The movie is based on the life of real mobster Henry Hill (his role masterfully performed by Ray Liotta). His story was told by Nicholas Pileggi in his book "Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family", and then director Martin Scorsese stumbled upon it and realized it would be the perfect movie.
