Most of the actors play great, the plot and scenery are not trivial, even the freakishness does not bother me at all, a kind of phantasmagorical "Dickens on crack" style, the subtext and symbolism are interesting, but if you thoughtfully delve into it, it is not always on the surface.
One of the disadvantages, in my opinion, is the lengthening, the dynamics are very slack at times, and most importantly, for those who have not read the book, it is difficult to understand many points, especially the motives of the characters, including GG or, for example, the reasons for the chef's enmity with the valet.
As a result, it's hard to watch, but it's interesting, you need to wade through the film, strain the inter-auricular ganglion, and it's better to read a book and/or Google before that to make up for the meanings missed / poorly shown in the film.
