An extremely successful main character is the basis of this series. The character turned out to be charismatic, lively, ambiguous and multifaceted. Inspector Morse is well educated, intelligent, and has extensive detective experience. Therefore, I am confident and full of my own dignity. At the same time, he is a bit of a snob, often caustic, sarcastic and even harmful, sometimes a bully and a poseur, independent and difficult to manage - it is clear why, with his experience, he is still in a not particularly high position. It's unclear how he managed to stay in the police force for so long.
Nevertheless, Morse evokes the sympathy and empathy of the viewer. This is greatly facilitated by the fact that in the end the inspector discovers the truth and exposes the culprit. Indecision, and generally bad luck with women, also add empathy.
The plots are good, the crimes are intricate, and there is plenty of intrigue, especially since Morse often makes mistakes with the original versions. The action develops slowly, slightly melancholic, no fights, rapid chases or shootouts. But there is still time to unobtrusively touch on some moral issues, convey the mood with classical music or please the eye with pleasant views. Shot appropriately, the editing is quite smooth, the picture is good. The overall impression is of a very high-quality series, although it is already noticeable that it was filmed, after all, in the last century ...
Language. They speak quite well and clearly. There is practically no heavy accent, and the vocabulary is much simpler than one would expect from an academic Oxford. It's quite easy with subtitles.

Setups, doppelgangers (who, very fortunately, are also Japanese), soap operas, and Morse, who is trying to establish a personal life... You sympathize with Morse, but in general the series is gray and boring.
