The movie follows classmates Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme. The girls quickly become close, and this scares Pauline's mother, who wants them to stop communicating. Fearing separation, they decide to kill Pauline's mom.

Jackson considered almost 200 actresses for the role of Juliet, but debutante Winslet beat them all out. It's hard to believe that this was her first job in the movie: the actress, as noted by The Washington Post, shone in every scene.

She offered her then-husband Sam Mendes to direct the movie, and then sent the script to longtime friend Leonardo DiCaprio, convincing him to play Frank. The result exceeded expectations: the picture was loved by critics, and Winslet's honest play gave her a Golden Globe.
