Max has shut down the pirate comedy "Our Flag Means Death" with Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi

The show ran for two seasons.

Streaming service Max has shut down the series "Our Flag Means Death" starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi. The pirate comedy ran for two seasons: the first was released in March 2022, and the second premiered in October 2023.

According to the plot of the series, inspired by the real story of pirate Stede Bonnet, a rich nobleman Stede, experiencing a midlife crisis, decides to leave his usual life behind and become a pirate. Trading his family for a crew of dirty pirates, he embarks on the greatest adventure of his life.

The showrunner of the series was David Jenkins ("People of Earth"). In an interview timed to coincide with the second season finale, Jenkins talked about plans for a possible third season of the show, which, according to his plan, was supposed to be the last. At the time, he also said he was not opposed to expanding the show's universe, but emphasized that Stede and Ed's story is a three-season story.

Their target audience is different. But there are much fewer such series and everyone has a choice ;)

fans on the day of cancellation made them 1 in the Max top. others began to unsubscribe en masse, and I do not know if this is related or not, but in 2 days the company's shares fell by 6% (as they say, 3 is already a lot). Many media outlets, including neutral ones like the English Independent, wrote that this is a very strange decision, no one closes a show with a rating of 94 (!) on Rotten tomatoes so easily. I've just read on Twitter that season 3 was basically being prepared to be filmed in the summer. Everyone was confident about the extension.
Now the audience is attacking Max, they write on social media.Thousands of people are signing a petition for an extension... Taika hasn't written anything yet, and he's a producer. Maybe there is hope 😅🤡💔
