The basis of the picture was a short film directed by Michael Dougherty "Season's Greetings" (1996), where the character of Sam first appeared. By the way, his name is formed from the name of the Celtic holiday Samhain, which was the forerunner of Halloween.

Almost immediately upon release, the movie gained cult status, becoming something like "Home Alone" for Halloween celebrations for New Year's Eve. Nearly 30 years later, in 2022, a sequel to the movie was released called "Hocus Pocus 2".
