The Avatar star has revealed that Sokka won't be sexist in the new Netflix series "Avatar: The Last Airbender"

The decision has already been criticized online.
Netflix

Kiawentiio Tarbell, who plays Katara in Netflix's "Avatar: The Last Airbender", revealed an important difference between the upcoming project and the original animated series: the new show will not feature Sokka as a sexist.

"I feel like we also took out the element of how sexist [Sokka] was. I feel like there were a lot of moments in the original show that were iffy", — the actress shared in an interview.

Ian Ousley, who plays the role of Sokka, also said that the changes in the project were due to realism and the inability to transfer some elements of the animated show into the game form of the new series.

In the original Nickelodeon project, the character of Sokka from the Southern Water Tribe was indeed sexist. For example, he said that "girls mend pants better than guys, and guys are better at hunting and fighting". However, over the course of the show, Sokka realizes he was wrong and changes his views.

The creators' decision to change the character has already been criticized online. Users noted that the sexism of Sokka was perceived by the authors of the animated series not as a joke, but as an element of growth and development of his character. In the end, Sokka revised his views and realized his ignorance, and his journey became an important and instructive part of the project.

To see how the authors managed to tell Sokka's story in a new way, it will be possible already on February 22: on this day all eight episodes of the first season of the project will be released.

@al_topchiy: according to the authors of the series, it turns out that everyone should be born perfect and righteous people initially. You don't need to learn from mistakes and change in life :)

As usual, the authors do not at all explain what and why was done in the original, the main thing for them is to show that the characters are perfect and without flaws, otherwise someone may be offended by something.

@GonReborn: On the other hand, what's the point of making a cartoon series if you don't change anything at all. The artistic view of the director and that's it)
It remains to be hoped that the rethink will be successful

They did this because now the world is being infringed on with every fart and it's easier to smooth out the corners so that there are no scandals and haight towards the actor. The absence of this in the character of the serial Sokka can be experienced.

@hwa_chouette: Yes, of course. However it lost quite a lot of funny moments that swirled around it. For example, his training with the girl squad, led by Suki.

For eight episodes, the character will not have time to develop, and after that, the series is not yet the fact that it will be extended

@Sinhito: And how many episodes do you need to develop the characters? Ten? Twenty? In my opinion, eight episodes is not what you can do - you need to have time to develop, and not one, but preferably several characters, unless the task is the opposite.

@Sinhito: Do people develop up to thirty, and then fall into stasis? You get smarter, you get dumber, you learn something new, you teach others, you develop and degrade, and that's okay. It's not worth the task for a character to comprehend all the secrets of the universe in eight episodes, become a superman and that's it, he has nothing else to do. There are always areas in which you don't know anything, or things about which you seem to have formed an opinion for a long time, and then - bang - something happens, and it changes. I don't see a problem with that. Well, only if the screenwriters are completely beginners and have no idea what to do with the characters, then yes, then there are problems.

I agree, although if they have a calculation like Santa Barbara, then you can, of course, not even worry about the first 150 episodes and not develop anything. But very specific people will also enjoy it.

So the character growth was canceled, lol. It could also be an instructive moment, the Kyoshi warriors were already in series 4 and the series itself was more about character development than promoting the plot.

In the same article, they also said that, in general, Sokka's plot was cut down, and Azula was added on the contrary.

Well, character development and all that is over fine, but we all understand that the series will simply be canceled and canceled if there is explicit sexism and all that. Many people stop differentiating between the series and life when watching it, I wouldn't be surprised if they poured shit on the actor later. Netflix is not ready for such a haight (although it's time to get used to it, because adding non-canon characters to their series and drowning for tolerashek also causes a solid negative for many) For some reason, they have the idea that everyone is born perfect at once, or they don't want to face the truth.

I don't really care, to be honest, about this, or about LGBT/black characters.
I don't like it when they focus on this and use it to promote the project
. Look, our main character is gay
. Look, our main character is Mexican
. Look, we won't have sexism in the project."
Just do it efficiently and promote it through actors, plot, graphics

Hmm, very, very sorry. I sincerely love the original series. There is even some fear of watching a new project, I don't want to spoil the perception if something doesn't work out for them. Maybe I'll wait for feedback from people first and then decide whether I'll watch or skip.

a very strange decision considering that Sokka is growing as a persona, in many ways changing just such an opinion towards girls. Well, probably, as always, it is unclear to all fighters for what, who will not watch the cartoon or the series itself, will not give rest even the slightest sigh towards sexism. appetites are growing geometrically, today even the word sexism is not allowed, tomorrow something else is censorship in its purest form

Now it's clear why Konietzko and DiMartino left, after all these dubious Netflix decisions with Sokka and Katara and definitely something else.

I did not understand what kind of excuse "it is impossible to transfer normally from the cartoon to live", from the cartoon it is impossible only to transfer drawn hyperemotions-movements, and the rest is very possible, what nonsense
Of course, those very geniuses could have started drinking, as it was with some actors who played vile Persians, but here it's just an idiot, not a vile one, on the contrary, it would show that people can get smarter, on the other hand, the main thing is not to remove the comments and jokes of Sokka along with really excellent solutions in which its essence, then you can It will be possible to survive this too
