The role of Charlie Chaplin in Richard Attenborough's biographical film was Robert Downey Jr.'s breakthrough role. And despite the fact that critics have dubbed the picture "a fairly standard biopic", they agreed on one thing: Downey Jr. played great. He managed not only to master the gait and manners of Chaplin, but also surprisingly heartfelt to convey his heartache and changes over the decades. No wonder Downey Jr. received his first Oscar nomination for this role.

"Short Cuts"

Based on a short story by Raymond Carver, this movie interweaves the stories of several characters to form a group portrait of early '90s America. In the story, waitress Doreen accidentally hits a young boy with her car. Shortly thereafter, he falls into a coma. While in the hospital, the boy's grandfather tells his son Howard about his past adventures. Meanwhile, baker Andy goes in search of this family when they pick up a cake ordered for the boy's birthday.

It's easy to get lost in such an extensive cast of the movie (there are more than 20 characters in "Short Cuts"!), but Robert Downey Jr. still managed to make an impression. Critics appreciated the work of the actors, and in 1993 the cast of the project won the overall Golden Globe.

"Kiss Kiss Kiss Bang Bang"

Fleeing from the police after a botched robbery, petty thief Harry Lockhart accidentally auditions for the role of a detective in a movie. He auditions and then goes to a party where he meets private detective Perry, who is hired to tell Harry about the job. Unexpectedly, Lockhart, his high school girlfriend, and the detective become embroiled in a real murder investigation.

In 1999, Robert Downey Jr. was sentenced to three years in prison. The actor was eventually released after 15 months in prison, but he faced another problem: how to restart his career. The role of Harry Lockhart in the movie Shane Black "Kiss Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" was one of the first for Downey Jr. after rehabilitation. It came out successfully: the movie received positive reviews, and especially critics singled out the actor's game.

"Zodiac"

In "Zodiac", the film's director David Fincher gave Downey Jr. a chance to show his dramatic abilities. The actor masterfully managed to convey Avery's terror and obsession, as well as his gradual descent into alcoholism after encountering the killer's threats.

"Tropic Thunder"

In the parody action movie "Tropic Thunder", Robert Downey Jr. played Kirk Lazarus, a five-time Oscar winner who dives headfirst into any role. Downey Jr. himself received an Oscar nomination for his work, as well as Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations.
