The series "Cruel Summer" and "grown-ish" were shut down due to low ratings

Cable channel Freeform has shut down the series "Cruel Summer" and "grown-ish". The "Cruel Summer" anthology ran for two seasons, while "grown-ish" will close after the second installment of season five, which will premiere in January 2024. Although production on the series finale has already wrapped, it is reported that the writers will have the opportunity to shoot additional scenes for the final episode and bring the storyline to a logical conclusion.
The Hollywood Reporter attributes the closure to the projects' low ratings: according to the publication, Freeform executives wanted to order new seasons of both series, but their ratings did not justify the production costs — especially now that Disney, Freeform's parent company, is looking to cut costs by another $2 billion.
After the end of "grown-ish", whose final episodes will air in 2024, and the end of "grown-ish", there will be no original series left on Freeform — the channel will only produce reality shows.
The first season of "Cruel Summer" was about a beautiful and successful high school student, Kate, who goes missing. After that, awkward outsider Janette, who seemed to have nothing to do with the incident, becomes first the most popular girl in town, and after a couple years — the most despised person in America. The second season of the anthology was about a friendship that turned into a love triangle.
The "grown-ish" show's plot centered on Callie and Mariane Foster, who leave their parents' home, move to Los Angeles, and begin their adult lives. Mariana becomes a computer programmer and Callie takes a job as a paralegal. Los Angeles is a tough city where you have to work hard to succeed, and the girls are ready to take on that challenge.
