently showed unprofessionalism in this regard, because it's his job to be able to reach everyone. So it's not just Michael's fault.
@Bullseye0901: Yes, it's purely historical already. Fact 1: Michael couldn't influence Toby because as HR he wasn't Michael's subordinate in DM. Fact 2: Toby sometimes still filed reports on Michael in the head, far from the best content. Fact 3: Michael never denied himself the opportunity to mock Toby's divorce. Even after 6 seasons, Michael does not operate with new facts, but continues to fend off arguments about divorce. This is already somewhat out of place, well, because Fact 1. Fact 4: In key issues related to Michael's corporate life, Toby always had the right to vote. Remember at least a court hearing with an attempt to rehabilitate Jen, or negotiations with Wallace. Toby was always asked for an expert opinion. Fact 5: Toby, while performing his duties, often objects to Michael, questioning his behavior and management methods. Unless, of course, we forget that this is a comedy series centered on Michael, then Toby is Michael's antipode, at least in judgment. Toby's first appearance was at the beginning of S01, at a seminar about harassment, and this, I'm sorry, seems to be 2005. So, historically, hatred of Toby has been growing, and Michael is not going to figure out the root of the problem, because he sees it in Toby himself, and not in his giant narcissism.
I specifically went to the comments on this series to make sure that I'm not the only one who thinks this attitude of Michael to Toby is wrong. But I can definitely say that this is one of my favorite episodes of the Office, because Michael finally stopped acting so stupid with Toby. I was so glad when Toby did it!) He deserves better)
@erutaretil: >For a man like Michael, this can be a good reason to hate You tell this to the situation in S07, where Michael continues to operate on Toby's divorce, and not something else.
