I didn't understand the ending...
@die-please: grandpa noticed that they do not cast shadows, which means they have already died. If you mean a shot with a machine gun in the last seconds, then perhaps it means that the gum that the old man is wearing is no longer for sale, which means they have been wandering around for a long time. Although I'm not sure, since they lost the shadows only after the scene in the destroyed house.
@Langolier: and how do they fit into the world of the series in general? 0_o
@Solokirrik: as another novel describing the urban legend of Shawnen Batto.
@Langolier: and it seemed to me that the machine is more of a reference to the name. Like, this is their kind of happy "family".
@Langolier: I carefully reviewed first, after I realized about the shadows. In general, yes, they got drunk in the house. After that, there were no shadows, and the dude who got out from under the train was probably already a ghost, too.
