The first season tells the story of hitman Lorne Malvo. After a car accident, he ends up in a Minnesota hospital where he meets mild-mannered insurance agent Lester Nygaard, setting off a series of murders across the city. Cops Molly Solverson and Gus Grimley will be the ones to solve the string of seemingly unrelated crimes.

Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy's series based on Michael Creighton's 1973 science fiction film of the same name. The HBO project took the basic idea of the film and expanded on it, exploring themes of oppression, consciousness and what it means to be human.

"12 Monkeys"

The series was based on Terry Gilliam's science fiction thriller of the same name, starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. Unlike most of the films in our selection, "12 Monkeys" was positively received by critics and even received two Oscar nominations.
