Not just Iron Man: 7 great movies with Robert Downey Jr.
"Chaplin"
Drama | 4.04 out of 5 on MyShows | 1992
The film follows the life of comedian and actor Charlie Chaplin, who was forced to leave the United States and triumphantly returned to win an honorary Oscar, from his humble childhood in London to his groundbreaking success in silent films.
The role of Charlie Chaplin in Richard Attenborough's biographical film was Robert Downey Jr.'s breakthrough role. And despite the fact that critics have dubbed the picture "a fairly standard biopic", they agreed on one thing: Downey Jr. played great. He managed not only to master the gait and manners of Chaplin, but also surprisingly heartfelt to convey his heartache and changes over the decades. No wonder Downey Jr. received his first Oscar nomination for this role.

"Short Cuts"
Drama, comedy | 4.17 out of 5 on MyShows | 1993
Based on a short story by Raymond Carver, this movie interweaves the stories of several characters to form a group portrait of early '90s America. In the story, waitress Doreen accidentally hits a young boy with her car. Shortly thereafter, he falls into a coma. While in the hospital, the boy's grandfather tells his son Howard about his past adventures. Meanwhile, baker Andy goes in search of this family when they pick up a cake ordered for the boy's birthday.
It's easy to get lost in such an extensive cast of the movie (there are more than 20 characters in "Short Cuts"!), but Robert Downey Jr. still managed to make an impression. Critics appreciated the work of the actors, and in 1993 the cast of the project won the overall Golden Globe.

"Kiss Kiss Kiss Bang Bang"
Comedy, crime, detective | 3.7 out of 5 on MyShows | 2005
Fleeing from the police after a botched robbery, petty thief Harry Lockhart accidentally auditions for the role of a detective in a movie. He auditions and then goes to a party where he meets private detective Perry, who is hired to tell Harry about the job. Unexpectedly, Lockhart, his high school girlfriend, and the detective become embroiled in a real murder investigation.
In 1999, Robert Downey Jr. was sentenced to three years in prison. The actor was eventually released after 15 months in prison, but he faced another problem: how to restart his career. The role of Harry Lockhart in the movie Shane Black "Kiss Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" was one of the first for Downey Jr. after rehabilitation. It came out successfully: the movie received positive reviews, and especially critics singled out the actor's game.
"Great comedy (very, by the way, spoiled by dubbing). In ten years Black will try to shoot it again, but I like this version better. There's more romance here. Well, and yes, it seems to be the movie that brought Downey back to the big screen and here he invested from the heart", — Ytzin.

"Zodiac"
Crime, detective, drama, thriller | 4.17 out of 5 on MyShows | 2007
In the late 1960s and into the 1970s, horror gripped San Francisco: a serial killer nicknamed the Zodiac had appeared in the city. Cartoonist Robert Graysmith, reporter Paul Avery and investigator Dave Toschi become obsessed with finding the Zodiac, forgetting about work, family and friends. Meanwhile, the Zodiac kills victim after victim and taunts authorities with cryptic messages and ciphers.
In "Zodiac", the film's director David Fincher gave Downey Jr. a chance to show his dramatic abilities. The actor masterfully managed to convey Avery's terror and obsession, as well as his gradual descent into alcoholism after encountering the killer's threats.

In the parody action movie "Tropic Thunder", Robert Downey Jr. played Kirk Lazarus, a five-time Oscar winner who dives headfirst into any role. Downey Jr. himself received an Oscar nomination for his work, as well as Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations.
"It's worth seeing for everyone. Even if you don't like the movie itself and the jokes in it, you'll see lots of actors in very even unusual roles. It's just worth it. Well, and in general, it is also a very good comedy, enjoy watching", — izkrys.

"Oppenheimer"
Drama, historical | 4.47 out of 5 on MyShows | 2023
The film is about physicist Dr. Robert Oppenheimer, who led the development of nuclear weapons during World War II. The movie follows his life from his university days to the post-war years, when Oppenheimer was practically an outcast.
"Oppenheimer" Christopher Nolan brought Robert Downey Jr. long-awaited Oscar, and quite deservedly: the actor, known for his charisma, perfectly played thin-skinned weasel, completely devoid of such charm.
"Three hours of excellent dialog, a minimum of action, and maximum drive narrative in three different time segments from the case of Oppenheimer, a physicist who changed the world, he brought the world to new challenges. And Nolan does everything in his own style, a lot of characters, and everyone has something to say and everything seems to be revealed from the get-go", — Paul_Wolf.
